Edmonton community leagues plead for $30M for hall repairs with ¼ of them in ‘poor' shape
An Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues banner in an unidentified hall. With Edmonton's community league halls aging, volunteers who run them say they need $30 million in urgent safety upgrades. Of the 97 halls the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) has assessed over the last two years, a quarter are considered to be in poor condition, while more than half are in fair shape. The EFCL says issues include locked or poorly maintained emergency exits, inadequate emergency lighting, non-functioning alarm systems and some structural issues... 'To be clear, these are a risk to occupant safety, to human life,' Shaun Good, the EFCL's infrastructure and amenities advisor, told Edmonton city council's community and public services committee on Monday. 'They are not nice-to-have upgrades. They are the minimum to ensure that people, including children and seniors and people with disabilities, can use and exit safely during an emergency situation.' The $30-million ask is something Coun. Erin Rutherford said she's not willing to endorse given other priorities. '$30 million is not something – I can't speak for my colleagues – that I would in any way support,' Rutherford, who represents Ward Anirniq in the city's northwest, said in response on Monday. 'We're not even meeting life maintenance renewal on city-owned facilities.' Community leagues can apply for city funding for infrastructure upgrades. Councillors are asking the leagues to prioritize renovations with city staff for a report due back at council next spring.

Safety upgrades coming to West Springfield rail crossing
WEST SPRINGFIELD ― Railroad company CSX has agreed to fund major safety upgrades at the Memorial Avenue rail crossing in West Springfield — a site where trains carrying propane have relied on flares and manual traffic control to cross four lanes of traffic. The upgrades follow sustained pressure from local and state officials, rail workers, and union leaders who flagged the crossing's outdated safety measures as a growing threat, said Trevor Wood, West Springfield's public works director, in a press release. According to Woods, local rail workers and Local 352 of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers have raised concerns about the lack of safety infrastructure at the Memorial Avenue crossing. 'These outdated and dangerous procedures, paired with limited signage and no physical barriers, led to numerous close calls and a growing sense of urgency,' Woods said in the statement. The project will add brighter red flashing lights, early warning signals for motorists and new fencing. Construction will start this fall after The Big E ends, with signal work planned for spring 2026. The whole project should be finished by the end of next year, the statement said. These changes are a step forward for keeping residents, workers and visitors safe, Mayor William Reichelt said in a statement Wednesday. 'Together with the MassDOT overhaul of Memorial Avenue, this project will transform the entire corridor and deliver long-term safety and traffic benefits for West Springfield,' Reichelt said. more news from Western Massachusetts Demolition to begin at vacant Mary Lane Hospital campus in Ware Maine man pleads guilty in decades-old rape case, sentenced to 12-15 years Hampden county communities to see major state investment in transportation projects 'I see people holding back,' but retailers hope for tax-free boost this weekend Now-closed UMass marmoset lab euthanized its colony of monkeys Read the original article on MassLive. EFL clash could be postponed over safety fears as club ‘refuse to provide reassurances to fans'
SWINDON TOWN'S home season opener against Cambridge United on Saturday is in jeopardy after it was claimed that their County Ground home needs £250,000 worth of safety upgrades. Ian Holloway 's side have remained bullish throughout that their 15,728-capacity will ready for Saturday's match. 2 But Town fan group Spirit of 69 believe that significant work needs to be done following "neglect". A statement read: "After three years of total neglect and a recent lack of investment and upkeep, Swindon Borough Council's Event Safety Advisory Group have identified critical stadium safety upgrades that will cost £250,000 to remedy, including emergency vehicle access." Local council leader Jim Robbins said: "We want the match on Saturday to go ahead, and for the fans to be able to enjoy the first home game of the season against Cambridge United. "A multi-agency safety advisory group provides independent advice and sports grounds safety certificates, so events can take place safely in line with legal requirements. "Swindon Town Football Club are currently implementing the recommendations provided by the Advisory Group after a full audit of the ground and its safety arrangements was carried out in June by the Council and the club are in regular contact with our team. "There will be a further meeting ahead of the game this weekend to ensure all of the compliance work has been fully completed." Swindon claimed in a statement given to the BBC: "All required work is either completed or on course to be finalised." The County Ground did not host a single pre-season friendly. The last match to take place there was a 0-0 draw with MK Dons on May 3. Swindon began their League Two campaign by losing 2-1 at Walsall last Saturday. 'Who the hell do you think you are- - Ex-Premier League boss fumes at his own fans who threw CHAIR at opposition player Holloway's men fell to a 91st minute winner, despite their opponents having been down to 10 men for most of the contest. After the match, the Swindon boss blasted a Town fan who allegedly threw a chair towards Walsall goalkeeper Myles Roberts. Holloway, 62, fumed: "Whoever you are, you should be ashamed of yourself. I am going to hunt you down and find you." Following Saturday's scheduled home opener, Swindon will travel to Cardiff City for a League Cup first round clash. 2
