If Your Amazon Password Is On This Website, Change It Now

Republished on August 12 with Amazon's updated security guidance for users and a warning that the latest text attack has suddenly surged almost 1000% in 2 days. Amazon password attacks are now driving headlines, as hackers impersonate the retail giant with malicious messages to steal passwords and access accounts. 'Scammers that attempt to impersonate Amazon put consumers at risk,' the company tells me. But your account is even more at risk from attackers who may have acquired your password from a breach or infostealer campaign, or because it's weak and easily broken. Given the surge in attacks, you need to address these risks right away. As I have warned before, the latest Amazon lure is the promise of a refund for a recent purchase. It comes by way of a text message with a link 'to request your refund.' Clicking through takes you to a fake sign-in window that steals your password. The FTC and Better Business Bureau have both issued warnings. Amazon says it 'will continue to invest in protecting consumers and educating the public on scam avoidance. We encourage consumers to report suspected scams to us so that we can protect their accounts and refer bad actors to law enforcement to help keep consumers safe.' This latest attack highlights the insecurity of password access. If you have nothing but a username and password protecting your account, then your account is at risk. And if your password is weak, then your account is wide open to attack. As ESET's Jake Moore warns, 'criminals have the ability to test stolen and common passwords across multiple sites at once and many people who reuse passwords will see their accounts compromised.' Amazon told me 'we encourage customers to use two-step verification and Passkeys to help protect their accounts. We have a helpful article about the importance of using a Passkey and how to sign up here.' You should do that as soon as you can. Guardio has told me that the refund scam has evolved and is now surging again. A new version of the text phrasing 'first appeared on August 9, increased by 590% on August 10,' and has continued since. In total, it has surged almost 1000% in just a few days. Two recent reports have shone a light on the most common passwords in use, providing good advice on what to avoid and how predictable we all can be. NordPass publishes a list of the 'most common passwords' and you can assume every hacker has this to hand. Meanwhile, CyberNews analyzed passwords in the '19 billion leaked passwords' breach. This wasn't really a new breach despite the headlines, but it was a valuable collation of smaller breaches and infostealer troves. But the list that's even more telling is CyberGhost's, with its 'worst passwords in the last decade.' Spin through this guide to all things you shouldn't do with passwords, whether it's keyboard patterns, numbers, animal names, sports, cars or celebrities. Have you immortalized your beloved dog, Charlie, in all of your online passwords?' CyberGhost asks. 'While he may be tasked to protect your home (or at least his food bowl), your heartfelt dedication might actually be compromising your digital safety.' You really need to add a passkey and enable two-factor authentication on your account. Amazon is a prized target and doesn't mandate 2FA, leaving a vast number of accounts protected by nothing but passwords. As CyberGhost warns: 81% of account breaches are caused by weak passwords, 60% of people use the same passwords across multiple accounts and unsurprisingly 90% of people worry about account compromises. If you're struggling to conjure up good passwords, then fortunately, as Moore suggests, 'password managers are now easier than ever to use and they can generate strong, unique passwords and store them securely. Furthermore, when combined with multi-factor authentication, they offer a significant boost to account security.' If you have nothing but a weak password in place, then you should worry. Amazon told me that 'more than 320 million Amazon customers are now using passkeys to experience the convenience of passwordless sign-in on and many of our shopping web domains around the world.' Amazon says it is 'encouraged by how many of our customers are using passkeys, and are committed to expanding their availability across more apps and services.' But as Google has warned, even if passkeys are added to accounts, a password that remains in place is still a vulnerability if it also access the account. And that's especially true if the password is not shored up by strong, non-SMS 2FA. That means you still need to change an weak passwords on an Amazon or any other account.

Three Chinese firms make top ten in list of world's largest companies - but US retail giant still leads global league table

Three Chinese firms have made it onto the list of the world's top ten largest companies this year - but one US retail giant still leads the way. The annual Fortune Global 500 global league table revealed China 's State Grid ranks third, with China National Petroleum in fifth, and Sinopec close behind in sixth. But, while China has strong contenders this year, no firm has managed to overtake American giant Walmart - which holds the top spot for a 12th consecutive time. The list, published by Global Business Magazine, is determined based on data collected throughout the entirety of the previous year. This means for 2025, it's based on information about the companies from 2024, and last year's list was determined by 2023 details, and so on. Amazon was listed as the second largest company, followed by State Grid and Saudi Aramco. China-based State Grid is the biggest utilities company in the world, and Saudi Aramco a petroleum and natural gas company out of Saudi Arabia. China National Petroleum, Sinopec Group, and UnitedHealth Group followed in fifth, sixth, and seventh place, respectively. Apple, CVS Health, and Berkshire Hathaway rounded out the top 10. Although many of the list's findings might not come as a surprise, some companies have unexpectedly fallen far from their previously prominent places. The position of Apple, in particular, was shocking given that it was listed five spots lower than in 2024, according to Eqvista. But, the disappointing result is only a minor setback for the Tec giant, as it continues to expand year on year. Apple had roughly $387 billion in revenue for 2024, about a 2.8% increase from 2023, according to Forbes. Companies on the 2025 Fortune Global 500 list generated a record-breaking $41.7 trillion in revenue (up 1.8% from last year) and employed 70.1 million people worldwide. In 2024, these companies also recorded their second-most profitable year ever, earning a combined $2.98 trillion, a 0.4% increase from the previous year. It comes after Apple was officially crowned the world's biggest phonemaker last year. While Samsung has taken the top spot every year since 2010, it was finally knocked off its pedestal by Apple in 2023. Figures released by the International Data Corporation (IDC) reveal how Apple took 20.1 per cent of the market share last year – a 3.7 per cent increase on 2022. 'The biggest winner is clearly Apple,' said Nabila Popal, research director with IDC's Worldwide Tracker team. 'Not only is Apple the only player in the Top 3 to show positive growth annually, but also bags the number 1 spot annually for the first time ever.' Preliminary data from the IDC showed that 234.6 million iPhones were shipped in 2023, followed by 226.6 million Samsung smartphones. Xiaomi came in third, shipping 145.9 million smartphones last year, followed by OPPO (103.1 million) and Transsion (94.9 million).

Marks & Spencer is back online – these are my favourite fashion picks for summer

I spend a lot of time covering M&S, but the retail giant has been in the news for other reasons this year. Over the Easter weekend, M&S was forced to stop taking orders on its website after days of disruption in stores caused by a cyberattack. With deliveries paused and products in short supply, it's cost the retailer more than £300 million in sales. But, the good news is that online orders have now been resumed. As investigations into the cyber attack continue, stock is set to slowly return online for deliveries and click-and-collect orders. An M&S spokesperson told me: 'We're offering our bestselling products, along with newness and this makes up the majority of our range which is available online today (10 June).' 'More of our fashion, home and beauty ranges will be added every day. For products that are not available online, customers can add them to their 'wish list' and when they come back into stock we will let them know.' Customer loyalty will be key to M&S's survival, with analysts commenting that the retailer has been losing out to rivals. Indeed, the shutdown of online operations coincided with a spring heatwave in the UK, when many people were in the market for summer clothes. I spend much of my time browsing, trying on and reviewing the quality of clothes, particularly on the high street. Whether it's wedding guest dresses or sandals, M&S constantly impresses me with its comfortable and well-crafted clothes, low prices and on-trend styles. While its homeware easily rivals designer brands (see its Tekla-style towels or Pooky-inspired lamps), it's the retailer's fashion that really stands out. It's always been a go-to for well-fitted but feminine bras and soft pyjamas and dressing gowns that will last you years, but M&S used to have a reputation for dowdy clothing. Maddy Evans, director of womenswear at M&S, has led the charge to reinvigorate the brand's clothing offering. Former Topshop fashion director Evans has helped M&S shake those frumpy associations, targeting women who have one eye on the latest designed collections on the catwalk, and another on purse-friendly value. Its fashion takes runway trends and make them wearable day-to-day, all at affordable price points. So, with summer officially here and a heatwave predicted for this weekend, M&S online orders couldn't have resumed at a better time. Here's everything I'm bagging for this season. Giving the designer look for less, this pair of pumps earned a spot in our round-up of the best ballet flats for 2025. Combining the comfort we've come to expect from the high street stalwart with newly elevated style, the dainty style is available in white, black or red and features a slim sole, square toe and flat heel. The delicate self-tie bow fastening and ruched detailing elevate the simple silhouette. Trust me, they're the comfiest flats I own. Swap your florals for polka dot this season. The classic print is having a comeback and this sweet blouse is the perfect everyday style. Characterised by a round neckline and three bow-tie fastenings at the front, the top is cut into a peplum hem with puffed sleeves for extra impact. Finished in all-over polka dot, there's flower-jacquard embellishment for texture. Leopard print is perennially cool (it's a neutral, in my opinion), but the style is back in a big way this summer. M&S's playful take featured in my round-up of the best summer dresses for 2025. Boasting a body-skimming cut that flatters your silhouette, it runs true to size. Complete with a laidback crew neckline and mini hemline, the polyester fabric has a soft jersey feel. M&S also helpfully offers petite, regular and tall lengths, so you can find the perfect fit. An investment for your everyday wardrobe, this M&S style is designed with a fitted bodice and round neckline. The A-line skirt flows out from the waist for a midi hemline cut. Simple but sophisticated, style it with ballet flats and trainers day-to-day before jazzing it up with jewellery and kitten heels in the evening. M&S's linen rich skirt is finished in one of this season's hottest hues, tomato red. Distinguished by its A-line shape and ankle-grazing hem, the shirring on the waistband adds flattering detail. Tone down the bold red hue with a simple white Tee. An effortless way to look put-together, every wardrobe can benefit from a denim dress. This M&S style features a mid hemline and milk-maid style puffed sleeves, while the three bow tie fastenings in the body nod to Ganni. Better yet, there's side pockets. A great choice for Wimbledon or summer occasions, this pure cotton cami dress is finished in a timeless polka dot. Complete with a midaxi-length and flattering sweetheart neckline, the dress has subtle ruched detailing on the bodice to enhance your silhouette.
