Apple iPhone 17 Air: Latest Leak Promises Welcome Design Upgrade

One of the four iPhones expected to debut in September has caught the imagination: the slim model which might be called the iPhone 17 Air. A new report claims to show the battery, and it brings potentially good news. The new phone is rumored to be as slim as 5.5mm, excluding the camera bump. Could, some have wondered, this exotic design be its Achilles' heel, with too little space inside for a useful battery? The latest report from serial leaker Majin Bu suggests the battery could have a bigger capacity than was previously expected. Using images supplied by a source of what's said to be the battery, the report estimates the capacity at 2,900mAh, which is bigger than the 2,800mAh previously thought. Bigger, then, but still not huge. Even so, every little helps with battery life, so this is good news. The images show that 'Apple has chosen a steel case for the battery, a decision that follows the introduction of this technology on the iPhone 16 Pro, where the steel case enhanced heat dissipation and battery density,' the report claims. Those who remember that there was a hiccup when the iPhone 15 Pro was released which seemed to suggest heat was causing the battery to perform less well may remember that the switch to a steel case for the next model was greatly welcomed. Majin Bu says this kind of case also offers higher structural resistance. Additionally, 'the steel case, successfully implemented on the iPhone 16 Pro, integrates seamlessly with the L-shaped design, fitting the reduced logic board of the iPhone 17 Air,' the report goes on. Other reports have suggested that iOS 26 will include features to improve battery life, including an Adaptive Power mode. This and what is hoped will be a more efficient processor in the new, slim phone may be enough to overcome fears of an under-performing phone. Even so, you can be sure that when it is released, especially as the iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to have a thicker-than-ever profile to feature an increased battery size, all eyes will be on how long the iPhone 17 Air lasts each day.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Edge rumor teases the best of both worlds

Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR The next Galaxy Edge phone is rumored to be even thinner than its predecessor. The rumor also suggests that the device may have a larger battery. To achieve this feat, Samsung may use 'new battery material technology.' The Galaxy S25 Edge stands out from the rest of the Galaxy S25 line due to its slim and light design. However, to achieve this slender frame, Samsung had to make a number of sacrifices, which may have played a hand in its poor sales numbers. Despite selling fewer than expected units, it seems the device may still get a successor. That successor may fix the Edge's biggest flaw. Reputable leaker Ice Universe shared some details about the Galaxy S26 Edge on X (formerly Twitter) today. According to the tipster, Samsung intends to make the Galaxy S26 Edge even thinner than the Galaxy S25 Edge. That would be an impressive feat considering how thin the Galaxy S25 Edge already is at 5.8mm. However, this rumor mentions something that would be even more impressive than shaving off some millimeters. One of the biggest complaints about the Edge is the battery. Due to its thin build, it contains a measly 3,900mAh battery, which is 100mAh less than the battery on the vanilla Galaxy S25. Despite Samsung wanting to go thinner with the Galaxy S26 Edge, Ice Universe claims the next Edge will have a larger battery. How will Samsung accomplish putting a larger battery in a smaller body? The tipster says Samsung will use 'new battery material technology.' The Galaxy S25 Edge uses a lithium-ion battery like the rest of the S25 family. By new battery technology, the leaker could be referring to silicon-carbon, which could allow the company to squeeze in more capacity. If this rumor turns out to be true, it could make the Galaxy S26 Edge a more appealing device. Would a bigger battery be enough to sell you on a Galaxy S26 Edge? With Samsung's tri-fold on the horizon, TECNO unveils its own 'G-style' concept phone

TECNO TL;DR TECNO has unveiled the Phantom Ultimate G Fold Concept, a slim, inward-folding tri-fold phone that will be showcased at MWC 2026. It features a 9.94-inch display, dual-hinge 'G-style' fold, and measures just 11.49mm when closed. The design rivals the upcoming tri-fold from Samsung but remains a concept for now. Two of the hot topics of 2025 regarding foldable phones are slimmer builds and the triple-fold design. TECNO's latest concept phone hits both of these talking points, and we're here for it. The company has just unveiled the PHANTOM Ultimate G Fold Concept, a new tri-fold smartphone with an inward-folding design that TECNO claims is the world's thinnest tri-fold form factor. The concept device is expected to be showcased at MWC 2026. We know that 'tri-fold' is a slightly misleading way to refer to these three-panel devices, but the tech world seems to be running with it. According to the press release, the phone features a dual-hinge 'G-style' system that allows the 9.94-inch flexible display to fold inward twice, fully enclosing the screen when not in use. This approach protects the display from scratches and bumps, while a separate cover screen handles more typical smartphone tasks. The idea of a G-shaped fold isn't entirely unexplored. Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy G Fold later this year with a similar inward-folding structure. While we don't yet know how thick Samsung's device will be, TECNO is highlighting compactness as a key differentiator from existing foldables. When folded, the PHANTOM Ultimate G Fold Concept measures just 11.49mm thick — comparable to many current dual-panel devices — and only 3.49mm when unfolded. This is thinner than the HUAWEI Mate XT, which opted for a bulkier S-style configuration that includes an outward fold, leaving part of the screen exposed. TECNO TECNO's design combines a small waterdrop hinge and a larger main hinge to enable gapless folding and multi-angle hovering. That means the phone can be partially propped open like a mini laptop or workstation — a feature familiar to Galaxy Z Fold users but now applied to a larger three-panel display. Despite its complex folding mechanism, TECNO says the PHANTOM Ultimate G Fold Concept still includes flagship-tier features, such as a high-performance chipset, a triple-camera setup, and a battery exceeding 5,000mAh. The company also highlights its use of ultra-high-strength steel for the hinge and a 0.3mm Titan Fiber back cover to keep the weight and thickness in check. This isn't TECNO's first foray into experimental designs. The company previously showed off another tri-fold concept, the PHANTOM ULTIMATE 2, during MWC 2025. While there's no word yet on whether the G Fold Concept will be released commercially, it underlines TECNO's growing interest in pushing foldable form factors. Got a tip? Talk to us! My First Day With the Galaxy Z Fold 7: This Foldable Finally Feels Just Right to Me

There's something slightly ironic about the super-slim Galaxy Z Fold 7. Because the generous 6.5-inch cover screen feels much more normal than previous versions of Samsung's foldable, I've hardly bothered opening the phone to use the sprawling inside display — despite that kind of being the whole point. That's not a bad thing. Rather, it's a testament to how Samsung has managed to make both displays practical and useful. The cover screen no longer feels like an awkward compromise. Instead, it feels wonderfully ordinary. That's largely due to how much Samsung slimmed down its latest book-style foldable. The Z Fold 7 is just 8.9mm thick when closed and 4.2mm thick when open. It also weighs a mere 215 grams, which is impressive for a book-style foldable. It joins the ranks of other skinny foldables like the Oppo Find N5, Huawei Mate X6 and the Honor Magic V3 — and outslims them by a hair. The cover screen feels like just the right size this time around. Numi Prasarn/CNET During my first day with the Z Fold 7, I've used the cover screen to do everything from navigating New York City to snapping photos and posting them to Instagram. I've opted for the internal screen when watching videos or multitasking, like checking my email while surfing the web or streaming music. I like that using the bigger screen now feels more like a choice than a necessity. Scaling back on compromises Just a month and a half ago, Samsung launched the S25 Edge, which also boasts a slim profile, albeit one that's slightly thicker than the Z Fold 7's, at 5.8mm. That phone essentially set the stage for the Z Fold 7, and I'm surprised how quickly I got used to both phones' feather-light form factors. It's hard to go back to anything else. Like the S25 Edge, the Z Fold 7 has a sturdiness that keeps it from feeling like it's going to bend in my hand. It sports a Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 cover and a Victus 2 backing, which gives me some peace of mind, as I refuse to slap on a case and add any additional bulk. I trekked New York's concrete jungle and tossed the phone in my bag without worrying too much about durability. I hope that confidence is well-placed in the long run. The Z Fold 7's thinness helps it feel wonderfully ordinary when closed. Numi Prasarn/CNET Something else Samsung's two skinny phones have in common is a 200-megapixel main camera, like the one you'll find on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. The Z Fold 7 also has a 12-megapixel ultrawide and 10-megapixel telephoto camera, along with 10-megapixel selfie cameras. This results in some beautifully vivid shots, with balanced colors in both light and dark settings. Here are a few of my favorites: My colleague Tara Brown strikes a pose at Samsung's Unpacked Night. I love how crisp this portrait shot is. (You can even see the food on the table in full focus!) Abrar Al-Heeti/CNET Snapped a selfie with CNET's Tara Brown and Vanessa Hand Orellana using the cover screen camera. Not too shabby! Abrar Al-Heeti/CNET I swung by The Morgan Library in New York to see how the phone would photograph darker, more textured settings. I'm quite pleased with the warmth and detail in this one. Abrar Al-Heeti/CNET The camera really ate with this one. This was snapped using Food mode. Abrar Al-Heeti/CNET The colorful contrast of the flowers against the dark New York sky is pleasingly punchy. Abrar Al-Heeti/CNET The tradeoff to getting nice images is the camera bump is pretty noticeable, therefore detracting a bit from that overall slim design. But that's a compromise I'm willing to make. The camera bump on the Z Fold 7 isn't very subtle, but that's the cost of getting three solid cameras. Joseph Maldonado/CNET/PCMag Unlike the S25 Edge, which sports a mere 3,900 mAh battery, the Z Fold 7 thankfully doesn't compromise on battery capacity. It maintains the 4,400 mAh from last year's Z Fold 6, which means I went about my day without pondering how long my phone would last. After 6 hours of regular use, the battery went from full to a solid 70%, before I put the phone aside for my flight back to San Francisco. I look forward to running more thorough battery tests once I've had more time with the Z Fold 7. Multitasking is where the inside screen really shines. Numi Prasarn/CNET A clear use case The Galaxy S25 Edge is a cool phone, but without much of an obvious selling point, beyond the neatness factor. The Galaxy Z Fold 7, on the other hand, presents a more enticing pitch: You essentially get a phone and tablet in one, without the clunkiness of a hybrid device. But scaling back a phone's size does the opposite to its price tag. The Z Fold 7 costs a whopping $2,000. That follows the pattern of $100 price hikes over the last couple of years; the Z Fold 6 cost $1,900, and the Z Fold 5 was $1,800. Anyone eyeing this year's foldable will have to decide if they're willing to buy a slimmer phone, even if it means a much slimmer wallet. So far though, the Z Fold 7 is doing a decent job proving its worth, even if that price tag seems inflated. I'll just need to remind myself every now and then to take advantage of the full real estate on board.
