2-year-old hit by stray bullet Saturday night while watching fireworks
A two-year-old watching fireworks was shot by a stray bullet following a clash among juveniles in an eastside Detroit park on Saturday night, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison told members of the media in a livestreamed press conference. The toddler sustained minimal injuries and will survive, Bettison said. He said that during "some type of altercation" among juveniles a block away at a park July 5, shots were fired and struck the toddler. Saying he was "appalled" and "upset" by the incident, Bettison pledged to step up its enforcement of the city's curfew. The curfew prohibits children aged 15 and under to be out without an adult between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., and prohibits teens ages 16 and 17 to be out unsupervised from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. More: 2 suspects charged in fatal shooting at Detroit's Skinner Playfield "Just the fact that we have a lot of unsupervised juveniles at a park, and understand that it's the holiday weekend, understand that folks are watching fireworks, but at the same time parents still have the responsibility to know where their children are and that they are supervised," he said. Bettison said the department has detained two persons of interests in the incident, though details were still preliminary at the time of the news conference. 2-year-old boy injured after hit by stray bullet on Detroit's east side
Detroit police say a 2-year-old boy was hurt after being struck by a stray bullet while sitting in front of his home with family Saturday night. The incident happened at about 11:50 p.m., July 5, in the 8000 block of Marion Avenue. Police Chief Todd Bettison says a group of juveniles was at a park about a block away from the home when an altercation occurred at the park and shots were fired. Bettison says the child and his family were watching fireworks when a stray bullet struck him from a block away. He says the child is in temporary serious condition and is expected to survive. Police detained two juveniles, who are considered persons of interest, according to Bettison. His injuries are considered minimal. Bettison says the department will be stepping up its curfew enforcement. "I'm appalled by it, upset by it, and as a result, this department will definitely be stepping up our efforts tremendously when it comes to curfew violations," the chief said. "Just the fact that we have a lot of unsupervised juveniles at a park ... I understand it's the holiday weekend, I understand that folks are out watching fireworks, but at the same time, parents still have the responsibility to ensure they know where their children are and that they are supervised." The investigation is ongoing. Last week, Bettison said the department would be making changes after a string of recent shooting incidents involving youth. In one of those incidents, a 4-year-old boy was killed after shots were fired at Skinner Playfield on June 27. An 18-year-old was also killed and a 17-year-old was injured in that shooting. Two teens, Brandon Lee Ware, 18, and William McKinley Wheeler, 19, were charged in connection with the deadly shooting. They are each charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of assault with intent to murder, two counts of discharge from a vehicle causing death, one count of discharge from a vehicle causing serious injury and five counts of felony firearm.

Connecticut man gets 33 years in prison for stray-bullet killing of Olympian's mother
A Connecticut man was sentenced to 33 years in prison on Tuesday for the stray-bullet killing of a Puerto Rican Olympic athlete's mother. Jasper Greene, 23, of New Haven, was one of three men charged in the death of Mabel Martinez Antongiorgi on April 9, 2022. The 56-year-old woman was sewing in her home in Waterbury, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) southwest of Hartford, when a bullet flew through a wall and hit her in the head. Martinez Antongiorgi's daughter, Yarimar Mercado Martinez, competed for the family's native Puerto Rico in rifle shooting at the Olympics in 2016, 2021 and 2024. She was in Brazil for another competition when her mother was killed. Greene pleaded guilty to murder in February. His lawyer did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment after Tuesday's sentencing in Waterbury Superior Court. According to court testimony, the fatal shooting stemmed from a dispute that one of the suspects, Franklin Robinson, had with a man who said hello to his girlfriend. Robinson, Greene and another man shot up a car parked on Martinez Antongiorgi's street, thinking the man was inside it. A bullet went into Martinez Antongiorgi's home. Another bystander was wounded but survived. A jury convicted Robinson of murder and other charges in 2023 and he was later sentenced to 90 years in prison. The third suspect, Levi Brock, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges in the case, including murder, and awaits trial. At the time of her mother's death, Mercado Martinez lamented in social media posts that she 'couldn't even say goodbye.' 'Why you? Why this way?' she wrote. 'You were just sitting in your little house sewing, as you always did.' Martinez Antongiorgi and her husband of over 30 years, John Luis Mercado, moved to Waterbury from Puerto Rico a few years after the U.S. territory endured 2017's devastating Hurricane Maria. At the time of her death, they had set a date to renew their wedding vows, their daughter wrote at the time.
