Kuching residents brace for overnight water supply disruption from Aug 13 amid pipeline repairs

KUCHING, Aug 11 — Consumers in several areas here are expected to experience low water pressure or a temporary water supply disruption from 9pm on August 13 to 8am on August 14 due to pipeline repair works along Jalan Matang–Batu Kawa. The affected areas are Jalan Matang (Kubah Ria to Mile 9), Taman Sri Harmoni, Jalan Sungai Tengah, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub, Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin, Jalan Demak, Jalan Bako, Muara Tebas, Petra Jaya and surrounding JBALB areas. In a statement today, Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd (SWSB) Southern Region Office said a 750mm diameter Mild Steel Cement Lined (MSCL) pumping main along Jalan Matang–Batu Kawa, near Emart Moyan, experienced its first-ever burst on August 6. The incident affected the treated water supply to areas including Batu Kawa, Moyan, Jalan Batu Kawa–Malihah, Matang Jaya, Petra Jaya, Demak Laut, JBALB Semariang and surrounding areas. SWSB Southern Region Office said its team responded promptly to isolate the leak, preventing further damage to the roadway, underground utilities and infrastructure. Repair work was successfully completed on August 7, ahead of the initially scheduled timeline. Following the repairs, immediate flushing was carried out to restore clean water supply to affected areas including Batu Kawa, Moyan, Matang Jaya, Petra Jaya and surrounding areas. 'Unscheduled repair works on the 1100mm diameter MSCL pumping main, which were temporarily halted at 3.30am on August 6 due to dewatering challenges, site conditions and technical constraints, are set to resume once all preparatory steps are completed. 'The pipeline was dislocated, with welding completed on approximately three-quarters of its circumference. Persistent leakage at the bottom section requires full rectification,' explained SWSB Southern Region Office. To minimise delays, SWSB Southern Region Office has proactively fabricated the necessary fittings locally and is addressing the issues on-site. These two pumping mains are supplying directly to the Bukit Siol reservoir. Reservoir levels at Bukit Siol, Datu Muda, Pending, and Mile 9 3/4 are being built up to satisfactory levels to prevent widespread water pressure issues during the repair process. SWSB Southern Region Office said water tankers will be mobilised to the affected areas and advised consumers to store sufficient water before the scheduled repair window. It assured consumers that efforts are being made to minimise disruptions and restore a stable water supply, adding: 'We appreciate your understanding and patience during this period.' — The Borneo Post

Sinkhole-hit Tanjong Katong Road South to progressively reopen from Aug 2

SINGAPORE: The affected sections of Tanjong Katong Road South will reopen in stages from Saturday (Aug 2), the Land Transport Authority and PUB said in a joint statement on Friday, a week after the formation of a sinkhole forced its closure. Tanjong Katong Road South, from East Coast Parkway (ECP) to Mountbatten Road, will open to traffic on Saturday noon while the opposite direction from Mountbatten Road to ECP will open on Monday morning from 5am, the agencies added. "The Land Transport Authority and PUB have completed repair works and safety assessment of the affected road sections along Tanjong Katong Road South, as well as the surrounding roads," the statement read. "These checks, conducted in consultation with the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), have confirmed that the roads are safe for use." The site where the sinkhole opened up along Tanjong Katong Road South is adjacent to an active PUB worksite involving the construction of a 16m-deep shaft to connect three existing sewer lines. A concrete component in the shaft "failed" at around 5.50pm last Saturday, according to the national water agency. Around the same time, a sinkhole formed on the adjacent road, causing a car to fall in. LTA and PUB said that government agencies have, over the past week, worked to stabilise the ground by backfilling the sinkhole with liquefied stabilised soil. This is a mixture of soil, water and cement which is commonly used to fill up voids underground. "Following this, a series of rigorous tests were conducted to assess the ground condition and confirm that it was safe for reopening," they added. "These include probing to check for voids and weak ground, ground penetrating radar surveys to detect subsurface abnormalities and seismic surveys to map the density and stability of underground layers. "Based on these scans, no anomalies or cavities were detected within the area." Bus services 36 and 48, which were temporarily diverted, will also resume their original routing in the east-bound direction towards Changi Airport and Bedok on Saturday noon. As for the west-bound direction towards the city via ECP, they will serve all the affected bus stops along Tanjong Katong Road South, Mountbatten, Amber and Marine Parade roads on Monday, from the start of service. "Motorists may continue to see ongoing works in the area, including repairs to underground utilities or laying of new utilities in replacement of damaged utilities after the roads have reopened," said LTA and PUB.

Map of areas facing water supply restrictions this weekend

Residents of Dublin , Kildare and Wicklow are being urged by Uisce Éireann to reduce their water consumption this bank holiday weekend to avoid widespread outages. Three areas of Kildare will experience water outages as the national water utility conducts 'complex and critical' repair works to the main pipeline servicing the Greater Dublin Area . The works are due to begin late on Friday. While reservoirs have been filled to ensure minimal disruption to most people in the region, Uisce Éireann is asking householders to avoid unnecessary consumption to maximise the time technicians have to repair the pipeline. Map of areas which could face disruption due to repairs on Ballymore Eustace to Saggart pipeline. Illustration: Uisce Éireann When is the water supply in Kildare, Dublin and Wicklow likely to be affected? READ MORE The works are scheduled to begin at 10pm on Friday, with interruptions expected to occur from then until 3am on Sunday. Will my water just be reduced or will I have nothing for that period? Just under 1,000 people living in Kill, Arthurstown, Rathmore, Athgoe and Tipperkevin in Kildare will experience an outage. Alternative water supplies are being provided in Rathmore National School and Kill Equestrian Centre in Newtown. However, most people in Dublin and Wicklow will not experience an effect to their supply unless water levels become too low too quickly, an Uisce Éireann spokesperson said. Residents may experience low water pressure and discoloured water. How should I prepare for the water interruption? People in the most affected areas of Kildare are asked to use water only for essential needs to help maintain everyone's supply. Households there are advised to ensure they have enough drinking water by filling jugs of water and storing them in the fridge before the affected period. Uisce Éireann is also asking people to turn off all preprogrammed appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines, particularly overnight on Saturday and Sunday as these machines may empty a household's tank. Residents of Dublin and Wicklow are asked to avoid unnecessary water usage such as hosing a lawn, washing a car with a hose, power-hosing, filling up paddling pools or taking a bath instead of a shower. 'Reducing your water use will help maintain or extend water supply during the repairs for yourself and importantly for vulnerable and high-risk users including hospitals and care homes,' Uisce Éireann regional operations manager Stephen Burke said. Will there be backup water supplies? Uisce Éireann has ensured all water reservoirs in the region are filled before works begin on the pipeline. It said most homes and businesses had on-site water storage as a backup water source for sanitation purposes. Why are these works needed now? The national water utility has identified several leaks and sections at risk of failing in the main pipeline connecting Ballymore Eustace Water Treatment Plant and the Saggart Reservoir. They say the works planned for this weekend will safeguard water supplies for the Greater Dublin Area into the future. Uisce Éireann said the works had been planned for the bank holiday weekend because demand for water was typically lower than usual. Why do the works cause supply disruption? These planned repair works will put increased pressure on the supply of drinking water as main water supplies will be temporarily cut off between Saggart Reservoir and Ballymore Eustace Water Treatment Plant. While the water is off, technicians will enter the pipeline to repair five active leaks. Another team will replace 35 metres of worn-out pipeline with a new section of pipe. Uisce Éireann's programme manager, Declan Healy, said the organisation had 'extensively planned and prepared for carrying out these complex works over the last nine months'. The service said the repair crews had a 'very tight deadline to finish the repairs and refill the pipeline with water'. How can I save water? Uisce Éireann said customers across the Greater Dublin Area could help to avoid water outages for themselves and others by reducing water consumption . It suggested shortening showers by a minute, which could save up to seven litres of water, and always ensuring dishwashers and washing machines were fully loaded. In the longer term, it said water can be saved by installing a smaller flush in a toilet cistern, while homes and businesses should be checked for leaks.

Delays expected due to double lane closure on bridge

Rush hour drivers were expected to feel the brunt of worsened traffic on the Orwell Bridge near Ipswich after two lanes were shut at the same time. They were closed on the major route through Suffolk to allow for £6m repair works to continue on Monday. Widespread delays previously broke out when an eastbound carriageway was closed on Monday, 23 June, which was followed by a westbound lane on Saturday. Martin Fellows, from National Highways, warned motorists using the A14 to "allow extra time" for their journeys. While the lanes were shut, traffic was limited to 60mph on the eastbound side and 40mph for those travelling west while the contraflow system was in place. Work to replace 37-year-old joints on the bridge was expected to be completed by late August. It has been a point of concern for Dan Trent, owner of Dan's Coach Travel in Stowmarket. "It's causing delays to our customers, passengers, drivers - it's causing them stress that they don't need," he said. Mike Barrett, who runs a food charity in Ipswich, added the traffic was already increasing "mileage, delivery times, fuel costs" prior to the westbound closure. Queues had previously gone back as far as Sproughton and caused delays on the A12 at the Copdock Interchange. National Highways acknowledged the traffic issues but said the structural project was essential. Mr Fellows thanked drivers for their patience in the interim. "We remain confident that all works will be completed by mid to late August, as originally planned," he added. "The A14 will still be your best route whilst we are doing this work, so please stay on the A14, but allow extra time for your journey." Follow Suffolk news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.
