Los Alegres del Barranco Cancel Show in Michoacán for ‘Security Concerns'
Mexican band Los Alegres del Barranco canceled their scheduled performance on Friday (May 30) in the municipality of Maravatío, in the Mexican state of Michoacán, citing security concerns, the group's spokesperson, Luis Alvarado, confirmed to Billboard Español. 'In agreement with the event sponsor, local authorities, state security agencies, and members of the band, it was decided to postpone the event due to security concerns,' Alvarado said in a brief statement, without providing further details about the postponement or a new date for the performance. Pride Concert Canceled a Day After Boston Show Is Called Off Niko McKnight, Brian McKnight's Estranged Son, Dies at 32 After Cancer Battle Previously, the event's sponsor, Chilangos Grill, had announced on Thursday (May 29) that the show would be rescheduled 'for reasons beyond the control of the company and the band.' Organizers reported that the concert was sold out. 'Our priority has always been and will continue to be the well-being and safety of our audience, artists, and everyone involved with the company, which is why a new date for the performance will be scheduled,' read the statement on social media. The group had recently secured a legal injunction allowing them to perform narcocorridos in Michoacán, despite a state decree that prohibits the dissemination of music or expressions that glorify crime in public spaces, which went into effect in April. Los Alegres del Barranco became the first act from the regional Mexican genre to be formally accused by the Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office of alleged glorification of criminal activities. Authorities in that state, located in western Mexico, are investigating the group after images of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias 'El Mencho,' leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), were projected during their performance of the song 'El del Palenque' on March 29 at an auditorium at the University of Guadalajara. This incident even led the U.S. to revoke work and tourist visas for the band members, as announced on April 1 by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau in a statement on X. The band, its representative, and the promoter are facing investigation from the Jalisco Prosecutor's Office for four performances in different municipalities of that state in which they allegedly glorified criminal activities, according to information published on May 9 by the same office. Ten out of Mexico's 32 states have implemented various bans against narcocorridos or any expression that promotes or glorifies criminal activities, though such bans have not yet become federal law. The cancellation of Los Alegres del Barranco's concert also comes after five members of Grupo Fugitivo — a locally known regional Mexican music group — were found dead in the state of Tamaulipas on May 29, four days after being reported missing. The deaths are allegedly linked to a faction of a drug cartel operating in that region of the country. Argentina arrests 12 suspects linked to Tren de Aragua gang
BUENOS AIRES, May 29 (Reuters) - Argentina's security minister said on Thursday that 12 suspects were arrested for criminal acts linked to the Tren de Aragua gang, a group that the country classifies as a terrorist organization. "It is a highly dangerous gang and today 12 of its members are in prison", Security Minister Patricia Bullrich said in a press conference in Buenos Aires. Bullrich also said the group had carried out attacks on supermarkets, butcher shops, hardware stores using firearms and explosives and caused fatalities. The U.S. State Department designated the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua as a global terrorist organization in February saying it posed a threat to U.S. national security, foreign policy and economic interests. Meanwhile, Venezuelan government has maintained that the gang, with prison origins, was destroyed during raids in 2023 and no longer exists.

At least 4 people involved in killing of Mexico City mayor's senior aides, police say
MEXICO CITY (AP) — At least four people were involved in the killing of the personal secretary and a close adviser of Mexico City 's Mayor Clara Brugada, the capital's police chief said Wednesday, as more details emerged of the worst attack against public officials in the capital in recent years. Pablo Vázquez Camacho said investigators had identified and found a motorcycle and two other vehicles used in the escape of the gunman who killed the two officials Tuesday morning as they travelled in a vehicle along a busy thoroughfare. Brugada's personal secretary, Ximena Guzmán, and an adviser, José Muñoz, were shot dead in Guzmán's car, authorities said. Mexico City chief prosecutor Bertha Alcalde Luján said the gunman had fled on a motorcycle that was hidden nearby and then changed vehicles twice as he and others fled into neighboring Mexico State. Clothes were recovered in the vehicles and were being analyzed, but investigators could not yet offer a possible motive, the prosecutor said. She said Guzmán was shot eight times and Muñoz four times. The attack, which happened at around 7 a.m., left four bullet holes clustered on the driver's side of the windshield. One body lay on the pavement. President Claudia Sheinbaum, who is an ally of Brugada and a former mayor of Mexico City before winning the presidency last year, had declined to speculate on the possible involvement of organized crime during her press briefing earlier Wednesday.

Mexico City mayor's aides shot dead in ‘contract killing'
Two aides to the mayor of Mexico City have been murdered in broad daylight in what appears to have been a contract killing in the heart of the capital. Ximena Guzmán, the personal secretary to Clara Brugada, and José Muñoz, her political adviser, were both killed shortly after Guzmán had pulled up near a metro stop in the Moderna neighbourhood, apparently to give a lift to her colleague. Security camera footage showed a gunman standing on the street, wearing a white T-shirt and a motorcycle helmet, firing several shots at Guzmán inside the car before turning his weapon on Muñoz as Muñoz tried to escape. Both victims died at the scene. The car drove on for a few metres with Guzmán slumped at the wheel

Personal secretary and adviser to Mexico City's mayor killed in attack
The personal secretary and an adviser to Mexico City's mayor were killed by gunmen on a motorcycle in a central neighbourhood of the capital Tuesday, authorities said. Mayor Clara Brugada holds the second most powerful political post in the country to President Claudia Sheinbaum, and they are allies in the Morena party. Brugada said in a statement that her secretary Ximena Guzman and adviser Jose Munoz were killed in the Moderna neighbourhood. The motive was under investigation. The attack happened at around 7:30 a.m. local time when Munoz and Guzman were driving with Munoz behind the wheel of a black Audi SUV. Two gunmen aboard a motorcycle fired several times at Munoz. There were four bullet holes clustered on the driver's side of the windshield. When Guzman tried to flee the vehicle she was shot and her body lay on the pavement, local media reported, citing police sources. Sheinbaum lamented the killings and said during her morning press briefing that there would not be impunity. Sheinbaum said that she was not aware of threats against Guzman and said she did not have a security detail. Sheinbaum served as Mexico City's mayor prior to winning the presidency last year. In 2020, gunmen from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel attempted to kill her then police chief in a spectacular ambush on a central boulevard. He was wounded and three people were killed. Homicides were up slightly in Mexico's capital during the first quarter of this year compared with the same period last year.
