Chile's Codelco authorised to partially restart El Teniente mine operations

Chile's Labor Directorate has sanctioned the partial and gradual resumption of underground activities at the El Teniente mine, operated by Codelco. This decision comes after an earthquake-triggered collapse that claimed six lives. Operations at El Teniente, recognised as one of the world's largest underground copper mines, were halted in specific sectors due to the incident. The approved restart includes the Dacita, Diablo Regimiento, Esmeralda, Esmeralda Panel, Pilar Norte, Reno Panel, Reservas Norte and Upper Pacific, while the shutdown persists in Recursos Norte, Andesita, Andes Norte and Diamante. The return to operations is being managed through a plan that mandates reflection sessions at the start of each shift to brief workers on the return strategy, support measures, safety protocols and supervisory authority actions. It also emphasises two-way communication within the mine and enhanced presence control using Tracking & Asset Management and Tipping Point Management systems. Additional measures include personal protective equipment checks, habitability condition reviews, continuous updates on seismic activity, information dissemination to unions and coordination with partner companies to ensure comprehensive worker awareness. The reactivation commenced with Shift C, involving 710 personnel, 131 of whom entered the mine, followed by Shift A, which included 1,770 workers tasked with reactivation duties. During this initial phase, ore shipments to the processing plant were roughly 50% below normal levels, while operations at the plant and smelter were fully reinstated. Inspection efforts have also been stepped up, with two inspectors from the Chilean government agency Sernageomin arriving on Sunday to conduct evaluations in the Andes Norte sector. Codelco reported that it has efficiently responded to 21 inquiries from various regulatory and investigative bodies including the the Attorney General's Office, the Chamber of Deputies, the Labor Directorate, the PDI, the Regional Ministry of Health and Sernageomin. Meanwhile, Codelco's Internal Investigative Commission is continuing to meet to determine the precise causes of the accident. Dubai: Emirates resumes daily flights to Tehran from July 18

Dubai's local carrier Emirates is all set to resume operations between the UAE and Tehran on July 18, the carrier announced on July 16. The airline had earlier extended suspensions until July 17, after initially halting flights until June 30 followed by July 5. The suspensions came amid the 12-day attacks between Israel, US and Iran, leading to some airspace closures and multiple airlines cancelling their flights. Emirates stated it will be resuming operations with daily flights to the capital city. Customers with a confirmed booking to Tehran will be accepted to travel from the point of origin, whereas those holding a confirmed booking with flydubai from Dubai to Iran will also be accepted to travel from the point of origin. Flights between Dubai and three cities in Iran via flydubai had returned to full operations since July 4. Travellers have also been advised to check their flight timings on the flight status page and in case of rebooking, they must contact travel agencies. For those who directly booked with Emirates, they can contact the airline. The world's largest international carrier said on June 24 that it had resumed regularly scheduled operations after 'minimal disruption' due to the conflict. It "took immediate action by suspending flights only to areas directly impacted by conflict while maintaining operations to all other destinations." Emirates successfully maintained scheduled services by rerouting flights to avoid conflict zones. It flew over 1.7 million passengers on more than 5,800 flights during the crisis.

Mozambique paves way for TotalEnergies to restart $20bln LNG project, report says

Mozambique has created the necessary conditions for the resumption of TotalEnergies' $20 billion liquefied natural gas project in the country, the country's energy minister was quoted as saying by Portuguese news agency Lusa on Monday. TotalEnergies, which halted construction in 2021 after an Islamic State-linked insurgency attack threatened its Afungi site in the north of Mozambique, has said it wants to resume development this summer. TotalEnergies' CEO Patrick Pouyanne met with Mozambique President Daniel Chapo on Thursday to discuss restarting activities after security interventions helped reduce, but not entirely eradicate, insurgent attacks around its base. "It was a meeting with the perspective of restarting activities," Estevao Pale, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy said at an event in Inhambane province on Monday, referring to the president's meeting last week. "At the government level, all the conditions are being created to allow investors to restart activities as quickly as possible," Lusa quoted Pale as saying. TotalEnergies declined to comment.
