I am, most definitely, a pyjama person. I spend an obnoxious amount of time in silk camisole-and-short sets and feather cuff shorts, because their both a) cosy and b) prettier than most of the clothes in my wardrobe.
So I entirely related to fellow nightwear person Jessica (Megan Stalter) when I recently binged Netflix's Too Much. In the new Lena Dunham romcom – a masterpiece, I might add – the American protagonist has a love affair not only with 'musician' Felix (Will Sharp), but also billowy, twee nighties.
While I've not worn a nightie since my teenage years, her cutesy selection got me thinking. Firstly, an airy cotton nightie is exactly what I need to sleep without melting in the endless heatwave that's been this summer. Secondly, if I revert to my teenage nightie-wearing ways, I wouldn't only have a cute and flowy bedtime outfit – I'd also definitely get away with wearing it outside the house in the sunshine.
A good way to ease into this trend is with a loose-fitting nightie, which is basically the same as a summer dress, only you buy it from a different part of the store. The appeal? First, they tend to come in cute pastel colours perfect for warmer months. Second, they're so loose it practically feels like you're wearing nothing at all, which anyone who's commuted on the London tube in July knows is a joy that can't be overstated.
For fellow comfort lovers, here are 9 of the best nighties on the high street that you can get away with wearing as summer dresses. Happy shopping!
