Plans for new craft beer shop given go-ahead despite fears of anti-social behaviour

Proposals to open a small store serving craft beer have been granted by the city council's licensing board despite concerns it could lead to anti-social behaviour. The Pursuit of Hoppyness, which will be situated at 274 High Street, has now been granted an on and off sales licence and will offer a number of extra wellness events, including book readings and charity nights. But concerns were heard from local resident Chris Carrigan, who objected to the plans on the grounds they would increase footfall and traffic in the area and that could lead to more anti-social behaviour. Mr Carrigan said: 'There are already security concerns and how this will affect the footfall in the area. 'There are concerns over potential impacts on nearby property as the increase of alcohol provision may impact property value.' Representative for the licensing application, Brian McMann, reassured members of the board that The Pursuit of Hoppyness is a small premises running acoustic events for a maximum capacity of six people. Mr McMann said: 'None of these events suggest that this will lead it to be a particularly riotous place or suggest that it is going to increase footfall in the area.' Questions were then asked by the board about the evidence the objector had collected that backed up his claims. Councillor Alex Wilson asked: 'Mr Carrigan, you mention this license would lead to an increased consumption of alcohol, which would in turn lead to increased antisocial behaviour. Do you have any direct correlation with the premises? Mr Carrigan said: 'No, I do not as the premise is not open yet. I cannot give evidence but this objection is a preventative measure.' Councillor Wilson then asked Mr McMann: 'What measures will be put in place to prevent litter and keep the surrounding areas tidy?' It was confirmed that the company would sweep in the mornings and a contractor is in place to do this.
