Spring was sunniest since records began as Brits enjoy 630 hours of sun in three months

SPRING was the sunniest since records began in 1910, the Met Office said yesterday. Britain enjoyed 630 hours of sun from March 1 to May 27. 2 That topped the previous best of 626 hours set around lockdown in 2020. Temperatures are also set to soar after days of rain. Today's 23C (73.4F) high will be topped by 25C (77F) tomorrow before a possible 27C (80.6F) on Saturday. Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: 'The best of the weather will be felt in the south east. "There will be some rain in places, particularly across western areas and parts of Wales. But for the most part it's going to be dry and sunny.' Summer's arrival comes hot on the heels of an unprecedented spring. The hottest day of the year so far was on May 1, when 29.3C (84.7F) was recorded at London's Kew Gardens. Forecasters said the latest provisional data means seven of the top ten sunniest springs have been recorded since 2000. Last year the UK saw only 377 hours of sunshine across March, April and May — making it one of the dullest springs on record. Met Office scientist Emily Carlisle said: 'We all remember the exceptionally sunny spring of 2020, but that title has now been surpassed by the spring of 2025. "It has indeed been an extremely sunny and dry spring for the majority. Some nice sunrise and sunsets' as weather bosses pinpoint Spring temps hit 17C 'But with a few days left of the season and more unsettled weather this week, it's too early to say what will happen with other records.' Figures for spring rainfall totals are due to be published by the Met Office later this week.

No, a Tank Top Is Not Just a Tank Top

The humble white tank top is a classic layering garment—one of those staple pieces in your wardrobe that are constantly in the summer rotation. You can throw it on under a denim jacket or button-up shirt without virtually any thought. But that doesn't have to mean it's boring! Sure, it may not be as flashy as the latest It bag or a trendy scarf skirt, but if the 2025 spring runways are proof, a tank top can be more than just an undershirt. In fact, with the right styling and finishings (sequins! Prints!), it can even be an unexpected statement piece this season. Take all of the flashy tanks that popped up on the recent spring catwalks. At Rabanne, classic tank top silhouettes were covered in silvery chainmail—a signature material of the label. At Tory Burch, an equally-blingy approach was taken: The designer covered them in sparkly red or blue sequins. Instead of the customary white or black cotton, designers are rethinking the piece and making the case for it as more of an eye-catching focal point. Basic? More like the better 'B' word: Bold. Rabanne spring 2025 Photo: Umberto Fratini / Tory Burch spring 2025 Alessandro Viero / Celebrities and the street style set are on board with the summer approach. Back in February, remember when Timothée Chalamet hit the Berlin Film Festival in a pink Chrome Hearts tank top? He proved that with a fun color and designer logo plastered onto it, a tank can, in fact, be red carpet worthy. Ditto for South Korean model Hyun Ji Shin, who hit Fashion Month in a fringed tank top and wide-leg trousers—the street style photographers instantly went wild for the textured top.

Wet bank holiday weather to end record-breaking dry spring

Wet weather across the bank holiday weekend is expected to end what has been a record-breaking start to spring. While Sunday and Monday will not be a complete washout, the Met Office said unsettled weather is expected to disrupt a warmer-than-average May. England had its driest start to spring in March and April since 1956, with half the expected rainfall in April and only a quarter of the long-term average in March, Met Office figures show. According to the forecaster, until Friday night, Leuchars in Fife went 34 days without rain, while people in Bradford, West Yorkshire, did not see rain for 31 days. Sunday promises a day of sunshine and showers 🌦️ — Met Office (@metoffice) May 24, 2025 'It's been very dry but it will change to something more unsettled on Sunday morning,' meteorologist Zoe Hatton said. 'Across the north of the countryside of Scotland is likely to be wet and quite miserable initially. 'A band of rain will be moving eastwards overnight lingering in the far north of Scotland. Elsewhere it's not going to be widely wet. 'There's going to be low cloud in places which could produce outbreaks of rain across the Pennines and across higher ground in the south of England, but the main focus will really be northern Scotland. 'As the day moves on that band of rain will move eastwards and we're going to see showers arriving from the west. Smelled something different today? 🤔 After a long dry spell you may have noticed the 'petrichor' aka the smell of rain ☔ You can find out more here: — Met Office (@metoffice) May 24, 2025 'The most likely places affected will be Northern Ireland, Scotland and the north of England, and some quite frequent blustery showers across parts of the country, but drier further south.' Temperatures on Sunday are expected to peak at about 15C in Scotland, with highs of 21C to 22C in the south of England. 'As we go into bank holiday Monday we're expecting things to stay fairly similar, with showers arriving from the west heaviest and most frequent across the north and west of the country, in Scotland and Northern Ireland,' Ms Hatton said. 'It's not a complete washout, there will be drier, brighter interludes. It shouldn't feel particularly cold as we go into the new working week. 'Temperatures are expected to start rising by the end of the week, so perhaps feeling a little bit warmer in the sunshine from Friday onwards.' Forecasters are warning that heavy winds on Saturday night into Sunday could create difficult conditions for campers over the long weekend. There are no weather warnings in force but the winds could reach 50mph in some northern areas.

Meet My House Asparagus

I'm pleased to announce that I've found my house asparagus recipe for spring 2025: this miso-chile asparagus with tofu from Melissa Clark, my fellow asparagus nut. The house recipe is the dish I cook over and over again when I have asparagus in the fridge, which is often this time of year. One spring it was asparagus with fried eggs. Another was asparagus and pasta in different configurations. But this year, I'll be glazing asparagus and tofu cubes with an easy miso sauce and broiling it all for a dinner that's ready in 25 minutes. That recipe, and four more great options for the days ahead, are below. And if you're new to asparagus, welcome! We have a guide for you that covers buying and prepping, as well as different ways to make it. One note: Last week, we asked whether and how you're changing your grocery shopping, meal planning and cooking because of rising costs. I received dozens of (fascinating, smart, insightful) emails from you. So please, keep them coming! Send me your cost-saving strategies and tell me what you're cooking by emailing me at dearemily@ We'll be gathering up your tips and publishing them soon. Look, asparagus is the whole reason Melissa created this recipe, but green beans work too. The sauce here is especially good. View this recipe. Buttery, garlicky, lemony ease from Lidey Heuck, who describes this recipe as 'chicken for beginners.' The chicken experts will probably love it, too. View this recipe. Ifrah F. Ahmed's version of the fragrant coastal Somali curry is built on xawaash, a spice blend that's easy to make if you can't find it at the store. Silky coconut milk and bright tomatoes always make magic with fish. View this recipe. This simple but sophisticated dinner comes from Yasmin Fahr, who tosses couscous, arugula and large flakes of salmon with a dressing that's dually inspired by green goddess and Persian mast-o khiar. View this recipe. This new recipe from Nargisse Benkabbou is on the agenda for dinner at my house this week. No doubt it will be delicious — the early comments are raves — and crisp-chewy halloumi is a uniquely excellent treat. View this recipe. Thanks for reading and cooking. Butter Yellow, Blurred Berry, and More of the Summer's Top Makeup Color Trends

It's natural for makeup color trends to match the season they accompany. While fall lends itself to burnt, rusty, and foliage hues, winter skews more deep and snowy. But as as spring turns to summer, we tend to embrace a more playful approach via brighter, energetic shades—showing up in creative ways along the eyes, lips, and cheeks; though, how we wear these shades changes year after year. 'We're seeing a shift toward intentional color—tones that feel both expressive and wearable,' Chanel makeup artist Tyron Machhausen tells Vogue, embracing a more refined, soft, and nostalgic feel compared to 2024. 'While last year was all about bold, statement-making shades and maximalist vibes, 2025 feels a bit more subdued, with a focus on pastel tones and textures that are easier to wear day-to-day.' His texture point is interesting, because we've been taking note of that too—from reimagined mattes to high-shine and innovative formats trickling in from Korea, there's an increased interest to how our products feel and wear. Playing with texture is spirited, without being too overbearing. Pro makeup artist Christin Cook Zito likens it to a take on Y2K with a modern polish. When it comes to incorporating these hues into one's regimen, don't feel the need to go all in. 'It's all about letting the color pop without it feeling too heavy or overworked,' Machhausen continues, starting with a fresh, natural complexion as the perfect base. Then, start small by picking a shade you're drawn to and try it in a more minimal way. 'You could apply a pastel or berry hue just to the inner corner of your eye as a fun highlight or swap a bold lip for a berry-colored balm. Creamy textures and frosted shades are super easy to work with and forgiving—no need for perfect application.' Whether you're going bold or minimal, a look at the colors to play with all summer long; plus, how to wear and shop the now. Butter Yellow Butter yellow is the undisputed color of spring 2025, and we do not see the trend slowing down through peak summer. Celebrity makeup artist Timothy McKay anticipates smooth tones of buttery and bright yellow to dominate, even leaning more into the green family for a beautiful chartreuse hue come September. Until then, add a pop of the shade to the nails with polishes by Essie and JINsoon; or, to the lids via pigments by Victoria Beckham Beauty and MOB Beauty for a sunny touch to any look. Blurred Berry 'Berry tones are also coming through strong this season,' Machhausen spills, as a smart way to bring depth and energy to a more neutral palette. 'I especially love a monochromatic look, with deep, matte berry tones across the eyes, lips, and cheeks—it gives a subtle, Y2K vibe without feeling costume-y.' Zito is on the berry train, too, but looking towards blurred finishes on the lips. 'You get the richness of berry shades like raspberry and Bordeaux but with that diffused, soft finish," she says. 'It's low-maintenance but looks effortless.' Rhode Pocket Blush in Date Cake $24 RHODE Fwee Blurry Pudding Pot in Ambitious $16 AMAZON Pistachio Green Pistachio or matcha, muted greens are slowly making their way into the makeup routines of the masses. 'Pastels [like these] bring a lighter, airier vibe that's a shift from the bolder, more intense colors we saw in 2024,' Machhausen sites. Think: creamy, gelato-inspired hues. 'There's a fresh, understated, cool-girl feel to them, especially when paired with minimal, clean-skin makeup.' Swatch a bit of pigment over the lids or add a hint of color with a liner. 'This adds an unexpected twist that still feels effortless,' he adds. Chanel Ombre Essentielle Multi-Use Longwearing Eyeshadow in Jace Facette $40 CHANEL NYX Epic Wear Liner Stick in Chartreuse $9 AMAZON Nailberry L'Oxygéné Oxygenated Nail Lacquer in Pistach-Oh! $21 AMAZON Ilia Eye Stylus Shadow Stick in Opulent $32 ILIA Wet Shine 'Texture is just as important as color this season; expect a curated mix of satin-mattes, luminous glosses, and refined metallics,' Machhausen says. 'The overall direction is polished, but playful, designed for versatility and self-expression without feeling overdone.' To wit, many are amplifying their favorite colors with a drench of wet shine. Take a high-octane gloss for example, like Rouge Coco Baume, which he says 'delivers that juicy, one-swipe payoff that's perfect for every day.' Or, pair your favorite lip liner with a bit of Fenty Beauty's luminizer in shade Glass Slipper for lacquered shine sure to last. The nails are getting the luminizing treatment too, via eye-catching top coats like our favorite by OPI. Chanel Rogue Coco Baume Shine Tinted Lip Balm in Raspberry Kiss $48 CHANEL OPI Gel Plump Effect Top Coat $15 AMAZON Lovely Lilac The emergence of lilac makes Zito particularly excited. 'It's fresh, cool, and totally on-trend for spring and summer,' she says. 'A little lilac on the cheeks, on the eyes and even Lila's setting powder—it's a dreamy, modern twist on color. Plus, it's versatile, which makes it so easy to wear for anyone.' To give the trend a try, Machhausen suggest a soft wash of soft wash of Chanel's Ombre Essentielle in shade Lilas Poudre over the lid. For something more creamy, you're best suited to turn to RMS's nourishing matte formula. Or, keep it simple with an etching of a Glossier eyeliner pencil. Just round out the look with Gucci's frosted highlighter. Gucci Glow Multi-Use Illuminating Gel-Powder Highlighter in Frosted Lilac $59 NORDSTROM Chanel Ombre Essentielle Multi-Use Longwearing Eyeshadow in Lilas Poudre $40 CHANEL Oceanic Coral Let your look take cues from the ocean floor with effervescent bursts of coral. To deliver a youthful beach glow, Zito cites the shade as the perfect companion to dewy, hydrated skin. Simply add a touch of Saie or Merit's cream blushes to the apples of the cheeks. For those more interested in lip finishes, Dior's balm locks in moisture for a smoother, plumper pout; Westman Atelier's lipstick dries down into a matte finish known to last for hours. Dior Dior Addict Lip Glow Balm in 004 Coral $40 NORDSTROM Saie Dew Blush in Poppy $25 SAIE Future Nostalgia Per Zito, bronze, gold, and shimmering metallics are going to be everywhere, especially paired with those electric blue and purple pops of color on the lid. 'It's like a cool mix of futuristic and nostalgic, bringing a bit of Y2K back but with a refined edge,' she says. ' I also think we will see more frosted shades and glitter and chrome or holographic colors and textures!' McKay has picked up on the tones too—citing metallic hues of eyeliner: think aqua, Atlantic blue, and emerald.
