Jean Silva before UFC 314: Bryce Mitchell might need to retire after I give him 'brain damage'

MIAMI – Jean Silva believes he could send his UFC 314 opponent into an early retirement. UFC 314 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) takes place Saturday at Kaseya Center, where Silva (15-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) will have the opportunity to settle his differences with Bryce Mitchell. The featherweight main card bout has seen a heated build, and Silva believes if he performs to his expectations, Mitchell (17-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) could call it a career after Saturday's event. 'He's an excellent fighter,' Silva told reporters through an interpreter at a pre-fight news conference. 'Listen, he's fought Ilia Topuria, he beat Edson Barboza, Dan Ige – everything was going good until he got knocked out by Josh Emmett. I think that really messed up his brain and his emotions, and everything just kind of went wrong. You can tell he's not looking at this the same way that he used to look at it before. It just really messed him up. 'The fight's going to go: he's going to try to take me down, I'm going to defend it and I'm going to throw some shots at his head. Might knock him out in the first, in the second. We'll see, but maybe he'll need to retire after this because he's going to have some brain damage after this one.' If he does record a knockout, it would be business as usual for Silva in the UFC. Through four fights with the promotion, he's finished every opponent, and only reached the third round once. Mitchell has only been knocked out once in his career, which happened to be a moment in consideration for Knockout of the Year in 2023. Silva may be in Mitchell's head considering the antics that took place at the pre-fight press conference last month where Silva trolled the flat earth believer by bringing a globe on stage. Silva also took exception to Mitchell's pro-Adolf Hitler comments he made on the first episode of his new podcast. While the two have gone back and forth on social media in the days leading up to UFC 314, Silva wants to be clear that he never has disrespected Mitchell's abilities as a fighter. 'I never disrespected him as a fighter, his skills or his abilities,' Silva said. 'He's fought really tough guys in the UFC. … He can believe what he wants to believe, but it upsets me that he doesn't see the position he's in as a public person and doesn't mind his words, disrespects people and children and everything else. He talks a lot about God but wears t-shirt with God with guns around it. That makes no sense to me. It's a lot of contradictions.' Ultimately, Silva doesn't believe Mitchell is taking the pre-fight interactions to heart – at least he hopes not. 'I really hope that he's trying to sell the fight and promote the fight because some of the opinions and beliefs that he's got about the guy with the mustache is just incredible,' Silva said. 'It's – I don't even know what to say, but I don't think he's taking it personally that hard because for him to take it personally, I think I would have to speak about God, and I'm not going to speak badly about God.' Jon Anik isn't too sure about Bryce Mitchell vs. Jean Silva odds heading into UFC 314

Jon Anik doesn't think the betting odds accurately reflect the Bryce Mitchell vs. Jean Silva matchup. Mitchell (17-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) is a moderate underdog against rising featherweight contender Silva (15-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) on Saturday's UFC 314 main card at Kaseya Center in Miami. Mitchell turned plenty of fans against him after making controversial pro-Adolf Hitler comments, which Silva fully capitalized on during the UFC 314 pre-fight press conference last month. But Anik said people seem to forget Mitchell's strength of schedule in the UFC, which includes wins over Edson Barboza and Dan Ige. 'Whether he's lifting weights in blue jeans and boots or not even wearing any clothes, he's putting in the work,' Anik told MMA Junkie of Mitchell. 'He's one of the hardest workers in the game. You've always seen him go to great lengths to travel and train with high level training partners. I just think Bryce Mitchell's commitment in totality to martial arts is what gets lost in all of this. I don't have to tell you about his ground fighting exploits. Outstanding submission guy, a really great ground striker. He has heart, he has toughness, fight IQ, durability. 'He's got a little of different things. The betting line would suggest to you, with Jean Silva at -325, that he's going to need every bit of them to come through as a +260 underdog, but I do believe based upon the narrative and some of what he has said, we are losing sight of just the mixed martial arts matchup. You can count me among the surprised, despite The Fighting Nerds success and Jean Silva's ability to in all phases and his death-touch power, -325 against a guy as tried and tested in the UFC as Mitchell? I just don't see.' Silva has kicked off his octagon tenure with four stoppage victories, most recently a first-round Performance of the Night TKO over Melsik Baghdasaryan at UFC Fight Night 252 in February. He called out Mitchell after the win and got his wish. For more on the card, visit MMA Junkie's event hub for UFC 314.

Bryce Mitchell 'unfazed by the pressure' heading into UFC 314 matchup vs. Jean Silva

It's been a whirlwind past month for Bryce Mitchell heading into UFC 314. Mitchell (17-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) meets rising featherweight contender Jean Silva (15-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) on April 12 at Kaseya Center in Miami. A once fan favorite, Mitchell came under serious fire for his pro-Adolf Hitler comments, which he later attempted to walk back. Silva jumped on the opportunity to pile on Mitchell during a UFC 314 press conference March 7 in Las Vegas and turned the crowd against him by igniting a 'F*ck Bryce Mitchell' chant. One would think Mitchell faces more pressure than anyone on the card, but 'Thug Nasty' insists he remains unaffected. 'I'm unfazed by the pressure,' Mitchell said in an interview with MMA Guru. 'I simply want to destroy this heathen that lies in front of me, and that's all that I care about. What people have to say, I could care less. I'm here to crush a heathen who blasphemes my holy God.' Ever since the press conference, Mitchell revealed that he experienced trouble sleeping after he had demonic dreams. Silva goes by the nickname 'Lord,' and Mitchell suggests that his opponent continuously barking is proof he is under some spiritual influence. 'I do know that he's possessed. I don't think he is; I know he is,' Mitchell said. 'I know this is a battle of good vs. evil, and don't you dare think I'm calling myself good, and I'm calling Jean evil. I'm talking about who he serves is evil. Anything other than Jesus Christ is evil. I serve good.' For more on the card, visit MMA Junkie's event hub for UFC 314.

Dana White: UFC 'beyond disgusted' by Bryce Mitchell's pro-Hitler rant

How do Dana White and the UFC feel about Bryce Mitchell going on a pro-Adolf Hitler diatribe on his podcast? "We're beyond disgusted," White said Thursday at the Power Slap 11 post-match news conference. Earlier in the day, Mitchell released the first episode of his "ArkanSanity Podcast" where, in response to Elon Musk's recent Nazi-like salute at a Donald Trump rally, he lauded Hitler as "a good guy" while spouting off homophobic rhetoric and denying the Holocaust occurred. While White usually shrugs off when his fighters share their bigoted views publicly, he opened Thursday's news conference by addressing the Mitchell controversy head on. "I've heard a lot of dumb, ignorant sh*t in my day, but this one's probably the worst," White said. "When you talk about Hitler, who's responsible for the death of 6 million Jews, and he tried to completely eliminate a race of people. World War 2 was the deadliest war in history: 15 million military deaths, 45 million civilians and 25 soldiers were killed in World War 2. Second of all, Hitler is one of the most disgusting and evil human beings to ever walk the face of the earth, and anyone who even tries to take an opposing position is a moron. That's the problem with the internet and social media. You provide a platform for a lot of dumb, ignorant people." While he didn't specify who, White said the UFC reached out to Mitchell directly to let him know its position on his remarks. White said Mitchell didn't apologize for his message but did say he was sorry for putting the UFC in a compromising position with his words. "Out of all the dumb, ignorant sh*t I've heard in my life, this has to be the dumbest and most ignorant," White said. So where does that leave Mitchell and his standing with the UFC? Apparently no different than it was before his pro-Hitler remarks as White made no indication that the promotion plans to discipline Mitchell. "That's what everyone wants to hear, about punishment, but it's free speech," White said. "I don't have to love it, you don't have to love it, you know." The UFC also doesn't have to stand for it, but as has been the case in recent years with fighter transgressions, no action will be taken by the UFC and Mitchell will continue fighting in the octagon. "Well, that's the beautiful thing about this business: For all of you that hate Bryce Mitchell, you get to hopefully see him get his ass whooped on global television," White said. "What do you want me to say about it? You know where I am with free speech. We're disgusted by it. I think he's literally one of the dumbest human beings. Let's not forget this is a guy who took a drill through his nut sack then had to reverse it. That's the level of stupid that we're talking about here. ... "He's stupid. He's dumb. You can't fix dumb people. You know what I mean? When you have somebody that's really, really stupid, and that's who we're talking about here, what do you do? How do you talk sense to a dummy? You don't." Mitchell, 30, is 2-2 in his past four fights after starting his career 15-0. He most recently defeated Kron Gracie by slam TKO this past December at UFC 310. That was Mitchell's first fight in a year after he was the victim of a Knockout of the Year candidate against Josh Emmett at UFC 296 in December 2023.
