Popovic delivers special message after Japan success

The Japan hoodoo is over, but Socceroos coach Tony Popovic has a stern message for his players: The job isn't done yet. Australia all but locked in a spot for the 2026 World Cup after Aziz Behich's 90th-minute stunner lifted the Socceroos to a 1-0 win over Japan in Perth on Thursday night. The 'all but' quantifier comes due to the fact Saudi Arabia are technically still in the hunt to steal the Socceroos' automatic qualifier spot. What it means. #Socceroos #AUSvJPN — Subway Socceroos (@Socceroos) June 5, 2025 The Saudis (13 points) kept their hopes alive by beating Bahrain 2-0 just hours after the Socceroos' win. Australia (16 points, plus eight goal difference) are still well and truly in the box seat. But if Saudi Arabia (13 points, zero goal difference) beat the Socceroos by five goals or more in Jeddah next Tuesday in the final match of the current qualifying phase, Australia will miss out on an automatic World Cup berth. Given Saudi Arabia have scored only six goals across nine matches, that scenario is unlikely, but Popovic doesn't want to take any chances. "We need to do a job in Saudi," Popovic said. "We're in a great position, but we have to finish it off. "It's been a really intense period since I've come in, but everyone's embraced what we're aiming to do. "We're very close now to achieving our goal." 90TH MINUTE. AZIZ BEHICH 🥶A goal worth waiting 13 years for 😉🎥 @10FootballAU #Socceroos #AUSvJPN — Subway Socceroos (@Socceroos) June 5, 2025 Thursday night's win in front of 57,226 fans marked the Socceroos' first victory over Japan since 2009, and inflicted a first loss on the Samurai Blue since their defeat to Iran at the Asian Cup in 2023. But it was far from a pretty display by the Socceroos against what was effectively a Japanese B team. Given they had already secured their World Cup berth, Japan's starting XI against Australia featured a total of nine players with four caps or less, including three debutants. Despite that Japan dominated for almost the entire match, finishing with 69 per cent possession and creating the better chances until Behich's late heroics. Popovic was proud of his team's defensive grit and believed getting a win over Japan - albeit against a severely depleted opponent - was significant. "They (our players) know they've done something that hasn't been done for quite a while," Popovic said. "We kept a clean sheet, and we've done something that many Australian sides have found hard to do. "Japan have been on a wonderful run and there's a reason for that. "They are the best (in Asia) and we want to challenge them to be the best. "We shouldn't shy away from that and hopefully we take a big step forward knowing we can beat Japan." Socceroos defender Milos Degenek said his side wouldn't take an ultra conservative approach into the game against Saudi Arabia. "You don't go into any game thinking, 'Oh, we just don't want to lose 4-0'," Degenek said. "You go in wanting to win the game. Very simple."

'Are You A Historian': Karnataka HC Pulls Up Kamal Haasan Over Tamil-Kannada Remark

Last Updated: Kamal Haasan stoked a controversy with his "Kannada born out of Tamil" remark. He further refused to apologise for his remarks, drawing flak from Karnataka leaders. Taking a stern view on Kamal Haasan's 'Kannada was born out of Tamil" remark, the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday rapped the actor, asked the actor the basis of his claims, and said that his 'one apology would have solved everything". The court's remarks came while hearing a petition seeking a direction to authorities, including the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, to ban the actor's film 'Thug Life" in the state. Slamming Haasan for his remark, the High Court asked if he was a historian or a linguist. It also stressed that the petitioner may be an actor, but does not have the right to hurt the sentiments of people. 'There is no apology in it. You may be Kamala Hassan or anybody, you cannot hurt the sentiments of the masses. The division of this country is on linguistic lines. A public figure cannot make such a statement. What has happened because of it unrest, disharmony. People of Karnataka only asked apology. Now you come here seeking protection. On what basis have you made the statement? Are you a historian, linguist? On what basis did you speak?" the court said, as per LiveLaw. More to follow…

‘Stealing funds': ATO warning as three people jailed over tax fraud

With Aussies looking forward to that end-of-financial-year rebate, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has issued a stern warning about GST fraud. In a timely reminder about the consequences of committing fraud, three people from Queensland have been jailed in May. Tiarn Payten Nutley was sentenced to nine months in jail for using an existing Australian business number (ABN) to claim GST refunds for a fake beauty and salon business. Nutley shared her myGov log in with two of her friends who lodged six false business activity statements (BAS) in her name. She was sentenced for one offence of dishonestly obtaining a gain of nearly $50,000 and further trying to obtain $25,000. Nutley was released on a recognisance release order of $2000 but is required to be of good behaviour for 12 months. Her friend Skye Anne Hoek gained more than $25,000 after registering her ABN for GST and lodging two BAS that contained false information. She was sentenced to three months' jail without a recognisance release order. Gregory Pimm ran an even more elaborate fraud system – a fake road freight transport business that he claimed to run from his home. He fraudulently obtained more $265,000 in GST refunds and further tried to obtain $300,000. Pimm lodged 37 BAS for his fake business and falsely reported total sales, GST collected, GST on purchases made for the business, and GST credits the ATO owed him. He was sentenced to two years and six months in jail for obtaining and attempting to obtain a financial advantage by deception. Pimm is to be released on recognisance of $500 after six months' imprisonment. He is also to be required to be of good behaviour for three years and subject to the supervision of a probation officer for two years. All three were arrested under Operation Protego, which has taken compliance action against more than 57,000 alleged offenders – 105 convicted. Acting ATO Deputy Commissioner and Serious Financial Crime Taskforce chief Kath Anderson said these prosecutions sent a strong reminder that the ATO would bring those who commit fraud to account. 'Deliberate noncompliance has consequences. The ATO will actively pursue debts obtained through fraudulent GST funds, using all the tools at our disposal to recoup those funds. Those who seek to defraud the tax and super systems will get caught and face the full force of the law,' she said. 'We are equipped with resources, sophisticated data matching, analytics capability and intelligence sharing relationships. If you think you won't be caught, think again. 'These individuals face long-term consequences. Not only do they need to repay the money, but they will have a criminal record, which may affect their ability to secure employment, obtain finance or insurance and travel overseas. 'Engaging in GST fraud rips off your own community by stealing funds that would go to essential services, like health and education. 'Under the ATO's Counter Fraud Program, we will continue to grow the capability and tools we need to respond to fraud in an agile and sophisticated way, collecting data and information to prevent, detect and address fraud in close to real time.'

Donegal's Doogan takes Rás yellow as Perrett clinches stage two in Clifden

The yellow jersey changed hands after the second day of this year's Rás Tailteann proved to be just as stern a test of the riders' grit and guts as the first. Donegal's Odhran Doogan, representing Cycling Ulster, surged into the leader's colours taking the yellow jersey from Tim Shoreman (Wheelbase-Cabtech-Castelli) after 170.9km of hard road from Charlestown, Co Mayo south to Clifden, Co Galway. Englishman Will Perrett came out on top to take stage two honours and admitted it hadn't been easy going. "It was a really, really tough stage," said the DAS Richardsons rider. "This final run-in, it was just chopping off into the crosswind and that was so tough. I saw I had the gap and just committed. I managed to stay away [on my own]. I'm really happy. It's my first win at the Rás." Nottingham-born Perrett would have been claiming the yellow jersey were it not for a crash 3.5km from the end of the opening day's stage but has his eyes on moving up. The morning's leader Shoreman couldn't reel in a break from the main group but Doogan and a smaller chasing pack caught up with that leading bunch and he managed to finish third in the stage to take command at the top, thanks to his points tally from the climbs and sprints. In the process Doogan becomes the first ever Donegal man to wear the leaders yellow jersey of the Ras. Friday's third stage will see the riders set off from Cong, Co Mayo and then take the scenic route down the Wild Atlantic Way before an exciting end awaits them. Fans are likely to see a sprint finish as the rivals come into Miltown Malbay in Co Clare. Elsewhere Olav Kooij sprinted to victory on stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia as Isaac Del Toro retained the pink jersey in Viadana. Kooij was helped by a superb lead-out from Visma-Lease A Bike team-mate Wout Van Aert, with Casper van Uden second over the line ahead of Britain's Ben Turner. The 172km stage from Modena, the first opportunity for the quick men in a week, came down to the final few bends of a technical finish left slightly damp by earlier rain in Viadana, and Van Aert used all his experience to win the fight for position going into the final sharp left-hander. Team Picnic PostNL's Van Uden tried to go long with his sprint after being left with a slight gap as the road straightened out, but Kooij kept his cool to take the win while the Ineos Grenadiers' Turner held off Mads Pedersen for the last step on the podium. A small crash in the peloton with around one kilometre left to go neutralised the times for the overall standings, allowing the general classification contenders to sit up. Del Toro leads by 33 seconds from his UAE Team Emirates team-mate Juan Ayuso with Bahrain-Victorious rider Antonio Tiberi third. Bonus seconds saw Wednesday's stage winner Richard Carapaz move up to fourth, on the same time as Kooij's team-mate Simon Yates in fifth, one minute and 11 seconds off pink. With files from PA

Punjab info panel flags glaring deficiencies in RTI handling

1 2 Chandigarh: In a scathing indictment of the state's public works department (building and roads), the Punjab State Information Commission has flagged glaring systemic deficiencies that obstruct citizen access to information under the RTI Act. The commission observed that such lapses prevent RTI requests from being processed effectively and information from being provided in a timely manner. These observations were made by state information commissioner Bhupinder S Batth during a hearing on an appeal filed by a Pathankot resident , who claimed that only partial information was provided in response to his RTI query to the PWD (B&R), Pathankot. Despite pointing out discrepancies earlier, the appellant claimed no corrective action or response was received from the department. Upon reviewing the case, the commission found that information for key points remained unanswered, and the clerk appearing on behalf of the respondent was unaware of case specifics. The public information officer (PIO) was absent and failed to respond to a show-cause notice already issued by the commission. Calling it a serious lapse, the commission stated that the respondent PIO demonstrated complete disregard for the RTI Act, 2005, and adopted a casual, callous approach toward the RTI mechanism. "It is abundantly clear that such matters are being ignored and set aside, which reflects disrespect towards the RTI Act itself," the commission remarked in its order. It observed that there are glaring systemic deficiencies in the department and criticised the lack of a proper record-keeping system. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 새로 나온 '암보험' 최적가 가입인기! Despite its stern stance, the commission extended a final opportunity to the PIO, directing him to appear personally at the next hearing and submit a written reply to the show-cause notice. He was also instructed to provide the complete pending information to the appellant within two weeks of receiving the commission's order. Failure to comply, the order warned, will invite action under Section 20(1) of the RTI Act, which provides for penalties against erring officials. The case is next listed for hearing on July 30.
