US asks judge to dismiss Boeing 737 MAX criminal fraud case
(Reuters) -The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday asked a judge to dismiss a criminal fraud charge against Boeing stemming from two fatal 737 MAX plane crashes that killed 346 people, saying it had reached agreement with the planemaker. Under the deal, the U.S. planemaker will avoid being branded a convicted felon but it has agreed to pay an additional $444.5 million into a crash victims' fund that would be divided evenly per crash victim on top of an additional $243.6 million fine. Boeing, which last year had agreed to plead guilty as part of a deal, will pay $1.1 billion including the fine and compensation to families and over $455 million to strengthen the company's compliance, safety, and quality programs, the Justice Department said, adding the deal "secures meaningful accountability, delivers substantial and immediate public benefits, and brings finality to a difficult and complex case whose outcome would otherwise be uncertain." What Makes Amazon.com (AMZN) an Incredible Long-Term Bet?
Polen Capital, an investment management company, released its 'Polen Global Growth Strategy' first-quarter 2025 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. Global equity markets experienced a surge in volatility in 2025 due to US tariffs, with the "Magnificent 7" falling 15% and semiconductors dropping 19%. U.S. stocks lagged, with international equities surpassing them by nearly 10% due to a weakening dollar and a significant tariff shock after the quarter's close. The Strategy returned -5.18% gross (-5.45 % net) in the quarter compared to the MSCI ACW Index's -1.32% return. In addition, please check the fund's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2025. In its first-quarter 2025 investor letter, Polen Global Growth Strategy highlighted stocks such as Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN). Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) provides consumer products, advertising, and subscription services through online and physical stores that operate through North America, International, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) segments. The one-month return of Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) was 6.43%, and its shares gained 11.28% of their value over the last 52 weeks. On May 22, 2025, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) stock closed at $203.10 per share with a market capitalization of $203.10 trillion. Polen Global Growth Strategy stated the following regarding Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) in its Q1 2025 investor letter: " Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) fell -13% in the quarter, stemming from weaker-than expected first quarter guidance and concerns over the potential tariff-induced headwinds they may face, given that many third party sellers on their e-commerce platform are based in China. However, we think their first-party and third-party commerce platform should prove fairly resilient, aided by strength in their Amazon Web Service cloud business and its bottom-of-funnel advertising business. Amazon remains our largest position, as we expect roughly 20% earnings growth over the next five years, driven by solid organic revenue growth and continued margin expansion. It remains an incredibly well-managed business with sustainable advantages and a long growth runway." A customer entering an internet retail store, illustrating the convenience of online shopping. Nassau County arrest reignites case of missing woman and her sons from U.S. army base
A decades-old mystery that spans continents is getting renewed attention after a recent arrest in Northeast Florida. Tina Grogan and her two sons, 6-year-old Dale Jr. and 4-year-old Stephon, disappeared from a U.S. Army base in Würzburg, Germany, in November 1992. Now, more than 30 years later, new information stemming from an arrest in Nassau County has led to the reopening of their case. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is offering a $15,000 reward for credible information that leads to an arrest and conviction in connection with their disappearance or death. 'This is a snapshot of the cold case victims,' said Ryan Backmann, founder of Project: Cold Case. 'Since then, it's grown to over 1,800 victims, and there's so many they can't all fit on this banner.' Grogan's niece, Arielle Garcia, said the family never got answers. 'He never reported them missing. Or her running away,' Garcia said. Grogan's husband, Dale Grogan, was stationed in Germany at the time. He was later discharged from the military and moved to Jacksonville. Her sister, Shannon Ballenger, described Tina's relationship with Dale - her high school sweetheart - as rocky. 'It would've been a blessing to have my sister, and to love her kids and for her to meet my kids and love my kids,' Ballenger said. In January 2025, Dale Grogan was arrested by the Nassau County Sheriff's Office for traveling to meet a minor. That arrest caught the attention of the Army CID Cold Case Unit, which then reopened the long-dormant disappearance case. 'No, he has not been arrested or charged with the disappearance,' said Ryan Backmann, with Project: Cold Case. 'But he was picked up in Nassau County in January for another offense, which is what seems to have started the ball rolling. He made some statements, is my understanding, after his arrest that were enough to get the Army to reopen the investigation into Tina and the boys' disappearance.' For Ballenger, the pain has never faded — but neither has her determination to find the truth. 'Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy on his soul,' she said. Project: Cold Case has helped families across nearly every state in the U.S. find answers and keep unsolved cases alive in the public eye. APEC trade ministers' meeting kicks off in South Korea
Seoul: A trade ministers' meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies kicked off on Thursday on South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju to discuss challenges facing global trade, with many bilateral meetings held on the sidelines highlighting the countries' efforts to address such issues stemming from growing trade protectionism. The APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) Meeting will be held through Friday at the International Convention Center in southern Jeju, under the theme "Building a Sustainable Tomorrow: Connect, Innovate, Prosper," according the Seoul's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Top trade officials from the 21 APEC members are taking part in the two-day event, as well as senior officials from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), reports Yonhap news agency. Soon after its start, the venue for the APEC ministers' meeting bustled with a series of bilateral meetings as many major APEC member countries, including South Korea, Japan and China, are currently undergoing trade negotiations with Washington over U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff measures. South Korean Trade Minister Cheong In-kyo was set to hold talks with US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer later Thursday on the sidelines of the MRT meeting. The scheduled meeting follows Greer's bilateral talks with China's top trade envoy, Li Chenggang, held earlier Thursday. A separate one-on-one meeting between the USTR and South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Duk-geun is planned for Friday. Greer's meetings with South Korean officials come after their countries agreed in Washington last month to craft a "package" deal on tariff and other economic cooperation issues by early July, when the 90-day pause on the Trump administration's country-specific reciprocal tariffs, including 25 percent duties on South Korea, will end. Seoul has proposed expanding bilateral cooperation in the shipbuilding and energy sectors as part of efforts to lower U.S. tariffs on Korean goods, according to government officials.
