I look back on the Lions tour and feel a little bit underwhelmed, but however it was viewed by those of us watching, those on the tour will see it as a massive success. There will have been a momentary pause after the third Test and disappointment at not securing the 3-0 whitewash but that will have dissipated pretty quickly. This group of Lions have earned their staus as series winners — a status held by a minority of Lions as there are far more unsuccessful tours than successful ones. Often, your first experience of the Lions is in childhood so perhaps we look back on Lions series with the rose-tinted glasses of youth — although not the one I was on in 2005! Both the anticipation for them and recollection of them is often more memorable than what they actually produce.

By the time the sun returns and the players are relaxing on Bondi Beach on Monday afternoon, the Lions will look back on this tour with a feeling of pride. By then, the lightning storms will have passed. History will remember the class of 2025 as series winners but there will forever be a nagging feeling that they did not finish the job. It was a good outcome, two Tests to one, but not one that will propel them into the pantheon of greatness.
