Disability centre residents say ‘bank cards kept in safe by staff'
A number of residents of disability centres said their bank cards were kept in a safe by staff and they had to ask to access their own money, the health watchdog has reported. In a report published by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) on Friday, it found that while many residents showed an awareness of their rights, some spoke about challenges with their rights. Advertisement A number reported how they could not always go out because of staff shortages or felt they did not have enough say in decisions, like going shopping or what to buy. Some residents also shared experiences where they felt their rights of choice and decision-making were limited. HIQA published its 2024 Resident Forums report, which captures the voices and experiences of people living in residential services for people with disabilities. HIQA said it held 13 face-to-face forums across the country, with 103 residents across 13 different service providers, to hear about their experiences of living in residential services. Advertisement The watchdog said that residents showed a strong awareness of their rights and gave examples of how these are respected in their daily lives. These included the ability to see family, lock their door, manage their own money and live in a safe and comfortable home. Residents told inspectors about the importance of staff knocking before entering their rooms and having privacy when visitors come over. Some residents also felt staff should be reminded to always knock before entering their rooms. Some residents also spoke about challenges with their rights. A few residents said their bank cards were kept in a safe by staff, meaning they had to ask to access their own money. Advertisement Many residents also wanted to have HIQA inspection reports made more accessible, and asked for them to be shared with them. Many told HIQA that they did not know what happened after an inspection and said they wanted to be more involved about its results. Residents also spoke about choice and independence, and described deciding where they went, what they ate and how important it was to be part of the community. Others spoke about how much their independence meant to them and how they had been supported to take part in education and work. Advertisement Many residents said they had regular meetings in their homes where they discussed things like food choices and activities. Another said their house did not have meetings. Some also felt that when they did speak up, their views were not always listened to. Some residents shared experiences where they felt their rights of choice and decision-making were limited. Two residents mentioned a concert which they wished to attend but the trip was cancelled at the last minute without explanation. Advertisement They felt it was due to concerns about another resident potentially having a 'wobble' at the event, which meant no one was able to go. Another resident said their doctor decided what food they could eat because of their weight and staff would not let them have a takeaway if they wanted one. Another resident shared how they did not get a say when they moved house. HIQA said that, overall, residents felt their rights were respected in many ways but also saw areas where things could improve. This was particularly around communication, decision-making and ensuring their privacy and independence were always upheld.

Trash pickup delays continue this week as Republic Services workers continue Stockton strike
As Republic Services and Teamsters Local 439 continue negotiations, Stockton residents continue to accumulate trash on their curbs. The city of Stockton announced on Tuesday a new Republic Services residential trash collection schedule for the rest of the week. The schedule shows a delay of two or more days for each regular pickup day. On Tuesday, Republic Services said it will continue limited residential trash collection services. Trash regularly collected on Friday will continue to be picked up Tuesday and Wednesday, city officials stated in a Facebook post. "Republic Services is not collecting recycling or organics carts at this time. Customers should remove them from the curb until further instructions are given," city officials said in a Facebook post. "Republic Services and the City will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available. Thank you for your continued patience." Customers on the regular Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday collection days who still have trash in their carts should notify Republic Services at (209) 466-3604, city officials said. Additional trash bags will also be collected by Republic Services if they are placed inside or next to the trash cart. Regular Service Day: Thursday, July 10, temporary service day Monday, July 14. Regular Service Day: Friday, July 11, temporary service day Tuesday, July 15. Regular Service Day: Monday, July 14, temporary service day Wednesday, July 16. Regular Service Day: Tuesday, July 15, temporary service day Thursday, July 17. Regular Service Day: Wednesday, July 16, temporary service day Friday, July 18. Members of the Teamsters Local 439 employed by Republic Services are still on strike. Sanitation workers went on strike Tuesday, July 8 in an effort to reach an agreement with Republic Services. Matt McQuaid, communications project manager at International Brotherhood of Teamsters, told The Stockton Record via email on July 9 that Teamsters Local 439 are asking Republic Services for "a living wage that's consistent with industry standards, affordable and accessible health care, and fair work rules." McQuaid said Tuesday afternoon that Teamsters Local 439 and Republic Services had met on Monday. "The two parties are still very far apart. We are currently bargaining again with the employer. Picket lines and extensions remain in place," McQuaid said. "We're grateful for the outpouring of community support we have received." This is not only a Stockton effort. Teamsters all over the country are now on a national strike. According to a Teamsters news release, picket lines have reached Los Angeles and Ohio, which has a major landfill. This will impact more than 2 million Los Angeles residents; in Youngstown, Ohio, 12 million pounds of trash per day from New York City and New Jersey will not be able to be unloaded at one of the largest landfills, according to Teamsters officials. "It's shocking, and increasingly disgusting, how far Republic Services is willing to push its workforce. Our members are everyday Americans performing essential services across our communities, but Republic is unwilling to offer workers good wages, decent benefits, or a fair contract," said Sean M. O'Brien, Teamsters general president in the news release. "The American public needs to understand that Republic Services and its overpaid, corrupt executives own this strike. Their greed is forcing trash collectors and waste haulers across the country out into the street. We don't want this garbage piling up. We want to return to work. But we refuse to be exploited." It is unknown how many Stockton and San Joaquin County residents are affected by the continued waste pickup collection delays. "We are committed to providing service for all of our customers as we continue discussions with the union to reach an agreement that benefits our Forward Landfill employees and our customers. Our Forward Landfill employees have expanded their picketing to other locations, and many Bay Area employees are refusing to cross the picket line," Republic Services website states. "We have mobilized additional Republic Services employees to assist with collections. Many customers are on a modified service schedule." Republic Services also stated on its website that trash collection routes are currently being prioritized over recycling routes. "At this time, all residents should leave their containers out for collection," Republic Services stated on its website. Republic Services offers waste collection services for more than 22 cities and counties. These include: Amador county Antioch Benicia Clayton Clovis Daly City Fairfield Fremont Fresno County Fresno Half Moon Bay Martinez Newark Newby Island Resource Recovery Park Piedmont Pleasant Hill Salinas San Jose Stockton Suisun City Unincorporated Contra Costa County Union City For Republic Services waste collection services updates, visit or call (209) 466-3604 or visit the city of Stockton Facebook page at City of Stockton - Government.
