Paul Gallen delivers huge ‘up yours' to Phil Gould after defeating Sonny Bill Williams

Paul Gallen has delivered a brutal 'up yours' to Phil Gould after beating Sonny Bill Williams by split decision on Wednesday night. After narrowly edging Sonny Bill in a main event classic, 'G-Train' brought an end to his boxing career that saw him take on some of Australia's biggest names in the sport, such as Justis Huni and Lucas Browne. Speaking in the mixed zone after the fight, Gallen said he was motivated to go out on a high, but the win was made even sweeter by the fact that, in doing so, he could give a big 'up yours' to Bulldogs supremo Gould. 'Do you know what I'm most happy with today? Gus Gould backed Sonny Bill Williams,' Gallen said. 'Let me tell you now, there's not a single person or single thing that someone can say that's going to motivate me more than I motivate myself, but every now and then I'm happy to say up yours. 'Gus, up yours. Got him!' However, Gallen's win didn't come without plenty of controversy, with many feeling Williams did enough to get the win. Williams looked far fitter and fresher in the early rounds, using his jab to good effect, before Gallen produced one of his trademark comebacks to take the win and all the bragging rights by split decision, 77-74, 74-77, 76-75. However, Aussie boxing legend Danny Green saw it differently. 'It's very difficult to score a fight when ... you're so involved in calling it; you're not really counting the punches,' Green said. 'But for me, Sonny landed the cleaner, harder, crisper shots that were more eye-catching, and professional boxing is scored on the cleaner, harder punches. 'I said, I questioned, 'Are the judges going to score those body shots?', and if they were, landed a tonne. So that was the difference, I guess.' Stan Sport commentator Renee Gartner also thought Williams did enough to get his hand raised. 'Yes, there were body punches from Gallen, but I just didn't think there was enough. I didn't think the workrate was there, and I don't think the defence was there, either. 'I do love Gal, he's one of my favourites, and I was backing him to win the fight, but I just thought it was more steered towards Sonny.' 'I was steering more towards Sonny. I thought even with the point off, I thought he was still in front there,' Gartner said. 'I thought he was a lot more tactical, he was a lot more evasive ... he landed more [punches], he was cleaner. And safe to say Williams didn't take the decision loss well either. Such was his dismay that he stormed out of the ring after the result was announced and refused to do a post-fight interview or address the media. After pushed for a comment on the result from the Sonny Bill camp, they came back with: 'You saw it, you can report on what you saw.'

Fans call out SBW over sad post-fight act as Paul Gallen dragged into 'bizarre' scenes

Paul Gallen has won a controversial split-decision victory over Sonny Bill Williams in their boxing match and while the pair seem ready to put aside their bad blood it didn't stop the former All Blacks star leaving the ring before being interviewed. Gallen and former rugby union and league player Williams finally settled their differences in the ring on Wednesday with the duo taking part in a scrappy bout in front of thousands of fans. Williams started the stronger of the two having showcased his reach and superior jab to rough up Gallen's face. However, despite only being two minute rounds, Gallen took advantage of a fatiguing Williams who got a point deducted in the seventh round for repeatedly holding the former Sharks captain in the clinch. The fight turned into a scrappy bout as Williams clinched and his point deduction ultimately cost him with two judges scoring it 77-74 and 76-75 in favour of Gallen. While a third had New Zealander Williams winning 77-74. And the controversy started as soon as the cards were read out. Williams was clearly fuming with the decision and stormed out of the ring. While many agreed with the New Zealander that he won, his decision to leave came as a big disappointment for many in attendance and watching at home considering they would have liked to see him speak. Fans paid plenty of money to attend the event at Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena, but Williams' swift exit without an interview in the ring left fans wanting more. He also declined to attend the post-fight media conference. Fans felt it wasn't a good look after all the bad blood that had clouded the bout, which should have happened years ago when both fighters were closer to their prime. The bout drew plenty of criticism with Williams' tactics being questioned with plenty of clinching making for an ugly spectacle. While others felt Williams should have remained in the ring after the defeat. SBW's constant clinching was bizarre. He could've won the fight without it. Bro was straight up hitting double under hooks like it was an MMA fight at times. Probably lucky not to have another point deducted tbh. #SBWvGallen — Jordan Patu (@Jordan_Patu) July 16, 2025 SBW leaves the ring without an interview like he's off to France 🤣#SBWvGallen — GazDog 🇦🇺 (@TheGazDog) July 16, 2025 Enjoyed that, Gal's body shots were heavy! #SBWvGallen — Gavin Wilson... Despite his shock at the judging, he revealed Williams wanted to bury the animosity and meet-up after the show is done. "I definitely lost one round, I think the second round and there was one other pretty close one and he got a point taken off, so how the hell is he winning (on one judge's card)?" Gallen said. "I got the win. That's all that matters and it will be there forever. "I'm 44 years old in less than a month's time. Sonny just came upon to me and said he wants to have a coffee man-to-man and I'm on for that. I've finished my fights, I'm getting on with my life. In a surprise admission, Gallen said he had Covid only a few weeks out from the bout and was just happy with the victory. "I'm not going to gloat, it's been a long time coming. I got the job done and that's all that matters," he added. The 43-year-old appears done with boxing as he turns his attention back to his commentary role for Channel Nine. Fans are still waiting to hear from Williams who did not address the media having appeared extremely disappointed with the split-decision loss.

Epic Taylor-Serrano trilogy ends in controversy with split decision

Katie Taylor was too good for Amanda Serrano yet again as their epic trilogy bout came to an end with a controversial split decision in New York. In an extremely tight contest, with both women leaving it all on the canvas, the Irishwoman claimed a majority decision 95-95, 97-93, 97-93, as The Sun reports. UFC 318: Holloway vs Poirier 3 | SUN 20 JULY 12PM AEST | One of the most iconic careers in MMA history will come to a close, as UFC veteran Dustin Poirier makes his final walk to the Octagon for a trilogy with current BMF Champion Max Holloway. | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports. In front of a packed and raucous Madison Square Garden, and with an estimated 20 million people watching on Netflix, Taylor made it 3-0 in their rivalry with a split decision which saw one judge score it a draw. The two stars earned an incredible $13.5 million each for headlining an all-women's card that saw a world record 17 championship titles up for grabs. Australian-based Cherneka 'Sugar Neekz' Johnson was part of the undercard, emerging as the new undisputed bantamweight world champion after defeating Shurretta Metcalf by TKO to claim the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO bantamweight belts. The third Taylor-Serrano fight did not live up to the hype or action of the first two fights, but it was a more polished bout between the two superstars Taylor, 39, admitted she was 'a bit concerned' before the decision was announced, but felt she had done enough to win a third fight against the Puerto Rican. 'Yeah, I mean I don't think anybody could deny that I won tonight so it was very, very satisfying,' she said. 'The other previous fights some people had her winning, some people had me winning, so there was always that debate and that's why there was a trilogy at the end of the day. 'I was coming into this trilogy 2-0 against her but there was controversy in those decisions so I feel very satisfied that it was lights out and I feel like it was a very, very dominant performance.' Taylor also said she adopted different tactics this time around. 'I thought I showed a very smart performance, a very cleaver performance. I knew I was capable of it against Amanda,' the now 25-1 fighter said. 'The two fights previous were complete wars and I came out of it battered and bruised and I'm thinking, why am I sitting there and fighting when I knew I was capable of moving my legs and outboxing her. 'I was just happy I was able to produce that tonight and execute the game plan.' Taylor wasn't sure if this was her left performance in the ring. 'I wouldn't say I have anything left to prove,' she said. 'But I'm going to sit back and relax and like I say I will make a decision on whether I will fight again.' Some of those watching on lamented the lack of scoring punches from the two fighters and that was reflected in the stats. Serrano threw a huge volume of jabs in the contest, but they were very inaccurate. The losing fighter landed just 9.67 per cent of her 217 jabs thrown and 18.32 per cent overall. Taylor, meanwhile, landed the same number of total punches as Serrano – 70 – but threw 151 fewer punches. Her accuracy was a much more respectable 30.3 per cent. The two boxers showed great respect for each other after another bruising contest, with Serrano believing she had won the fight. 'We tried something different, it was all about working smarter, not harder,' Serrano said in the ring after the fight. 'I tried to keep my distance because apparently it didn't worth the first two fights. So we tried to stick with the long punches and it just wasn't enough. 'I don't know, I have to go back and watch it. My team told me they think I won, I'm going to believe what they tell me. 'I was really trying to apply what they were telling me.' Full list of results: Katie Taylor beat Amanda Serrano by majority decision – IBF, WBC, WBO super-lightweight titles Alycia Baumgardner beat Jennifer Miranda by unanimous decision – IBF, WBC, WBO super-featherweight titles Shadasia Green beat Savannah Marshall by split decision – IBF, WBO super-middleweight titles Ellie Scotney beat Yamileth Mercardo by unanimous decision – IBF, WBC, WBO super-bantamweight titles Cherneka Johnson beat Shurretta Metcalf by ninth-round TKO – IBF, WBC, WBO bantamweight titles Chantelle Cameron beat Jessica Camara by unanimous decision

Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano 3 LIVE RESULTS: Epic trilogy ends in huge controversy AGAIN with majority decision win

KATIE TAYLOR beat Amanda Serrano YET AGAIN as their epic trilogy came to an end with a controversial split decision. In yet another brilliant fight between Taylor and Serrano, the fight was extremely close with both women leaving it all on the canvas. In front of a packed and raucous Madison Square Garden, Taylor made it 3-0 in their rivalry with a split decision which saw one judge score it a draw. The two stars earned an incredible £6.6MILLION ($9m) each for headlining an incredible all-women's card that saw SEVENTEEN world titles up for grabs. 11th Jul 2025, 23:07 By Connor Greaves The stage is set Taylor and Serrano will meet where it all began back in April 2022, Madison Square Garden. Another fight like the first would be a fitting end to a historic trilogy. By Connor Greaves Cameron eyeing Taylor vs Serrano winner English boxer Chantelle Cameron will be looking to set up a meeting with the winner of tonight's main event should she beat the experienced Jessica Camara. Cameron has already achieved something that Serrano has not in defeating Taylor. The 34-year-old stunned the world of boxing when she beat the Bray Bomber by majority decision in May 2023. The pair had a rematch, which Taylor won, but a decisive trilogy bout could be in the making should they both have their arms raised tonight. Speaking about a potential trilogy fight with Taylor, Cameron said: 'I'm told I will fight the winner of Katie versus Amanda, because I'm the WBC interim champion. 'I don't say I'm confident of getting a third fight with Katie though because the trilogy fight with her should have happened a long time ago. I've fought her in Dublin twice and she told me after the second one in the ring that the trilogy fight will happen. 'I thought it was signed and sealed, I agreed the date and venue, and I was actually taking less money for it than the first two fights. But then I got told she wanted an easier fight next and was fighting her mandatory instead of me. 'She didn't want to fight me again and has she changed her mind? Probably not.' 11th Jul 2025, 22:50 By Connor Greaves Tonight's card in FULL Fans are most looking forward to Taylor and Serrano's thrilling trilogy fight.
