Routine regulation and inspection of restaurants is conducted by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The Department of Health is responsible for investigation and control of food-borne illness outbreaks associated with all food establishments. How do I report a dirty restaurant in Florida? If you see abuses of state standards, report them and the Department of Business and Professional Regulation will send inspectors. Call the Florida DBPR at 850-487-1395 or report a restaurant for health violations online. Get the whole story at our restaurant inspection database. What does all that terminology in Florida restaurant inspections mean? Basic violations are those considered against best practices. A warning is issued after an inspector documents violations that must be corrected by a certain date or within a specified number of days from receipt of the inspection report. An administrative complaint is a form of legal action taken by the division. Insufficient compliance after a warning, a pattern of repeat violations or existence of serious conditions that warrant immediate action may result in the division initiating an administrative complaint against the establishment. Says the division website: "Correcting the violations is important, but penalties may still result from violations corrected after the warning time was over." An emergency order — when a restaurant is closed by the inspector — is based on an immediate threat to the public. Here, the Division of Hotels and Restaurants director has determined that the establishment must stop doing business and any division license is suspended to protect health, safety or welfare of the public. A 24-hour call-back inspection will be performed after an emergency closure or suspension of license. Quebec restaurants can now charge you for making a reservation and not showing up

Quebec restaurant owners can now charge a fee to people who make a reservation but don't show up. Under new rules in effect today, restaurants can charge up to $10 for each no-show. An association representing Quebec restaurant owners has estimated that no-shows cost the average eatery about $49,000 per year. Meanwhile, the Canadian restaurant industry association says Quebec was the only province with consumer protection laws that expressly forbade restaurants from charging no-show fees. Quebec restaurants have to follow a number of rules to apply the fee, including reminding customers of an upcoming reservation and giving them an easy way to cancel. The fee can be applied only to groups of two or more, and only if none of the members of the party shows up. WATCH | How no-shows impact restaurants: A no-show at a Quebec restaurant could soon cost you a fee 4 months ago After years of pressure from Quebec restaurants claiming tens of thousands of dollars in annual losses thanks to customers who make reservations and don't show up for them, the provincial government is proposing regulations that would provide restaurants some protections.

Look: Giant red onion, size of baby's head, arrives in Dubai

An onion the size of a baby's head and weighing nearly 1kg has caught the attention of shoppers and restaurant owners at Dubai's Al Awir Market. Priced at Dh2.5 per kg, this massive onion is being sold at Bloom Market in Al Awir. 'I have been working in Al Awir for 18 years, and I have never seen an onion this big,' said longtime vendor Mohammed Yaseen, holding one up with both hands. 'It's almost the size of a face.' The giant onion, imported from China, is almost triple the size of regular onions that usually weigh between 100 to 200 grams. 'People come here out of curiosity. They look at it, take pictures, buy one, and then come back to take more,' Yaseen. 'Some just can't believe it's real until they touch it.' According to Yaseen, the onion has a high water content and a slightly different taste compared to regular onions. 'It's sweeter and milder. When people cut it, they don't cry,' he said. Because of its large size and juicy texture, the onion is gaining popularity among restaurant owners too. 'Chefs and restaurant buyers are buying it in bulk,' said Yaseen. 'They say it gives salads a better taste and works well for gravy too.' The unusual vegetable has turned into a bit of a local attraction at the market. 'One customer told me it reminded him of his childhood when vegetables were bigger and tastier,' Yaseen added. While not officially confirmed as the world's largest onion, it's certainly the biggest most Dubai shoppers have seen. And at Dh2.50 a kg, it's also turning out to be a good deal. 'It's not just the size. People love it because it tastes good and stands out,' Yaseen said.

New Illinois laws, taxes starting July 1 include single use plastic restrictions, tipped minimum wage increase, vape tax

Several new Illinois laws and tax increases take effect on July 1, 2025, including new rules for single-use plastics, a tipped minimum wage increase, and taxes on sports bets, vaping and gas. There are also new taxes and new rules for short-term vacation rentals and a general Chicago minimum wage increase. Here are some of the biggest changes set to take effect on Tuesday. Chicago minimum wage and tipped minimum wage increases Unlike the rest of the state of Illinois, Chicago's minimum wage increases happen annually on July 1. This year, the general Chicago minimum wage will go up to $16.60 for employers with four or more employees, while the tipped minimum wage will rise to $12.62 per hour. The minimum wage increases are part of the One Fair Wage Ordinance approved in 2023 to eventually bring tipped wages up and in line with the same minimum wage as all other city workers. The tipped workers' minimum wage will continue to increase 8% each year until it reaches the city's minimum wage for non-tipped workers in 2028. Some restaurant owners say the increases have caused a great strain on their businesses, leaving them to choose between passing the cost to customers through prices or hiring less staff. A similar initiative was passed in Washington, D.C. in 2022 to much fanfare. But Mayor Muriel Bowser has now called for its repeal, saying the method is failing employees and small businesses. Tobacco and vape produce tax increase Taxes on vapes, nicotine pouches, cigars and other tobacco products increases on July 1 from 15% to 45%. The move is expected to generate nearly $30 million in new revenue for the state. Taxes on cigarettes are also increasing $1 per pack on Tuesday. The Illinois Fuel & Retail Association, which represents gas stations in Illinois, is concerned that the vape, pouch, and tobacco tax could send some potential customers across state lines. Gas tax hike From July 1 through June 30,2026, Illinois gas tax rates are increasing. Gasoline will now be taxed $0.483 per gallon up from $0.47 per gallon last year. Diesel fuel will be taxed at $0.558 per gallon, up from $0.545 per gallon last year. Small single use plastic bottles outlawed from hotels The Small Single-Use Plastic Bottle Act takes effect on July 1 and bans hotels with 50 rooms or more from providing small single-use plastic bottles containing shampoo, conditioner, soap and other personal care products. Hotels will instead stock those items through larger, refillable dispensers in bathrooms and showers. The law aims to cut down on single-use plastic waste in the hospitality industry. The law went into effect on Jan. 1, but hotels were given until July 1 to be in compliance. Tax on online sports betting Starting July 1, Illinois sportsbooks will pay $0.25 on the first 20 million online bets statewide annually, and then $0.50 on every bet after that. While sports betting companies like FanDuel and DraftKings are expected to eat the costs for a period of time, FanDuel has already said it will begin charging a 50 cent fee on every wager placed in Illinois on Sept. 1, 2025. DraftKings followed shortly with their own announcement of the same 50 cent fee also starting Sept. 1. Airbnb, VRBO subject to Hotel Occupation Tax Starting July 1, short-term rentals offered through sites like Airbnb and VRBO will be subject to the state's Hotel Operators' Occupation Tax of 6% of 94% gross receipts. Short term rental business owners are responsible for paying the tax, but may pass the cost along to their guests. The hotel tax is on top of other state and local lodging taxes already in effect for short-term rentals.
