Buses to replace Hutt off-peak trains for next four months

Photo: RNZ / Angus Dreaver Trains will be replaced by buses during most weekday off peak services in the Hutt Valley for the next four months to do rail upgrades. More than $143 million was allocated in Budget 2025 for rail renewals in Auckland and Wellington. In the Hutt Valley that money was set to be put to work from 4 August to 27 November to replace tracks on the line that runs between Upper Hutt and Wellington. Morning and evening peak service would not be affected, but off-peak trains between 9:30am and 2:30pm Hutt Valley and Melling lines were to be replaced by buses most days during the four month period. It would also mean Wairarapa line services would be bus replaced between Upper Hutt and Wellington. The work included replacing large sections of sleepers, rail line and repairing the Ava Bridge. Greater Wellington Regional Council acting chair Adrienne Staples was pleased rail upgrades were being carried out before construction of the Melling interchange begins in December. "With significant disruption expected on State Highway 2 during the construction of the Melling interchange, it will be crucial for passengers to have reliable rail services into Wellington city." Metlink senior manager of operations, Paul Tawharu, said the timing of the upcoming works was designed to reduce disruption for most passengers. Auckland rail system to shut down over long weekend

No trains will run in Auckland from this Friday until Monday. Photo: Auckland Transport Auckland trains will be shut down over the Kings Birthday long weekend, due to the ongoing rail upgrades needed to prepare for the opening of the City Rail Link next year. Auckland Transport said there will be no trains running between Friday 30 May and Monday 2 June. Rail replacement buses will operate across all train lines. AT said critical works will be done under the ongoing Rail Network Rebuild programme, and AT and the City Rail Link project will also work over the long weekend. "This work has been timed by KiwiRail to coincide with a long weekend and reduce the impact as much as possible, but we know it's inconvenient for passengers," said AT spokesperson Stacey van der Putten. 2025 will see a total of nearly 100 days of rail closures to allow KiwiRail to complete all the rail rebuild needed. There have already been weeks of shutdowns in January and April . Further rail closures are also planned for Matariki weekend, and for two weeks during school holidays in July. All trains will be shut over Matariki weekend, between Friday 20 June and Monday 23 June. A partial closure has also been scheduled for the winter school holidays between 28 June and 13 July.
