EU ministers seal fresh sanctions package against Russia

EU foreign ministers on Tuesday approved a 17th round of sanctions against Russia over the Kremlin's ongoing war against Ukraine. The package doubles the number of banned ships in Russia's so-called shadow fleet, the ill-maintained flock of oil and gas tankers that Moscow uses to circumvent a maximum oil price agreed on by the West. 'While Putin feigns interest in peace, more sanctions are in the works. Russia's actions and those who enable Russia face severe consequences,' the EU's top diplomat Kaja Kallas said in a statement. Advertisement Aside from the shadow fleet, the EU also put restrictions on a Russian oil company and a shipping business. EU entrepreneurs are also forbidden to do business with more than 45 entities and individuals in the military industry. A Chinese state-owned company was added to the same list, along with two others from that country.

Hijack call from ship off Iran a false alarm: Security firm Ambrey

A hijack signal sent from a Panama-flagged petroleum products tanker off Iran was a false alarm, British maritime security firm Ambrey said on Wednesday. Ambrey first reported the incident south of the busy Strait of Hormuz shipping lane on Tuesday without naming the vessel. It said it took place some 51 nautical miles northwest of the Iranian port of Bandar-e Jask. It dubbed the incident a 'false hijack distress call' on Wednesday, adding that it 'understands that the vessel had previously conducted similar actions.' Ambrey said it believed the vessel was part of a 'shadow fleet' of tankers used by Iran, noting a sister ship was on a sanctions list issued by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Aging, stealthy, suspected of sabotage: What to know about Russia's ‘shadow fleet'

The European Union and Britain adopted new sanctions against Russia's 'shadow fleet' on Tuesday, in a bid to cut off a source of funding for Russia's war in Ukraine. Relief from Western sanctions is a goal of Russian President Vladimir Putin's in negotiating an end to the war. The latest crackdown, which the E.U. describes as its 'largest ever package targeting Putin's shadow fleet,' is designed to increase pressure on Putin to commit to a ceasefire by cutting off the funding for the Kremlin's war machine.

EU Expands Sanctions on Russia After Trump Call

The European Union has approved its latest sanctions package against Russia, targeting nearly 200 shadow fleet ships as well as addressing hybrid threats and human rights, the bloc's top diplomat Kaja Kallas announced on Tuesday. The package includes measures targeting dozens of individuals, entities and vessels behind Russia's shadow fleet of oil tankers, which has helped Moscow skirt the bloc's trade and energy sanctions.
