Watchdog opens probe into ex-MP Geoffrey Robinson over spending rules

A parliamentary watchdog has opened an investigation into whether former Labour MP Geoffrey Robinson has breached spending rules. Ipsa said it would not be publishing any further information until the investigation has concluded. Mr Robinson served as a Labour MP between 1976 and 2019. He was a minister in Tony Blair's first government but resigned in 1998 after it was revealed he had lent £373,000 to Peter Mandelson, who partly bought a home with the interest-free loan. Pakistan airport-backing Labour MP faces standards probe into claims he broke Commons spending rules on accommodation and travel costs

A Labour MP is to be formally investigated by the Commons' standards watchdog over claims he broke spending rules, it was revealed today. Tahir Ali, 53, is facing a probe by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) relating to 'spending on office costs, travel and accommodation'. In a statement today an Ipsa spokeswoman said: 'The Compliance Officer for Ipsa has opened an investigation to determine whether Mr Tahir Ali MP has breached spending rules under IPSA's Scheme of MPs' Staffing and Business Costs. 'The investigation relates to the MP's spending on office costs, travel and accommodation.' The Labour MP for Birmingham Hall Green and Moseley has made headlines recently for championing the building of an airport in Pakistan in the middle of a bin strike crisis that saw rubbish pile up in his constituency. He and 19 other MPs called for a new air hub in Mirpur, Kashmir, because its absence was causing 'significant issues to a number of my constituents who are having to drive over three hours to get to the nearest airport in Pakistan'. He was also accused of demanding a blasphemy law when he asked Keir Starmer last November 'to prohibit the desecration of all religious texts and the prophets of the Abrahamic religions'.
