6.1-magnitude quake hits off Greek island of Crete
The Aegean Sea, located where the African and Anatolian tectonic plates converge, is often hit by quakes. (AP pic) ATHENS : A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit off the Greek islands of Crete and Santorini today, the US Geological Survey said. The strong quake struck 82km northeast of Crete's capital Heraklion, at a depth of 68km, the USGS said. The region popular with tourists has been rattled by multiple tremors in recent months, prompting schools in Santorini and neighbouring islands to close temporarily. Thousands of earthquakes, mainly of low magnitude, were recorded from late January between the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Ios and Anafi in the Cyclades group southeast of the Greek mainland. The seismic swarm caused no casualties or significant damage. Located where the African and Anatolian tectonic plates converge, the Aegean Sea is often hit by quakes. But the region had not experienced a phenomenon of such magnitude since records began in 1964, experts said.

Earthquake of 4.2 magnitude strikes Myanmar
Naypyitaw: An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 jolted Myanmar on Friday, a statement by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said. As per the NCS, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10km, making it susceptible to aftershocks. In a post on X, the NCS said, "EQ of M: 4.2, On: 30/05/2025 13:13:28 IST, Lat: 20.78 N, Long: 97.00 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Myanmar." Earlier on Thursday, an earthquake of 4.5 magnitude struck the region, as per the NCS. In a post on X, the NCS said, "EQ of M: 4.5, On: 29/05/2025 05:32:05 IST, Lat: 23.14 N, Long: 94.46 E, Depth: 85 Km, Location: Myanmar." Shallow earthquakes are generally more dangerous than deep earthquakes. This is because the seismic waves from shallow earthquakes have a shorter distance to travel to the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking and potentially more damage to structures and greater casualties. In the aftermath of the magnitude 7.7 and 6.4 earthquakes that struck central Myanmar on March 28, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned of a series of rapidly rising health threats for tens of thousands of displaced people in earthquake-affected areas: tuberculosis (TB), HIV, vector- and water-borne diseases. More than 3.5 million people in Myanmar were already displaced before the earthquakes. Tens of thousands are now homeless, according to the WHO South East Asia statement. Although Myanmar is an earthquake-prone country, there has not been proposed an official national seismic hazard map. Myanmar is vulnerable to hazards from moderate and large magnitude earthquakes, including tsunami hazards along its long coastline. The Sagaing Fault elevates the seismic hazard for Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, and Yangon, which together represent 46 per cent of the population of Myanmar. Although Yangon is relatively far from the fault trace, it still suffers from significant risk due to its dense population. For instance, in 1903, an intense earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 that occurred in Bago also struck Yangon.

4.4-magnitude earthquake strikes Pakistan on Thursday
An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 on Richter scale struck Pakistan on Thursday, as per National Center of Seismology (NCS). The earthquake occurred at 16:06 hours IST (Indian Standard Time) at a depth of 10 kilometers. "EQ of M: 4.4, On: 29/05/2025 16:06:56 IST, Lat: 30.14 N, Long: 70.36 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Pakistan," the NCS shared on X. Earlier, an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on the Richter Scale jolted Pakistan on Tuesday, the NCS said. As per the NCS, the earthquake occurred at 7:20 pm (IST) at latitude 31.31 N, and longitude 72.52 E. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 111 kilometers. In a statement shared on X, the NCS stated, "EQ of M: 4.2, On: 27/05/2025 19:20:39 IST, Lat: 31.31 N, Long: 72.52 E, Depth: 111 Km, Location: Pakistan." Tremors in southern Iran Earlier on Thursday, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake was recorded in southern Iran by the National Seismic Network stations of the National Centre of Meteorology. The earthquake was recorded at 1:30am UAE local time on May 29. The centre confirmed that the earthquake was not felt in the UAE and had no impact on the country.
