QuantumScape shares have soared again this week -- up by 37.1% on the week as of noon ET Friday, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. Over the last month, the stock has more than doubled. QuantumScape gave investors a nice surprise recently -- news that one of its most important 2025 goals has already been accomplished. The company's technology includes solid-state batteries with ceramic separators that should lead to safer, faster-charging, and more efficient batteries for EVs. Two weeks ago, QuantumScape announced the successful scale-up of its production capabilities. Its new generation Cobra process will speed up a key ceramic separator production step by approximately 25 times, using equipment that occupies a much smaller footprint than its previous Raptor production process. That puts QuantumScape on track to launch field testing next year with its automaker customers. Those include global giant Volkswagen, which holds a 17% stake in the battery maker, according to its annual report. QuantumScape's solid-state batteries could provide EVs with significantly better travel range on a single charge than currently used batteries, which would help eliminate the range anxiety that has kept many potential EV buyers from considering them. More than 20% of all cars sold globally in 2024 were EVs, according to the International Energy Agency. While that amounted to sales of more than 17 million EVs, it also shows there is still massive growth potential in the market for such vehicles. That's why investors have been getting so excited and piling into QuantumScape stock recently. Chinese automaker-backed firm unveils solid-state batteries with 136 Wh/lb energy density

The Anhui Anwa New Energy Technology, a company backed and partly owned by Chinese automaker Chery, has unveiled its first batch of solid-state battery samples in China. Established in June 2020, Anwa's equity share includes Chery New Energy, which holds a 9.89% stake and battery giant Gotion High-Tech which has a stake of 5.89%. On Friday, Anwa declared that its first batch of solid-state battery samples had completed production at its factory in China's Wuhu Economic and Technological Development Zone. As per domestic media reports, these engineering samples meet the new 'No Fire No Explosion' safety standard. While these first-generation solid-state cells offer an energy density of 136 watt-hours per pound, the company plans to scale up to gigawatt-hour-level production of next-generation batteries. In October 2024, Chery Group had revealed plans to launch solid-state battery production, an announcement which is now being seen to align with the initial packs having successfully rolled off Anwa's assembly line. Anwa's plant uses a fully integrated production line that combines eight processes, including automatic coating of positive and negative electrodes, electrode diaphragm compositing, and dynamic heat sealing. The line is over 115 feet long and operates at a speed of about 66 feet per minute. Its planned annual production capacity is 1.25 GWh. Laser slitting technology is used to reduce dust pollution. To improve efficiency and reduce costs, Anwa has introduced a five-step dry manufacturing process that lowers energy consumption by 20% and reduces fixed asset investment by 30%. This streamlined production method not only helps minimize environmental impact but also makes battery manufacturing more sustainable and cost-effective. Furthermore, the company plans to expand its facilities by establishing a 5 GWh solid-state battery research and development center at the site. Alongside this, Anwa will build a fully integrated automated production line to support large-scale manufacturing and accelerate innovation in solid-state battery technology. Having achieved an energy density of about 136 watt-hours per pound through its first-generation solid-state batteries, Anwa has already started trial production of second-generation battery packs which are expected to deliver an energy density of approximately 181 watt-hours per pound—marking a significant improvement over previous the model. By 2027, Anwa aims to begin mass production of its third-generation solid-state batteries, targeting an energy density of approximately 227 watt-hours per pound. This advancement signals a crucial step forward in battery technology, promising higher capacity and longer driving ranges for electric vehicles, while potentially lowering production costs. If successfully commercialized, the breakthrough could transform the EV market by enhancing vehicle performance and accelerating the shift toward cleaner transportation. Although no official announcements have been made about specific models equipped with these batteries, Chery's Exeed Exlantix ET electric crossover was recently spotted featuring 'All-solid-state battery' branding, suggesting it may be among the first to adopt Anwa's cutting-edge technology.

Huawei has filed a patent detailing a sulfide-based solid-state battery design with energy densities between 180 and 225 Wh/lb, roughly two to three times higher than today's typical electric vehicle batteries. While the Chinese tech giant does not manufacture its own branded vehicles, it works closely with automakers to integrate in-house advanced technologies into electric vehicle models, including smart systems and now potentially its battery innovations. By pursuing solid-state battery development, Huawei joins a growing list of global automakers and tech companies such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and BYD, all racing to unlock safer, lighter, and faster-charging batteries to transform the future of electric mobility. Huawei's patent application reveals that its battery uses a method of doping sulfide electrolytes with nitrogen to reduce side reactions at the lithium interface. However, beyond this detail, the company is keeping most of its technology under wraps as competition intensifies to safely mass-produce solid-state batteries. Additionally, Huawei theorizes that its battery technology could deliver around 1,864 miles of range and achieve a 10% to 80% charge in under five minutes, which would mark a transformative leap for electric vehicles. While Huawei's claims have generated excitement, experts caution that these estimates remain theoretical at present, with practical application depending on charging infrastructure that is yet to be developed commercially. Despite this, the promise of the technology and Huawei's entry into the field have sparked fresh interest and concern among global competitors, CarNewsChina reported. The company has shown an increasing interest in upstream battery components, even though it does not produce power batteries. Earlier in 2025, Huawei filed a separate patent application for manufacturing sulfide electrolytes, a critical material known for its exceptional conductivity and high cost—sometimes even exceeding that of gold. China is currently celebrating its dominance in the electric vehicle market and is eager to showcase innovations that could reshape the industry. While megawatt charging has recently grabbed headlines, solid-state battery technology has been quietly developing behind the scenes for some time. The country is expected to be among the first to bring solid-state batteries to market. In this regard, Fujian-headquartered CATL is scheduled to begin pilot production of a hybrid solid-state battery by 2027. However, industry analysts contend the timeline may be longer and the results less groundbreaking than many domestic companies claim. In the past decade, traditional leaders like Toyota, Panasonic, and Samsung have been investing heavily in solid-state battery research and development. In 2023, Toyota revealed a prototype boasting a range of about 745 miles and a 10-minute charge time, aiming for commercial release within five years. Meanwhile, China has quickly closed the gap. Public data shows that Chinese companies now file over 7,600 solid-state battery patents each year, accounting for 36.7% of the world's total patent activity in this field.
