Former Premier League referee Coote given eight-week ban over Klopp comments

Coote was sacked in December by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) after a video circulated on social media the previous month of him making derogatory remarks about Klopp and Liverpool in 2020. He has been further sanctioned by the FA for an "aggravated breach" of rule E3.2, because of the reference he made to Klopp's German nationality in the video. The FA's written reasons for the verdict announced Tuesday said Coote expressed "deep remorse" and acknowledged his comments were "crass and inappropriate". Coote was charged by the FA in June, with the English game's ruling body saying at the time he would face no further action in regard to separate allegations of gambling misconduct, which he had strenuously denied. The FA said those allegations had been fully investigated. A video showing Coote snorting white powder, reportedly during Euro 2024, emerged in November. Earlier this year European football's governing body UEFA banned Coote from any officiating activity until June 2026.

Simon Goodwin sacked as coach of Melbourne

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin has been sacked. The premiership-winning coach was told of the decision by the club's board on Monday night. Goodwin will receive a near one million dollar payout for next season. The board had lost faith in the team's direction under Goodwin. Since a historic 2021 premiership, the Demons have missed finals in 2024 and 2025 after two failed September campaigns in 2022 and 2023. While he was contracted for next season, senior Melbourne officials told Goodwin on Monday night that they wanted a change for 2026. The club is expected to hold a press conference at midday Tuesday. It is a bold call from the club, which is undergoing considerable change in its off-field leadership ranks, which has contributed to instability at the Dees this year. New CEO Paul Guerra will take over on September 8 with interim CEO David Chippindall leading Melbourne in his absence this season. Demons champion Brad Green has been a caretaker president, with respected former MCC boss Steven Smith set to take over as club president at the end of the year. The board had empowered Goodwin to make considerable change to the game style and team this season after conceding both its method and personnel which took it to the 2021 flag needed an overhaul. Despite a poor start to season, Goodwin was confident the Demons were on track to rise up the ladder next season with its ball movement changes and new midfield mix, however Melbourne had doubts after the loss to Carlton in round 19 and the final-term capitulation against St Kilda the week after. It leaves a cloud over the futures of some of Melbourne's biggest stars, including 2021 Norm Smith Medallist Christian Petracca who has received interest from Hawthorn. Petracca has kept silent on his future and will now likely hold off on a call until season's end. Goodwin will likely embark on a holiday and will be courted by media organisations to play a broadcast role in finals. The Herald Sun understands Goodwin wants to continue coaching after an initial break. Melbourne's board will now have to decide what it wants to do with its coach ahead of the 2026 season. Premiership coaches Adam Simpson and John Longmire, Pies assistant Hayden Skipworth and Bulldogs assistant Brendon Lade would be the early leading candidates. Goodwin opens up: Healing, hope and lifting Dees' heavy cloud Jay Clark is a leading AFL reporter for News Corp and CODE Sports, based in Melbourne. For almost 20 years, he has helped set the football agenda with his breaking news, deep-dive feature writing and issues-based reporting. He is a trusted voice on the biggest stories in the AFL. AFL Sam Draper has a mysterious phone call, Lethal made some big calls and Nick Riewoldt hosted the footy Logies. Josh Barnes has the good word what you missed on TV. AFL The cracks are starting to appear at the Pies, and their marquee recruits are right at the centre of Craig McRae's concerns, which couldn't have come at a worse time as we near September.

AFL coach Simon Goodwin is sensationally SACKED by the Melbourne Demons after a string of controversies and losses

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin has been sacked, with the board losing faith in the team's direction. The 48‑year‑old was reportedly told on Monday night after the club's win over the West Coast Eagles. Goodwin's future had been in doubt after opening the season with five straight losses, followed by another five‑game losing streak that crushed their finals chances. He will receive a payout of nearly $1million for next season despite being contracted through 2026. Goodwin has spent much of the past few years navigating a string of controversies that have repeatedly threatened to overshadow his premiership success. In early 2022, reports surfaced that the club board had considered standing him down over allegations of bullying, gambling with players and an incident at the Sorrento Hotel, but a review cleared him to continue. Melbourne Demons coach Simon Goodwin (pictured with wife Kris) has been sacked by the club after a season of poor results and ongoing controversies The Demons had just notched up a big win against the West Coast Eagles before the decision to cut ties with Goodwin Court documents lodged by former president Glen Bartlett and his partner later claimed Goodwin had used illicit drugs and behaved poorly after the 2019 grand final, accusations the coach and the club strongly rejected as unsubstantiated. Goodwin has consistently denied all drug rumours, saying they have damaged his reputation and hurt his family, while CEO Gary Pert has maintained the allegations are false and that the coach retains full board support. In mid‑2025, his handling of player welfare came under scrutiny when he publicly mentioned captain Max Gawn's private struggles, a revelation that reportedly blindsided Gawn and raised questions about internal trust. That came on the heels of a disastrous collapse against St Kilda, when Melbourne blew a 46‑point final‑quarter lead. Around the same time, a threatening social media post about Goodwin was reported to the AFL and police, although it was later revealed to be a hoax. The announcement still came with a degree of shock for Demons fans, after the club notched up a relieving 83-point win over the West Coast Eagles. 'I've said it all along, it's not about me,' Goodwin said after the win. 'It's about the footy team and the footy club and we think we've been building something throughout the year without outcome and sometimes that can be really tough for our supporters and it can be tough for people internally. 'But I'm really clear about what we're building and what we're trying to build and what we're trying to transition into and I can see it unfolding. 'But we need to learn how we turn the process into outcome and today was a part of that, but we've still got work to do.' The Melbourne Demons are 13th on the AFL ladder with a 7-13 record and three rounds left of the regular season. MORE TO FOLLOW

John Torode ‘blindsided' by MasterChef sacking 'he learnt about off BBC News'

MasterChef presenter John Torode reportedly discovered he had been sacked from the show after reading about it on the BBC News website. The 59-year-old chef was said to be 'heartbroken' after the BBC and production company Banijay confirmed his departure following allegations of racist language, which surfaced in the wake of the Gregg Wallace scandal. A source told The Sun: 'John had no idea. He was blindsided. 'John's agent received a call 11 minutes before the statements went out and hadn't had a chance to call him,' the insider added. 'He read about it on the BBC News website. Obviously he's heartbroken. He feels he's been made a scapegoat off the back of the Gregg Wallace report.' Torode alluded to not having been told prior to media reports appearing in a lengthy statement on Instagram on Tuesday evening, saying: 'Although I haven't heard from anyone at the BBC or Banijay - I am seeing and reading that I've been 'sacked' from MasterChef and I repeat that I have no recollection of what I'm accused of. 'The enquiry could not even state the date or year of when I am meant to have said something wrong. 'I'd hoped that I'd have some say in my exit from a show I've worked on since its relaunch in 2005, but events in last few days seem to have prevented that.' Another source told the Sun that Torode had already planned to step down from the show at the end of this week. The Australian-born chef started presenting MasterChef alongside Wallace in 2005. In his statemnt Torode said Celebrity MasterChef and two Christmas specials which he recently filmed 'will be my last'. It is not clear if the BBC will air these shows. He went on: 'Personally, I have loved every minute working on MasterChef, but it's time to pass the cutlery to someone else. For whoever takes over, love it as I have. 'I will watch fondly from afar as I now focus on the many other exciting projects that I have been working towards. My tummy will be grateful for a rest after 20 years of eating, but what a joy it has been.' On Monday night, Torode confirmed he was the subject of an allegation of using racist language that was upheld as part of a review carried out by law firm Lewis Silkin into the alleged behaviour of his co-presenter Wallace. Then on Tuesday, BBC director-general Tim Davie condemned the 'serious racist term' used by Torode, after it was announced his contract on MasterChef will not be renewed. In an interview with BBC News on Tuesday, Davie said he saw the situation as an opportunity for the corporation to 'reset'. He said he was not directly involved with the matter but was told about the recommendation not to renew Torode's contract and was 'happy that the team were taking action'. He went on: 'It's really important that we are taking this seriously. It's a reset where we make sure that people are living up to the values we expect across the board.' Asked exactly what Torode said, Davie replied: 'I'm not going to give you the exact term, because I think, frankly it was serious racist term, a serious racist term, which does not get to be acceptable in any way, shape or form.' A statement from production company Banijay UK released earlier said: 'In response to John Torode's statement, it is important to stress that Banijay UK takes this matter incredibly seriously. 'The legal team at Lewis Silkin that investigated the allegations relating to Gregg Wallace also substantiated an accusation of highly offensive racist language against John Torode which occurred in 2018. 'This matter has been formally discussed with John Torode by Banijay UK, and whilst we note that John says he does not recall the incident, Lewis Silkin have upheld the very serious complaint. 'Banijay UK and the BBC are agreed that we will not renew his contract on MasterChef.' The Lewis Silkin report, commissioned by Banijay UK, found 45 out of 83 allegations against Wallace were substantiated, alongside two standalone allegations made against other people, including one for using racist language. Torode confirmed on Monday night he was the person alleged to have used racist language but said he had 'no recollection of the incident' and was 'shocked and saddened' by the allegation. 'I have absolutely no recollection of any of this, and I do not believe that it happened. However, I want to be clear that I've always had the view that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment,' he said. 'I'm shocked and saddened by the allegation as I would never wish to cause anyone any offence.'
