119th annual Arapahoe County Fair kicks off this weekend in Colorado

The smell of kettle corn, the sound of rodeo fans cheering, and the sight of kids carrying giant stuffed animals can only mean one thing: the Arapahoe County Fair is back. Now in its 119th year, the Arapahoe County Fair has grown from a small agricultural gathering in the early 1900s to one of Colorado's most popular summertime traditions. Originally a showcase for local ranchers and farmers, the fair has expanded to feature everything from unlimited carnival rides and rodeo events to pig races and mutton bustin'. This year, organizers are introducing several new attractions, including a silent disco, axe throwing, BMX stunt shows, Polynesian fire dancers, and gel blasters. "This is something that provides an opportunity to bring the community together," said Michael Roy, Environmental Health Specialist with Arapahoe County Public Health. "People from all walks of life can come to the fair and find something they all have in common. Whether it's enjoying food, riding with family, or seeing the livestock. It really is something that can make us all better and closer as a community," Roy said. Public health inspectors will be on-site all weekend to ensure food safety. They are checking temperatures, safe handling practices, and proper refrigeration to prevent foodborne illnesses, which often spike during summer festivals. Attendees can also help by washing their hands after petting animals or riding attractions and avoiding pacifiers, bottles or toys that children might put in their mouths while on the fairgrounds. "We want to make sure that's how it stays, and nobody leaves this experience or this fair with a foodborne illness or anything like that. Or Anything that would really ruin their day out here in the County Fair," Roy said. The fair runs through Sunday. It opens Thursday at 4 p.m. and closes at midnight, then opens at 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday and closes at midnight. On Sunday, gates open at 11 a.m. and close at 10:30 p.m. General admission is $28, and children under 36 inches tall get in free.

Visitors to Japanese valley cool down with water-streamed noodles

People in Japan's western prefecture of Okayama have beaten the sweltering heat by a unique way -- savoring cold noodles which flow down chutes in water. A restaurant in the city of Maniwa offers the summer culinary tradition called "nagashi-somen." Customers use chopsticks to scoop up thin noodles from slides, dunk them into broth and slurp them up. The eatery, with a history of more than four decades, sits in the Yamanori Valley, a popular summer retreat. It began this year's business on Saturday. A 6-year-old girl who had the experience for the first time said it was fun and that she wants to try it again. Her mother said it was a good start to the summer as she loves the noodles.

Pope Leo to escape Rome's summer heat with July stay at Castel Gandolfo

VATICAN CITY, June 17 (Reuters) - As temperatures in Rome swelter this month, reaching more than 35 degrees Celsius (95°F) under the hot Mediterranean sun, Pope Leo has decided to leave town. The pontiff will spend July 6 to 20 about an hour's drive south in Castel Gandolfo, a small hamlet on Lake Albano, the Vatican said on Tuesday. Leo, elected pope on May 8 to replace the late Pope Francis, will also return to the lakeshore for at least one weekend in August, it said. All of Leo's public and private audiences have been suspended from July 2 through July 23, the Vatican said, as was usual under Francis, to allow the pontiff a period of rest. They will restart on July 30. By going to Castel Gandolfo, Leo is restarting a summer tradition that was broken by Francis. Dozens of popes over centuries have spent the summer months at Lake Albano, where temperatures are usually about ten degrees cooler than Rome, but Francis preferred to stay in his air-conditioned Vatican residence. The Vatican has owned a papal palace and surrounding grounds in Castel Gandolfo since 1596. Spanning 55 hectares, the property includes official apartments, elaborate Renaissance-style gardens, a forest and a working dairy farm. Francis, who shunned most of the trappings of the papacy, had the official papal palace turned into a museum. Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni told Reuters the pope would not stay at the palace, which will remain a museum, and will instead stay on another Vatican property. Leo will return to Castel Gandolfo for the weekend of August 15 to 17. August 15, a Catholic feast day to celebrate Mary, the Mother of God, is an Italian public holiday. Many Italians spend that day, and much of August, at the beach.
