Don't expect Minnesota's "Summer Glory Index" to be high in 2025, climatologist says

The Summer Glory Index rates how great Minnesota's summer days are based on high and low temperatures and rain. There have been numerous heat waves this summer in the Twin Cities, plus a lot of humidity, severe storms and, of course, all the smoke. Kenny Blumenfeld, a climatologist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, tracks these sorts of things. "Twenty-twenty-one, 2023 and this year are all kind of high in terms of the number of smoky days," Blumenfeld said. "So this is an unusually smoky summer, even in the context of the recent decade or so." Blumenfeld is also in charge of the Summer Glory Index, which gives the perfect summer day a score of 40. "So a 40-point day is one where the high temperatures in the 70s, low temperatures upper 50s to low 60s, the dew point temperature stays below 60 degrees and it doesn't rain," he said. He says records dating back to the 1900s don't keep track of smoke, so he can't factor that into the index, which would obviously really take the score down. But even without it, this summer has been below average. "So for the season so far, we're up a little over 1,000 points. So that puts us kind of in the lower third of recent summers," he said. When it comes to the rain though, some Minnesotans are fans. "This is the first time that I can remember, and I've lived out at my home for 15 years, that my grass wasn't brown," said Susan Gulbrandson. "In July, I had green grass."

Edmonton weather: Warm and smoky today, with showers coming tomorrow

According to CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel's forecast, it'll be very smoky today but less so tomorrow. An air quality warning went into effect for the Edmonton region Tuesday evening and it will likely remain in place throughout today. We're expecting some improvement in air quality as the day goes on. But, we'll probably stay in the high risk range for much of the day, possibly dropping to a moderate risk later this afternoon and evening. The Environment and Climate Change Canada air quality is reading 10+ (very high risk) this morning, however the Alberta AQHI is reading 6-9 across the Edmonton region. Bottom line: There will be wildfire smoke in the area throughout the day, to varying degrees and with an expected improvement as the day goes on. Tomorrow's smoke forecast is a little more uncertain due to the chance of rain. We have a system moving into southwest Alberta tonight with some showers and a risk of thunderstorms for that area. The precipitation will drive north into the Edmonton region by Thursday morning and although there's some uncertainty with how much precipitation we'll actually get in the city, expect showers and possibly some periods of rain in the area through the day Thursday. More showers are likely for Friday, with a risk of some thunderstorms developing in the evening. Temperatures will climb into the low 20s again today. However, we'll see daytime highs slip into the mid to upper teens for Thursday-Saturday in the city. Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Mix of sun & cloud & Smoky/Hazy. High: 22 Tonight - Increasing cloud overnight. Hazy. 9pm: 18 Thursday - Cloudy with showers. Occasional periods of steadier rain. Morning Low: 13 Afternoon High: 18 Friday - Cloudy. 60% chance of showers. Risk of a thunderstorm in the evening. Morning Low: 12 Afternoon High: 19 Saturday - Partly cloudy. Morning Low: 12 Afternoon High: 19 Sunday - Mix of sun & cloud. 30% chance of showers (especially later in the day). Morning Low: 10 Afternoon High: 20 Monday - Mix of sun & cloud. Morning Low: 11 Afternoon High: 22
