Thrill ride malfunctions at popular music festival, leaving riders stuck upside down

Festivalgoers at a major music event found themselves in a heart-stopping situation after a popular amusement ride suddenly shut down, leaving several people stranded upside down in the air. The incident happened early Thursday morning at Boardmasters, a surf and music festival held annually in Cornwall, England. According to video captured by attendees and a statement from the event's organizers, the Apollo 13 ride suffered a brief power failure around 1 a.m. Eyewitness video circulated on TikTok showing riders suspended high above the ground, unable to move for roughly 20 minutes. One TikTok user who filmed the scene called it "mad," while another joked about the wind potentially shifting the ride mid-suspension. Another user who claimed to be on the ride said "it was just freezing cold." The Apollo 13 ride, which travels to festivals and fairs across the UK, is named after NASA's ill-fated 1970 space mission, when an oxygen tank in the spacecraft's Service Module exploded. The attraction features a rotating arm and seats up to eight people, four on each end, swinging riders as high as 180 feet into the air. During the malfunction, up to four people were reportedly stuck in an inverted position. Despite the dramatic visuals, organizers insist that safety protocols worked exactly as intended. "As a safety precaution, the ride automatically halted with people on board," a Boardmasters spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News Digital. "The ride operator immediately responded and safely assisted all guests from the ride within 20 minutes." "At no point were guests in any danger," the statement continued. "The ride has since undergone a full safety check and resumed normal operation." The Apollo 13 ride launched in 2024, and its operators regularly post updates and behind-the-scenes maintenance work on its official Facebook page. A post from April outlined the rigorous checks performed before each event, including gear inspections, lighting fixes and greasing of pivot points. The four-day festival is set to conclude on Sunday, August 10. Stepheny Price is a writer for Fox News Digital and Fox Business. What to do if you come across a stranded marine animal

Tonya Wimmer, executive director of MARS, discusses what people should do if they find a stranded marine animal on a Maritime beach. With the high heat across the Maritimes, many people are hitting the beaches, but in recent weeks that's also come with several reports of marine animals that have become stranded. On Thursday, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) alongside the Marine Animal Response Society (MARS) helped free a pilot whale that had become stuck in a bank on the Sydney River. 'It found itself way back in the Sydney River and had been there for a day or so and Fisheries and Oceans tried to encourage it to go back up the river but that didn't work so (Thursday) we were en route aiming to get there and work with DFO, they were able to get their hands on it and get it into what's called a whale rescue pontoon and then we worked together to take it as far out as we could and release it,' said MARS executive director Tonya Wimmer in an interview with CTV's Jesse Thomas. stranded dolphins Dolphins are pictured, trapped in the mud in the aboiteau in Canning, N.S., on Aug. 3, 2025. (Source: Facebook/The Valley Eye Photography) The rescue was not the first that week either, as a group of dolphins had also become stuck near Canning, N.S., on Sunday. 'That one was particularly challenging because it was a group of, in the end it was 13 Atlantic white-sided dolphins, that found themselves way up on the rivers in the back of the Minas Basin. Anyone who's in the area knows about those big tides in the Bay of Fundy and especially in this area it's an area filled with thick, seepy mud and a really deep incline down to where these dolphins were,' said Wimmer, adding that animal rescues are fairly common during the summer months. 'The other thing is we have more people out on water, on beaches and they also have access to things like cameras on their phones and things like social media so word gets out pretty quick,' she said. (Source: Facebook/The Valley Eye Photography) While many people may feel the urge to go help if they see a stranded marine animal, Wimmer says people shouldn't intervene as it can be dangerous. Instead she recommends calling MARS. 'The big thing is really that people do make that phone call because the reality of what we're dealing with are animals that are in unpredictable situations and sometimes they're also in very dangerous situations, so we just don't want people to put themselves in harm's way or do things that may harm the animal.' MARS operates a toll-free hotline to report any stranded animals at 1-866-567-6277. For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page

She Made a List. The Ancestors Confirmed.

On Sept. 2, 2023, Jessica Sara Assaf grabbed her bags and left the Burning Man camp in the Nevada desert on foot after heavy rain stranded thousands of attendees there. 'I had this feeling that I needed to get back to my love,' said Ms. Assaf, referring to Dr. Dean William Prince, whom she had met two weeks earlier. 'Some people believe that gut feeling is your ancestors. The inner voice is so strong when you listen to it.' She walked five miles barefoot through the mud until she reached a pickup point for a shuttle to Reno, Nev. 'I kept saying the Jews have done harder things,' said Ms. Assaf, who is Jewish. Before heading to the airport, she stopped at Walmart to buy shoes. When she landed in Los Angeles, Dr. Prince picked her up from the airport and the two immediately began living together. At first, they stayed in hotels and Airbnbs that they rented for short periods. Then, that November, they moved into a rental apartment in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles. 'I couldn't get enough of her,' said Dr. Prince, a general surgeon with San Fernando Valley Cancer Center who practices at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in the Van Nuys section of Los Angeles. 'There's just so much to know about this person. How can I get it all as fast as I can? I was 35, and you go through so much from a dating standpoint, so you know what you want at that age. I wasn't looking to play games.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
