Canberra man who led ACT police on hours-long chase in stolen car sentenced

A Canberra man who led police on a wild chase around Canberra in a stolen car and drove at officers trying to stop him, has been sentenced to nearly three years jail by the ACT Supreme Court. Jordan Massey, 25, pleaded guilty to taking a Mercedes Benz from Moncrieff in August 2023, and a Dodge RAM ute from Gungahlin. Police in an unmarked car came upon the ute after a search of the area, as Massey was driving it out of a garage. He drove around the police car, mouthing the word "f***", and sped off, crossing green belts and driving on the wrong side of the road, in a bid to avoid police, in heavy traffic. The on-again, off-again chase continued for several hours across Canberra, ending in the south of the ACT, where police deployed tyre deflation devices. Massey then drove at the police officers who hid behind their cars. The ute eventually stopped because the front tyre was flat and Massey fled, although he was caught about 100 metres from the car. In a pre-sentence interview Massey told a forensic psychologist he had been going straight after a day program, but went back to using drugs after a traumatic event. He said he was "getting cars to get drugs and then avoiding the cops" and that he wanted to "pump the music loud and forget about what has happened". After the fact, Massey acknowledged the harm he had done and said he would like to offer the owners "a big apology". During the sentencing Acting Justice Rebecca Christensen acknowledged Massey's difficult past. "What Mr Massey was raised to understand was a world of violence, substance misuse, neglect, abandonment, insecure housing, inadequate formal education opportunities, and the challenges of parental incarceration and mental ill health," Acting Justice Christensen said. "The experience of the courts shows that a person who has not been raised in the environment of a supportive 'village' is limited in their capacity to respect the broader community in which they come to live as an adult. Acting Justice Christensen said rehabilitation should still be a consideration in Massey's sentencing, which he said he is keen to do. "Despite all of his challenges, Mr Massey also presents with an inner strength and resilience that assists him to strive for a better life for himself," Acting Justice Christensen said. She said in weighing the sentence, she took on board concerns Massey ran the risk of becoming institutionalised, after spending only a few years of his adult life outside custody. Acting Justice Christensen sentenced Massey to two years and eight months jail, with a non parole period to end next year.

Top Gear star Chris Harris reveals his stolen car has been found after incredible twist

Top Gear star Chris Harris has revealed that his stolen car has been found after an incredible twist in the story. The TV personality and professional racing driver, 50, who presented Top Gear from 2016 to 2022, posted about his beloved BMW E28 M5 which he's owned for 19 years on Sunday, comparing it to a newer model. But hours later he shared an update revealing it had been stolen from the Clifton area of Bristol - before amazingly a follower stepped in to say he'd found it. His original post about his car read: 'I'm not predicting many positive comments for the newbie! I'm loving the new M5 wagon. 'Yes, it's nothing like as good as an old M5 CS on any A or B road, but that's not where or how I drive it. Boot is vast, stalker electric mode is a doozy at 4am, boot takes 4 sets of golf clubs. 'But yes, the black car is about as good as it gets. E28 forever!' Chris then shared a post with a snap of just the black BMW, saying: 'Owned 19 years and stolen last night. Please keep an eye out for it.' In amazing twist of fate one of his followers called Lee commented saying: 'It's parking in my street, have sent you a PM with my phone number!' Chris then posted a follow-up after going to get his beloved car back, posing with saviour Lee and saying his car was back albeit a 'bit bruised'. He said: 'M5 update. This is Lee. He messaged saying 'I'm stood by your M5.' 'It was a long way from where I live. And they've made a bit of a mess of it, but it's back. Lee stayed with the car until I arrived. What a good man.' He continued: 'It's clear these older cars are now a target and we need to be more careful where we leave them. 'I am a very lucky boy having my favourite car returned. And Lee – thank you.' Chris' followers and famous pals were amazed by the twist in the story including fellow Top Gear star Paddy McGuinness, who commented: 'Good man Lee. Amongst the p***** it's always nice to see a rose.' His original post about his car read: 'I'm not predicting many positive comments for the newbie! I'm loving the new M5 wagon...' Gang of girls as young as 13 allegedly roll stolen car in Brighton, Melbourne

A group of teenage girls are lucky to be alive after an allegedly stolen car crashed and flipped onto its roof in a ritzy Melbourne suburb. Police were called to Rooding Street in the bayside suburb of Brighton about 9.45pm on Monday following reports a black Subaru Forester had smashed into multiple parked vehicles and then rolled. The teenagers managed to escape the wreckage and fled the scene on foot. Dramatic photos and footage showed the overturned Subaru Forester flipped on its roof in the middle of the road, which was strewn with broken glass and debris. Shocked residents were seen inspecting the extensive damage to their vehicles after they helped to free the passengers from the wreckage. They claimed that up to eight teens may have been inside the car at the time, which was allegedly stolen in Carnegie, about 7km away, earlier in the night. Bottles of vodka were reportedly also found in the car. A jetlagged Sarah Cavalier and her family had just returned from their overseas holiday when they were woken by a massive bang outside. Her car was one of those hit by the Subaru. 'We all ran out and all of a sudden the car was literally right across the whole road and there were all these kids inside going "I need my phone", and they were carrying on and trying to get out,' Ms Cavalier told Sunrise. 'We're all saying, "it's alright, just get out of the car, everything is fine".' She had no idea the car had been allegedly stolen until the teens fled the scene. 'There's a massive power pole on one side, there's a tree on this side. If they'd hit that pole, there would have been somebody dead for sure,' Ms Cavalier said. 'I don't know how they didn't get seriously hurt.' Ms Cavalier, who has children of a similar age, said it was 'sad' and 'unbelievable' the teenagers were out on a Monday night. Three 13-year-old girls and one 17-year-old girl were arrested a short time later and transported to hospital with minor injuries. They were summoned to face a children's court at a later date. No other injuries were reported. The incident has renewed calls for a crackdown on youth crime in the affluent suburb. 'It's not being treated as seriously as it should be,' a resident told the Herald Sun. 'I think the bail laws are just waffle (and) they aren't strong enough. They are out on the street again hours after all this happened.' One of Brighton's most famous residents, AFL WAG turned anti-crime crusader Bec Judd, has long criticised the state government's response to the epidemic.

San Antonio shuttle bus crash that killed 4, injured 21 has North Texas ties

As police continue to search for the suspects behind a deadly bus crash in San Antonio, new surveillance video has emerged. Investigators say the suspects were driving a car that was stolen Monday morning. The video shows two men forcing their way into a Chevrolet Camaro using a screwdriver before driving off. Officials say the stolen Camaro was later seen speeding down Interstate 35 on Thursday. It slammed into a trailer attached to a shuttle bus carrying passengers, causing the bus to lose control and collide with a semi-truck. "I don't know what goes through people's minds today, in this day in age about stealing vehicles like that and wanting to fly down the highway at such high speeds. That not only puts yourself in danger but also puts lives at risks, in which it did today," said witness Ernesto Rodriguez. Moments after the crash, four suspects were seen getting out of the Camaro and running from the scene, police said. The shuttle had departed from Fort Worth and was headed to Eagle Pass. Four passengers were killed, and 21 others were injured, including four children. The shuttle company, Transportes Guerra, is based in Fort Worth. CBS News Texas spoke with the family who runs the business and confirmed that the owner, Jose Hector Guerra — also known as "Tito" — was among those killed. He leaves behind a wife and children. "I'm praying for everybody that was involved and the family members involved, it was just a sucky thing to hear," Rodriguez said.

SIU investigating after York Regional Police officer shot driver of suspected stolen vehicle in Scarborough

One person was shot by police during an attempt to stop a suspected stolen vehicle in Scarborough. The province's police watchdog says it is investigating after the driver of a suspected stolen vehicle was shot by a York Regional Police officer who was attempting to stop the car in Scarborough on Thursday night. In a news release, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed that it has invoked its mandate after a 30-year-old man was shot by an officer near Kennedy Road and Bonis Avenue at around 7 p.m. According to the SIU, at around 6:55 p.m., officers in the area of Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue in Markham attempted to stop the driver of a car that had been reported stolen. The driver, the SIU said, failed to stop. The SIU added that when officers boxed the car in, the driver collided with police vehicles before stopping. 'One officer discharged their firearm at the man, the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,' the SIU said. The SIU is an arm's length agency called in to investigate whenever police are involved in a death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or the discharge of a weapon. Four investigators and two forensic investigators, along with a collision reconstructionist, have been assigned to the case. Anyone with information about the investigation can contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 or online at:
