State police cruiser struck on I-95 in New Haven
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A state police cruiser was struck on I-95 in New Haven on Saturday, officials said. The incident took place around 6:30 a.m. in the area of Exit 48 in New Haven. Crews respond to multiple Saturday morning crashes in Brookfield State police said the cruiser was struck after being parked in a construction pattern. Minor injuries were reported. Colchester man charged with public indecency
COLCHESTER, Conn. (WTNH) — A Colchester man was charged on Thursday for alleged public indecency, state police said. Alan Sims, 66, was allegedly seen at the Colchester Dog Park watching pornography and pleasuring himself in the open around 1:30 p.m. Man charged with public indecency at Meriden train station A landscaping crew observed Sims and notified police, but he left before police arrived. A witness provided his license plate information and police arrested him. He was charged with second-degree breach of peace and public indecency. Connecticut State Police recap Memorial Day Weekend roads
CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — Crashes have been on the rise this Memorial Day Weekend, according to state police. Accidents range from one in Torrington where two motorcycles collided and both drivers suffered life-threatening injuries to one on the Merritt Parkway in Meriden where there was a multi-car crash with minor injuries. Residents take to Hammonasset Beach on Memorial Day to kick off summer There has been one fatality this year and two serious injuries due to crashes. Overall, there have been fewer accidents than last year. Drivers say that they've noticed. 'So far holiday traffic has been good. We're traveling to Newtown where we live and we went to Glastonbury where my sister lives,' John Browne, a Newtown resident, said. State police, the department of transportation (DOT) and department of motor vehicles (DMV) are out on the roads and airways reminding drivers to take it easy and to not drive distracted, impaired or drowsy. 'We know that 100 days from Memorial Day to Labor Day it's going to be beaches and lakes and friends all over the place, but we want them to come home safe,' DMV Commissioner Tony Guerrera said. Former New York state trooper pleads guilty to faking his own shooting
MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A former New York state trooper pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges that he shot himself then falsely claimed he was wounded by an unknown gunman on a Long Island highway, prompting a regionwide search. Thomas Mascia agreed to serve six months in jail, followed by five months of probation and continued mental health treatment as he formally changed his not guilty plea during a court appearance in Nassau County court in Mineola. He also agreed, as part of his plea deal, to pay $289,000 in restitution for the overtime costs for officers during the three-day search for a nonexistent suspect. Mascia will be sentenced Aug. 20. The West Hempstead resident had been charged with official misconduct, tampering with evidence and falsifying documents. He became a trooper in 2019 and resigned after being suspended without pay while state police launched a criminal investigation into the shooting. Mascia's parents, Dorothy and Thomas, were also expected to plead guilty Wednesday to firearms charges. Mascia claimed he was shot in the leg on Oct. 30 by a driver parked on the shoulder of the Southern State Parkway, about a mile from his home. The shooting prompted a massive search as the trooper said the suspect, who he claimed was a 'dark-skinned' man, fled in a car bearing temporary New Jersey plates heading toward New York City. Instead, prosecutors say, Mascia shot himself in a local park, stashed the gun, drove to the highway and called for backup. They say the ruse was an apparent bid to gain attention and sympathy. Jeffrey Lichtman, Mascia's lawyer, didn't immediately comment. He previously said the former trooper, who resigned in January after his arrest, has been suffering from 'untreated mental health issues' for years. Mascia had appeared in court earlier this month to change his plea, but the judge at the time halted the proceedings after the former trooper said he did not feel well mentally and was receiving treatment.

One person hospitalized after car collides with tree in Tolland
