US transfers acreage near proposed mining road to Alaska native group

July 16 (Reuters) - The Trump administration transferred 28,000 acres (11,331 hectares) in a remote part of Northwest Alaska to a native corporation, putting more land near a proposed mining road under local control. The move is aligned with President Donald Trump's pledge to remove barriers to energy and resource development in the state. "By putting land into Alaska Native hands, we are advancing opportunity in Alaska, while reducing federal barriers to resource development," Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said in a statement. The acreage was conveyed to NANA Regional Corporation, which is based in Kotzebue, Alaska. The corporation is controlled by the Inupiat tribe. NANA was not immediately available for comment. NANA supports construction of a road to the Ambler mining district, an area with copper, zinc and lead deposits, but severed ties last year to a project proposed by an Alaska state agency. The Biden administration later rejected that road, citing risks to caribou and fish populations and native communities.

Western premiers agree to develop new economic corridors, call for federal support

YELLOWKNIFE — Canada's western premiers say they've agreed to identify, plan and develop new economic corridors to connect provincial resources to international markets. The leaders from British Columbia, the Prairie provinces and the northern territories, after meeting for two days in Yellowknife, say its time for Western Canada to become the country's economic engine. The premiers say building new infrastructure for resource development will be beneficial for all Canadians. The annual meeting comes two weeks before all Canada's premiers are to gather with Prime Minister Mark Carney in Saskatoon. The western premiers say they'll need Carney's support in building new economic corridors and are specifically asking for his help in connecting ports on the West Coast to the coast of Hudson Bay. They say new federal funding programs will be necessary to reach their goals. This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 22, 2025. PM Modi mourns death of Padma Shri KV Rabiya

Late KV Rabiya, Kerala's literacy icon NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday mourned the death of KV Rabiya, a distinguished social worker from Malappuram, who passed away at a local hospital on Sunday after a brief illness. She was 59. Affected by polio at the age of 14, Rabiya continued her education from home, confined to a wheelchair, but refused to let physical limitations hinder her mission. In June 1992, Rabiya, a prominent figure in Kerala's literacy movement, launched an adult literacy campaign in Tirurangadi, near her native village of Vellilakkad in Malappuram district. Her unwavering efforts enabled hundreds of people to embrace literacy, transforming lives across generations. In recognition of her contributions to social work, Rabiya was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2022. She had earlier received the national youth award from the ministry of human resource development in 1994, marking her first national recognition. Over the years, she was also the recipient of numerous accolades from the Kerala government and various social organisations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mulheres acima dos 40: Anvisa libera mineral que estica as rugas Beleza Feminina Clique aqui Undo Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned her passing and said, "Pained by the passing away of Padma Shri awardee, KV Rabiya Ji.
