Earthquake of 4.2 magnitude strikes Myanmar
As per the NCS, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10km, making it susceptible to aftershocks.

Earlier on Thursday, an earthquake of 4.5 magnitude struck the region, as per the NCS.
In a post on X, the NCS said, "EQ of M: 4.5, On: 29/05/2025 05:32:05 IST, Lat: 23.14 N, Long: 94.46 E, Depth: 85 Km, Location: Myanmar."

Shallow earthquakes are generally more dangerous than deep earthquakes. This is because the seismic waves from shallow earthquakes have a shorter distance to travel to the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking and potentially more damage to structures and greater casualties.
In the aftermath of the magnitude 7.7 and 6.4 earthquakes that struck central Myanmar on March 28, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned of a series of rapidly rising health threats for tens of thousands of displaced people in earthquake-affected areas: tuberculosis (TB), HIV, vector- and water-borne diseases.
More than 3.5 million people in Myanmar were already displaced before the earthquakes. Tens of thousands are now homeless, according to the WHO South East Asia statement.
Although Myanmar is an earthquake-prone country, there has not been proposed an official national seismic hazard map.
Myanmar is vulnerable to hazards from moderate and large magnitude earthquakes, including tsunami hazards along its long coastline.
The Sagaing Fault elevates the seismic hazard for Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, and Yangon, which together represent 46 per cent of the population of Myanmar. Although Yangon is relatively far from the fault trace, it still suffers from significant risk due to its dense population. For instance, in 1903, an intense earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 that occurred in Bago also struck Yangon.

Gaza: The UAE, in cooperation with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the Gaza Strip, has delivered a shipment of medicines and medical supplies to the health sector, as part of Operation Chivalrous Knight 3. The aid will be distributed to hospitals and medical facilities to help address acute shortages and strengthen their ability to respond to emergencies. Among the recipients was Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, which received several truckloads carrying essential medicines and critical supplies. The delivery aims to boost the hospital's capacity to handle urgent cases at a time when it is facing severe shortages of medicines and equipment. Sharif Al-Nayrab, Media Director for Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 in Gaza, reaffirmed that the UAE continues to provide medical aid and pharmaceuticals to the Gaza Strip under the initiative to prevent the collapse of the healthcare system and alleviate the suffering of hospitals and patients. Heba Alnajjar, Emergency medical teams (EMT) coordinator at WHO, stated that the organisation delivered the shipment to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, containing all essential and currently unavailable medicines in Gaza's health facilities. She expressed hope for continued cooperation and the entry of more UAE aid to support the health sector. Ibrahim Al-Farra, Director of the Palestinian Aid Delivering Committee at the Ministry of Health in Gaza, described the UAE's assistance as a "lifeline" for all patients, noting that the continued supply of medicines and medical equipment revitalises hospitals and helps save the lives of the sick and wounded. The delivery is part of an ongoing series of aid shipments scheduled for the coming period, as part of the UAE's sustained efforts through Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 to ease the health crisis in Gaza and ensure the continuity of medical services.

WHO demands more aid in devastated Gaza
GENEVA: The UN health agency on Tuesday said Israel should let it stock medical supplies to deal with a "catastrophic" health situation in Gaza before it seizes control of Gaza City. Israel has said its military would "take control" of Gaza City in a plan approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet that sparked a wave of global criticism. "We want to stock up and we all hear about 'more humanitarian supplies are allowed in' — well it's not happening yet, or it's happening at a way too low a pace", said Rik Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization's representative in the Palestinian territories. Fifty-two per cent of medicines were running at zero stock, Peeperkorn said, speaking from Jerusalem. UN agencies warned last month that famine was unfolding in Gaza, with Israel severely restricting aid entry. Peeperkorn said the WHO was able to bring in fewer supplies than it wanted "due to the cumbersome procedures" and products "still denied" entry — a topic of constant negotiation with the Israeli authorities. "We want to as quickly stock up hospitals... following the news — the whole discussion about an incursion in Gaza", he said. "We currently cannot do that... We need to be able to get all essential medicines and medical supplies in". Peeperkorn said only 50 per cent of hospitals and 38 per cent of primary health care centres were functioning and that too partially. Bed occupancy has reached 240 per cent capacity in the Al Shifa hospital and 300 per cent Al Ahli Hospital in northern Gaza. "The overall health situation remains catastrophic", he said. "Hunger and malnutrition continue to ravage Gaza". Peeperkorn said 148 people died from the effects of malnutrition this year, citing August 5 as the cut-off date. Nearly 12,000 children aged under five were identified to be suffering from acute malnutrition in July — the highest monthly figure recorded to date in Gaza, Peeperkorn said. These include 2,562 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition, of whom 40 were hospitalised at stabilisation centres. Meanwhile, Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli air strikes on Gaza City have intensified in recent days, following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet approving plans to expand the war there. The Israeli government has not provided an exact timetable on when its forces would enter the area, but according to the civil defence agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal, air strikes on Gaza City have been increasing for the past three days. Bassal said the residential neighbourhoods of Zeitoun and Sabra have been hit "with very heavy air strikes targeting civilian homes, possibly including high-rise buildings". "For the third consecutive day, the Israeli occupation is intensifying its bombardment", said the spokesman. "The Israeli occupation is using all types of weapons in that area — bombs, drones and also highly explosive munitions that cause massive destruction to civilian homes", he added. Bassal said that at least 24 people had been killed across Gaza on Tuesday, including several casualties caused by strikes on Gaza City. "The bombardment has been extremely intense for the past two days. With every strike, the ground shakes. There are martyrs under the rubble that no one can reach because the shelling hasn't stopped", said Majed al Hosary, a resident in Zeitoun. Israel has faced mounting criticism over the 22-month-long war with Hamas, with United Nations-backed experts warning of widespread famine unfolding in besieged Gaza. Netanyahu is under mounting pressure to secure the release of the remaining hostages, as well as over his plans to expand the war, which he has vowed to do with or without the backing of Israel's allies. Philippines accelerates TB elimination drive with India's community-based screening devices
New Delhi: The Philippines, one of the top five countries with the highest tuberculosis (TB) burden, faces the challenge of detecting and treating an estimated 1,90,000 missed TB cases each year, an official statement said. In line with the United Nations target to find and treat 2.1 million Tuberculosis cases in the country by 2027, the Philippines' Health Department is stepping up its commitment to strengthen community-level screening and diagnosis through India-made innovative Truenat® systems and ultra-portable X-ray devices. Currently, there are 68 Truenat® devices deployed across the Philippines, enabling rapid, multi-disease molecular testing for TB, HIV, HPV, Hepatitis B & C, and more. A pilot in the Bantayan Islands demonstrated the transformative potential of the platform, achieving a remarkable 1008% increase in TB case detection, as per the statement. Molbio's WHO-endorsed and ICMR-approved solutions for TB detection address critical barriers in the Philippines, such as geographic isolation, underutilization of laboratory testing, and limited access in rural and island communities. The recent approval of the PRORAD Atlas Ultraportable X-ray by the Philippines FDA paves the way for integrated, end-to-end TB screening and diagnosis, ensuring immediate linkage to treatment.
