Here's what we know about the tornado confirmed near Watertown on July 27

A confirmed tornado northwest of Watertown late July 27 caused "significant damage" to a farmstead, a National Weather Service meteorologist told the Argus Leader. The damage was still being assessed, so the tornado had not yet been assigned a rating as of the morning of July 28, said Kelly Serr, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Aberdeen. "We have to look at the damage to be able to assign the wind speed," Serr said. "Radar tells us a lot – it told us there was rotation there – but it can't tell us the actual wind speed of the tornado itself." There were reports of large hail on the south side of Watertown and farther to the south, Serr said, and also reports of between 3 to 5 inches of rain in Hamlin County, where some secondary roads were flooded. Multiple images and videos of the tornado were shared online as it tore across fields near Watertown. Storm topples power lines in Watertown Watertown Fire Rescue responded to multiple reports of downed power lines during the July 27 storm, a news release says. Here are the details: Shortly before 7 p.m., crews responded to 11th Street and 1st Avenue NE and found that a tree had fallen onto power lines, dropping the lines on several vehicles parked nearby. The responders confirmed that the power lines were no longer energized. About 7:05 p.m., crews responded to a report of two power poles in the roadway at 1528 17th St. NE, north of the Premier Softball complex. Both poles had snapped off, causing a large power line to make contact with a nearby residence. The power line made a burn mark on the home and damaged a gas line outside, so crews turned off the gas and made sure no fires had started inside. Shortly before 8 p.m., crews responded to a report of another downed power line in the 1700 block of 4th Avenue SW, where they found a tree had fallen on a power line, knocking it to the ground. More severe weather forecast for July 28 Another round of severe thunderstorms is expected to move through the region in the late afternoon July 28, with heavy rain and hurricane-force winds possible, the weather service says. The main concern will be wind gusts of 70 mph or more, though large hail and a few tornadoes are also possible. The storms could become a derecho as they drift over eastern South Dakota, according to the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center. The area most at risk for high winds was north of Interstate 90, including Aberdeen, Brookings, Huron and Watertown. The weather service said it "highly advised" securing any items that might easily blow away before the storms arrive. Hailstorm Leaves 40+ Mile Long Scar In North Dakota

We are used to bringing you pictures of earthly scars produced by tornadoes and wildfires, but did you know that hail damage can also leave behind a trail of destruction? That's what happened on July 10, 2025, in southwestern North Dakota. A strong thunderstorm swept eastward from near the Montana state line then passed just south of Dickinson before weakening north of Mott. As visualized by satellites in the days after the storms, the hail scar was measured to be around 42 miles long by the National Weather Service in Bismarck. The thunderstorm produced hail larger than chicken eggs near South Heart, South Dakota, where windows were broken. The storm also produced wind gusts over 50 mph and heavy rain. More windows were broken by wind-driven hail near the Montana border. This isn't the first time we've reported on a hail scar in the Dakotas. In 2018, much more potent hailstorms dropped stones as large as grapefruits in Wyoming and South Dakota and knocked down a cornfield. Those storms traveled several hundred miles. Most of the damage from these storms, both this year and in 2018, appears to have been to agriculture and forestry. "Over the past few years, according to industry sources, we've seen $8 billion to $10 billion in insured and agricultural losses annually from hail alone," Bryan Wood, meteorologist and operations analyst with Assurant, Inc., told in July 2017. The threat for significant hail peaks in late May in the southern Great Plains, but peaks later, in late June and early July, across the Dakotas. That's when the jet stream is in Canada and the hottest weather of the year persists across much of the country. Storm damage reported in parts of eastern Ontario, western Quebec

A fallen tree in the Albert Street Cemetery in Arnprior, Ont. on July 25, 2025. This follows a thunderstorm the night prior. (Kimberley Johnson/CTV News Ottawa) A line of thunderstorms that moved across eastern Ontario and western Quebec Thursday night has led to reports of damage in parts of the region. The Town of Arnprior, west of Ottawa, says several locations are closed because of storm damage, including Robert Simpson Park and its beach, the waterfront trail between the boat launch and Robert Simpson Park Beach, McLean Park, McLean Beach and ball diamond #2, and the Albert Street and Malloch Road cemeteries. 'The Town will provide updates later today on the status of these locations. Until such time, we are asking the public to stay out of these areas.' Power outages were reported across the region, with Hydro One saying crews are working to restore power to hardest hit areas. 'Outages were caused by last night's severe thunderstorms, and the damage includes broken poles, downed lines and trees. While we expect to make significant progress restoring power today, we anticipate restoration efforts will continue into tomorrow for the areas that were hit the hardest,' Hydro One says on its website. Visitors to Gatineau Park are also urged to be cautious on the trails following Thursday night's thunderstorms. Storm Update | Gatineau Park 🌩 Our teams are carrying out inspections of the Park following last night's storms. Please exercise caution, as there may be fallen trees and branches. We'll provide more updates as soon as we can.#onstorm — Gatineau Park (@NCC_GatPark) July 25, 2025 The National Capital Commission says crews are inspecting the park. 'Please exercise caution, as there may be fallen trees and branches,' the NCC says. Tree damage was also reported in areas including Pontiac and Shawville. Hydro Quebec was reporting more than 12,000 customers still without power in the Outaouais region by Friday afternoon, including 7,700 in the MRC des Collines de l'Outaouais and 2,800 in the Pontiac region.
