Rangers activate Burger, option Osuna
The Texas Rangers have activated first baseman Jake Burger from the 10 day injured list, per To make room for Burger on the active roster, the Rangers have optioned outfielder Alejandro Osuna to AAA Round Rock. Burger went on the injured list over the All Star Break with a quad strain. He has been on a rehab assignment, and went 4 for 6 last night and was a triple shy of the cycle, so I guess they decided he was ready to come back. I would assume that he will be the regular first baseman, though with Josh Smith excelling, Burger could end up in more of a platoon role with Joc Pederson at DH. Osuna was called up when Evan Carter was placed on the injured list and appeared in the last five games the Rangers played, though two of those were late game appearances. In those five games he was 1 for 9 with a walk and a HBP.

Dodgers' Max Muncy to start Triple-A rehab assignment on Tuesday
The post Dodgers' Max Muncy to start Triple-A rehab assignment on Tuesday appeared first on ClutchPoints. Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy could be back in the lineup by the team's next homestand. The two-time All-Star will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, according to the Orange County Register's Bill Plunkett. Plunkett reports the plan is for Muncy to play third base and take three at bats in his first game, but it is unknown how many rehab games he will need. He added there's a 'slim chance' he could rejoin the Dodgers by the end of the week, with the next homestand much more likely. The Dodgers are currently in Cincinnati amid a nine-game road swing. When they're done with the Reds, they'll visit Tampa Bay to play the Rays before coming home next Monday. Muncy has been on the injured list since July 3 with a bone bruise on his left knee. He sustained the injury in a collision on the basepaths against the Chicago White Sox, and despite missing several weeks of action, he avoided a worst-case scenario. An MRI after-the-fact revealed no structural damage, clearing the way for Muncy to return with plenty of time before the home stretch of the season. 'It was tough news, but it was also great news,' Muncy said at the time, via Sonja Chen of 'In terms of when you look at the play and just the injury that could have happened, we possibly got [the] best-case scenario.' Muncy is in the midst of a strong season for the Dodgers, hitting .250 with an .832 OPS and 13 home runs. He is the latest LA player to get healthy as the team's walking wounded slowly returns to the lineup. The Dodgers activated Blake Trienen on Sunday and Blake Snell appears ready to return to the rotation after making his final rehab start over the weekend. Roki Sasaki and Kiké Hernandez are both in the mix as well to return in the next few weeks. Dodgers' Blake Snell shines in AAA rehab assignment
The post Dodgers' Blake Snell shines in AAA rehab assignment appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Los Angeles Dodgers are getting closer to a key milestone in the recovery of left-handed pitcher Blake Snell, and his latest outing offered plenty of encouraging signs. On Saturday night, Snell pitched 4⅔ scoreless, hitless innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City against the Reno Aces, in what may have been his final rehab start in the minors. Snell struck out seven and issued four walks across 75 pitches — nearly evenly split between 36 balls and 40 strikes. Despite occasional control issues, the southpaw kept the opposing offense off the board, showcasing the dominant pitching that earned him a Cy Young Award. He generated 18 swinging strikes, including 11 on 22 curveballs and sliders. This represented Snell's fourth rehab start since being put on the shelf with left shoulder inflammation in early April. The prior three were with Rancho Cucamonga (Low-A), in the Arizona Complex League during the All-Star break, and one with Oklahoma City. In those four starts, Snell has thrown 13⅔ innings, with a 1.32 ERA, 24 strikeouts, five walks, and a 45.3% strikeout rate. The Dodgers have been careful with the injuries to their rotation, and Snell's response is timely. The trade deadline in MLB is July 31, and the team might be getting help from players returning from the injured list instead of trades. Snell could return to the rotation much sooner than anticipated. That potential return carries extra meaning: he would be in line to face the Tampa Bay Rays, the team he spent five seasons with and won the American League Cy Young Award in 2018. It would mark Snell's first MLB start since April 2. His performance in Reno wasn't without tense moments. In the third inning, he caught Sergio Alcántara leaning off first, but an error kept the runner on base. A grounder to Alex Freeland later turned into an inning-ending double play. Though he allowed baserunners, Snell avoided damage thanks to his ability to miss bats and induce weak contact. With his rehab assignment nearly complete, the Dodgers appear ready to welcome back a key arm just as they prepare to strengthen their rotation for the season's stretch run. Finally good news for Tigers: Kerry Carpenter is back, Trey Sweeney sent to Triple-A
Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch sent a text to Kerry Carpenter, who was on a rehab assignment. 'Call me after your game,' Hinch texted Saturday, July 26. Then, Carpenter hit a homer for Triple-A Toledo at Indianapolis before calling Hinch. 'First thing he told me is that he felt great,' Hinch said Sunday morning. Then Carpenter replied: 'What do you need?' Hinch said: 'We need you in the lineup.' So, the struggling Tigers brought Carpenter back to Detroit and sent shortstop Trey Sweeney to Toledo. Carpenter had a beaming, wide smile as he walked into the clubhouse early Sunday morning while pulling has luggage. 'We got a lot of good hitters on this team, so I'm excited to kind of be right back in the middle of it and see what we can start doing,' Carpenter said. Carpenter was immediately slotted into the batting order for Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. He hasn't played for the Tigers since June 29 because of a hamstring injury. TRENDING: Tigers are historically bad right now. These 4 stats prove it 'Kerry has a huge presence on this team — the look of the lineup, the feel, the strategy, everything is better with Kerry Carpenter in it,' Hinch said. 'He's an immediate presence in the middle of the order against a right-handed pitcher. It sets things up extremely well.' Carpenter's return is great news for a team that has been struggling offensively — they have won just one time in their past 13 games. 'The worst is not being able to do anything to help,' Carpenter said. 'We got a bunch of good fighters on this team, and so whatever we can do to get out of this, I'm sure it's gonna come pretty quickly. I'm just excited to be in the middle of it and be back with these guys." Carpenter played four games for Toledo on a rehab assignment. On Saturday night, he went 1-for-4 with a homer. 'I feel good,' Carpenter said. 'I've been seeing the ball pretty good. ... I saw the ball pretty well and my swing was inconsistent a little bit but last night I felt really good.' The Tigers plan to bring Carpenter back slowly. MITCH ALBOM: Tigers may not have been as good as we thought, but can't be this bad either He is expected to be off on Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but will be in the lineup for the following two games. The Tigers have an off day on Thursday before visiting the Philadelphia Phillies for three games. 'He made a couple adjustments at the plate that made him feel better, both the line drives that he hit yesterday and the homer,' Hinch said. Sweeney's demotion was hardly a surprise for a batter hitting .208. 'He's got to get to work,' Hinch said. 'He's not playing enough to warrant the roster spot right now and how we were using him. He's got a lot of things that he's been working on.' [ MUST LISTEN: Talking trade deadline, Tarik Skubal's future with ex-MLB GM Jim Duquette. Red Sox not ruling out optioning Tanner Houck to Worcester, no decision made yet
CHICAGO — Tanner Houck's maximum 30-day rehab assignment has expired and he's not here with the team in Chicago. The Red Sox will soon need to make a roster decision. Houck's rehab assignment began June 18. The final day was Thursday. Once a player reaches the end of a rehab assignment, his team has two additional days to reinstate him to the roster. So Boston doesn't need to make a decision Friday. 'As of now, we haven't made a decision,' manager Alex Cora said before the Red Sox' game against the Cubs on Friday at Wrigley Field. Houck, an All-Star last year, posted an 8.04 ERA (43 ⅔ innings, 39 earned runs) in nine starts for Boston before landing on the injured list May 14 with a right flexor pronator strain. The 29-year-old has minor league options remaining. Asked if optioning Houck to Triple-A Worcester is on the table, Cora replied, 'Yes.' Houck's last 60 outings in the majors have all been starts. He hasn't made a relief appearance since Aug. 2, 2022. But the Red Sox aren't ruling out him returning as a reliever. 'Bres (chief baseball officer Craig Breslow) is not here. So they'll make a decision and we'll inform you guys,' Cora said. Houck allowed 10 runs in 15 ⅔ innings (5.74 ERA) on 18 hits and six walks while striking out 15 over five rehab outings (four starts). Four of those five outings came with Worcester. One outing was with Double-A Portland. He did pitch better in his final two rehab outings, allowing just one run, six hits and two walks while striking out 10 in 9 ⅓ innings.
