Haley Joel Osment Ordered to Attend A.A. After Ski Resort Arrest
A judge has ordered the actor Haley Joel Osment to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and therapy sessions for the next six months as part of a deal to dispose of charges of public intoxication and cocaine possession after he insulted the police. Mr. Osment, who rose to fame as the child actor of 'Sixth Sense' in 1999, was arrested in April at a ski resort in Mono County, Calif. Police footage of the arrest showed Mr. Osment refusing to answer questions from officers. He also asserted that he was being tortured and kidnapped by a 'Nazi' and used an antisemitic slur while addressing an officer. Later he apologized for his words and said he had experienced a blackout. At a court appearance on Monday, a judge granted Mr. Osment's request for a one-year diversion from prosecution, saying he would dismiss the charges if over the next six months the actor obeys all laws, attends three A.A. meetings a week and meets with his therapist twice a week. Diversion is an alternative procedure in criminal cases in many states that allows certain defendants to avoid prosecution and a criminal record by agreeing to complete a rehabilitation program and a period of probation. David Anderson, the Mono County district attorney, said in a statement that his office disagreed with the judge's decision. 'Based on Mr. Osment's prior D.U.I. conviction, as well as his slurs toward the arresting officer, my office did not believe diversion was appropriate,' Mr. Anderson said. A representative for Mr. Osment did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday. He is scheduled to reappear in court in January, when the court will review his compliance with the orders. If he does not complete the diversion program, criminal proceedings will be restarted. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Intoxicated man allegedly attempts to enter St. George home, falls asleep on patio furniture
ST. GEORGE, Utah () — An intoxicated man in St. George was arrested Sunday after he allegedly attempted to enter a home that was not his own and then fell asleep outside on patio furniture. Adrian Diego Hogan, 22, was arrested early Sunday morning after the homeowner called 911, reporting that Hogan rang the doorbell in the middle of the night. According to the police report, he insisted that he lived in the home. In addition to public intoxication, Hogan is also facing charges of assault, aggravated assault, and carrying a dangerous weapon while under the influence. He also blew .203 g/210 mL on a preliminary breath test. The responding officer found Hogan without pants or shoes, only wearing underwear, a t-shirt, and socks. He also noticeably smelled of alcohol, along with 'glossy and bloodshot' eyes, per the police report. Man killed after falling off train traveling through Nevada to Utah Upon being asked, Hogan admitted that he had been drinking. The responding officer also reported that he was slurring his words. Hogan was 'adamant' that the home he attempted to enter was his, despite not being able to tell the officer what street he was on. He also refused to provide his phone number, and said he did not know any other information that he was asked for. 'Due to the fact that Hogan did not know where he lived, or who we could contact to assist him, it was clear that he could not care for himself,' the responding officer wrote. During their contact with Hogan, police noticed he matched the description of a 911 call from a few hours earlier, involving the brandishing of a firearm. Five-time felon sentenced to seven years in prison for possessing firearm and ammunition The call advised that an intoxicated male going by 'Diego' pointed a gun at two individuals, unprovoked. One of the victims convinced 'Diego' to drop the gun, but after asking for it back, the victim told him was too intoxicated to have a gun at the moment. 'Diego' became angry at this and started a small physical altercation before fleeing on foot. Upon arresting him for public intoxication, Hogan admitted he had been drinking at a friend's house throughout the night. He said he did not know where his pants or shoes were, but another officer located clothing just up the street from the arrest location. A pair of jeans with a leather holster attached were found with a wallet inside, containing Hogan's driver's license and several cards with his name on them. The responding officer has requested that he be held with no bail, citing his history of deceptive behavior and possession of firearms as a 'continuous threat to the general public.' Haley Joel Osment comes to unexpected deal in cocaine and public intoxication arrest that included racist rant
Haley Joel Osment appears to have put a troublesome situation behind him, in reaching a deal to escape jail time in his public intoxication and cocaine possession arrest less than two months ago. The Sixth Sense star, 37, will attend three Alcoholics Anonymous meeting weekly as part of a deal he hammered out with a court in Northern California following his April 8 arrest at the Mammoth Mountain resort. The Oscar-nominee was allowed to enter a yearlong diversion program in connection with the case stemming from his arrest at the Mammoth Lakes, California ski destination. The Los Angeles native came to the accord days after authorities with the Mono County District Attorney's office said they had filed misdemeanor charges against the actor in connection with the incident. Officials with the District Attorney's office were not pleased with the actor being allowed to attend a diversion program since he previously got a DUI in 2006 in Los Angeles. Authorities with the office, in their objection, also noted that the actor was caught on camera using racial epithets while he was taken into custody, sources told People. Osment had an arraignment slated to July 7, which will be scuttled now that a deal has been worked out. Osment was an overnight child star sensation as the last millennium drew to a close, with his jarring portrayal of Cole Sear opposite Bruce Willis in M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense. The character, a child with the ability to communicate with the departed, was etched into p op culture lore with the iconic line from the film, 'I see dead people.' The motion picture - which also featured Toni Collette, Olivia Williams, Trevor Morgan and Donnie Wahlberg - was a success at the box office and with critics. It garnered six Oscar nominations in 2000, including Best Director for Shyamalan and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Osment. The child star lost out on the honors to the legendary Michael Caine for The Cider House Rules, Other nominees Magnolia's Tom Cruise, The Talented Mr. Ripley's Jude Law and The Green Mile's Michael Clarke Duncan. Other films Osment has been featured in include the 1994 megahit Forrest Gump as Forrest Junior, 2000s Pay It Forward and the 2001 Steven Spielberg movie A.I. The charismatic actor has also carved out his presence on the small screen with a number of recurring roles on shows such as Teachers, Comedy Bang! Bang and The Kominsky Method.
