15-year-old charged in shooting death of other teen
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A 15-year-old is being charged in connection to a shooting in Grand Rapids that left another teenager dead in June. The 15-year-old face a charge of reckless discharge causing death, the Grand Rapids Police Department says. News 8 is not using the suspect's name because he is a minor and because of the nature of the charge against him. The shooting happened the night of June 12 on North Avenue near More Street. My'asia Johnson suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died later at the hospital. Police previously said she did not appear to have been targeted and that they were looking into whether the shooting could have been accidentally or recklessly fired. Teenage girl dies after shooting in Grand Rapids Calling the death 'truly senseless,' GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom in a Thursday statement urged parents to talk to their kids about 'The very real and tragic consequences of illegally-possessed guns.' 'One young life was taken, and another young life will be forever impacted,' the statement read in part. 'We, as a community, need to step up and do everything we can to change the culture that puts these guns in the hands of our children. While it won't take away the pain for Myasia's loved ones, we can work together to spare other families from a similar loss.' GRPD said a safe storage violation was not appropriate based on the circumstances of the case, though it did not explain further. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
