Decoding Summer Dressing—On the Podcast: Silk Scarves, Flip-Flops, and Grown Women in Baby Tees

It's funny. No matter how long we have been on this earth, whether 20 years or 40 years or more, getting dressed when it's brutally hot and/or humid outside is daunting every time summer rolls around. On this week's edition of The Run-Through, Nicole Phelps is joined by Vogue Runway's Laia Garcia-Furtado, who writes the weekly style advice column 'Addressed,' and Vogue fashion writer Hannah Jackson to discuss summer dressing. They cover both practical topics (what kind of hand-held fan is the best?) and more controversial ones (shirtless men and flip-flops in the city), and also touch upon the season's hottest trends, from Gen Z girlies in their short-jorts and cowboy boots to swimsuits as streetwear and the multi-purpose power of a silk scarf. Hey, if fashion It-boy Timothée Chalamet and Dries Van Noten's Julian Klausner are both endorsing the look, we are, too. Another developing summer dressing trend? Dressing like a haunted doll—what's that all about? Tune in to find out.

It's the Summer of Subverted Polka Dots

Every summer, certain breakout fashion trends emerge—as though we all collectively got the same memo that a certain print or shoe is in. These past few weeks, the streets have been taken over by polka dots: they're everywhere! Celebrities such as Hailey Bieber, Olivia Rodrigo, and Rihanna have all been embracing the retro pattern in fresh, new ways. (They were also a huge trend of the resort 2026 season.) But while dotted designs can lean 1920s, the era they became popularized, the new styling approach is all about subverting that sweetness—by plastering dots on unexpected pieces like ties, shorts, and even capri leggings. Call it a cooler, grungier take on polka dot dressing; the 2025 way of wearing the pattern is all about offsetting it with more downtown-worthy pieces. Earlier this week, Rihanna offered a masterclass in the trend: The star dined at Giorgio Baldi in an oversized ERL suit and sheer Fenty bra, punctuating the look with a big polka-dotted tie, left undone around her neck. It struck the right balance of classic and contemporary. Ditto for Olivia Rodrigo, who stepped out in New York this summer wearing a pair of micro polka-dotted shorts. Styled with a blank tank and leather biker boots? She made polka dots worthy of a pop-punk star.

This is the one item that will get you through August

School's out for summer — but for those who aren't beach bound, the matter of summer attire that extends beyond a bikini continues to require our engagement. It's bad enough you've got to work for the entirety of August, so what to wear? We pride ourselves on focusing on solutions not problems here on the Style fashion desk, which is why we're drawing your attention to the billowy white skirt: your one-suits-all clothing companion. The item you need to see you through stuffy commutes, overly air-conned meetings, summery soirées and everything in between, this is the foundation on which your August can be built. Despite the sales stock filling stores right now, the white skirt remains a hot purchase. M&S has a lovely cotton one. See also Arket for its Nineties-inspired model, and Mango has a version with just the right amount of swish. The white skirt is a big hit at the luxury end of the market too. We love Toteme's take, with a front split and a balloony silhouette. • Read more fashion advice and style inspiration from our experts Feeding directly into this summer's big monochrome moment (do keep up: wearing black and white is an obsession for fashion purists right now), this skirt looks best teamed with classics. A simple singlet vest will do just fine. Those who like a bit more structure should try it with a waistcoat. On the matter of footwear, flat sandals are your friends here. Add a jacket if it's chilly; a slouchy blazer is a good plan. We also love an oversized shirt with a relaxed shape. It's summertime and the living is easy — this is the look to match the mood.
