The incident occurred at Taiohae Bay in Nuku Hiva, an island in French Polynesia, on Friday, July 25, according to the Agence France-Presse (APF), per Macau Business and 24 News. The young boy was playing in the water with about 10 other children when he was bitten on his right forearm and left hand, as well as one of his calves, which was torn off, The Sun reported. French Polynesia is home to over 30 shark species, according to Forbes. A recent study that surveyed over 60 years of shark bites in the region found that many attacks were triggered by human behaviors, like spearfishing and harpooning, and were often a defensive response, the outlet Bay is a popular spot for local fishermen, as well as cruise ships and sailboats, according to a Nuku Hiva tourism site. Malcolm-Jamal Warner Drowning: Person Who Tried to Save Actor's Life Discharged from Hospital
Warner died Sunday, July 20, while swimming on a family vacation in Costa Rica More information is surfacing on the condition of the other person who was involved in the incident that ultimately took Malcolm-Jamal Warner's life. The person was identified as a 29-year-old man from Nicaragua, according to Dr. Mauricio Solano Corella, Medical Director for the Talamanca Health Area. It was again confirmed that he was in the water trying to help Warner, who the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) previously told PEOPLE was "swept away by a current." The man was taken to a local hospital in "critical condition," but has since been discharged. After receiving treatment from the Costa Rican Red Cross and at a local hospital, the second victim made a full recovery. The man was "treated, found to be stable and was discharged without complications," Dr. Corella told PEOPLE in a statement. Warner, best known for his role as Theo on , drowned on Sunday, July 20, while swimming during a family trip to Costa Rica. In the wake of the actor's tragic death at the age of 54, the Costa Rican Red Cross told PEOPLE a second person was in critical condition after being taken to the hospital from the same incident. The Costa Rican Red Cross said it responded to a "water-related" incident at Playa Grande in Cahutia, Limón, at around 2:10 p.m. local time on Sunday. Three ambulances were sent to the scene, where they "attended" to two adult male patients. While the Costa Rican Red Cross declared Warner dead at the scene after 20 minutes of CPR, the second individual was taken to a local clinic in Limón for treatment. The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) told PEOPLE in a statement on Tuesday, July 22, that the other person was trying to save Warner. An OIJ spokesperson exclusively confirmed to PEOPLE that the second victim "came in [the water] to help Mr. Warner." The organization said that Warner "was apparently swept away by a current" and was "rescued by bystanders," but was ultimately "declared lifeless" on the shore. No information regarding the identity of the second victim has been shared, but the OIJ spokesperson confirmed they had no personal connection to Warner. An investigation is still ongoing, per authorities. Warner's official cause of death was confirmed on July 22 after an autopsy was performed earlier that day. The OIJ confirmed that Warner died from accidental asphyxiation by submersion. The organization said Warner's body was formally identified by Costa Rican National Police and will be "removed from the Judicial Morgue by a funeral service company hired and authorized by Mr. Warner's family." Tipperary community fundraises following death of Freya Tobin (12) in swimming accident
A Co Tipperary community is rallying around the family of 12-year-old Freya Tobin, who died after getting into swimming difficulties in the river Suir last Friday, to help with funeral costs. Freya, from Newcastle, Co Tipperary, had been in the water with her friend along the Suir Blueway at around 4.20pm. Advertisement It is understood that Freya, who died, along with another friend, both got into difficulty swimming around the same time. The dead girl's friend managed to swim to safety and raise the alarm. A number of local boys heard the screams of the girls and dived into the water to help. The spot where the girls were swimming is known to have strong currents. In a multi-agency response, Gardaí, National Ambulance Service personnel and firefighters from Clonmel Fire Station's swift water rescue team attended the scene. Freya was transferred to Cork University Hospital (CUH) by the Irish Coast Guard Air and Sea Rescue 117 helicopter after being recovered from the water at around 4.45pm. The former sixth-class student of Scoil Mhuire Caisleán Nua National School died a short time later. The deceased girl's friend, who managed to swim to safety, was taken to South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel for treatment. Advertisement The fundraiser on The Funeral of Freya Tobin , details how their community has been affected by the 'devastating event' and describes Freya as the 'kindest, most gentle soul to grace the community of Newcastle' and how her death leaves behind a 'wave of deep sorrow and regret'. Fundraising organisers added that their lives 'drastically' changed forever. 'What should have been another day of summer holidays fun turned into an unimaginable nightmare. In what can only be described as a tragic and utterly devastating event, our beloved Freya drowned in the River Suir while swimming with her dear friend Emily,' they continued. 'There wasn't a single person who did not know her name, nor whom she wouldn't have said hello to when passing through the village. She touched the hearts of every single person that had the pleasure of knowing her, and you couldn't help but leave her company with a smile on your face. The biggest smile of all being on the face of her biggest admirer, her little brother Grayson.' Advertisement They describe how Freya made people laugh 'uncontrollably' throughout the years with her sense of humour. The organisers continued: 'You couldn't possibly be a friend to her mother, Shannen, auntie Amber, uncle Dylan, without being Freya's friend also. Her presence was magnetic, and this is shown by just how many friends she has made for herself in our community and beyond. It's safe to say she had all of us wrapped around her finger, but particularly, her nanny Catríona and grandad OJ. 'Her death leaves behind a wave of deep sorrow and regret. The kind that such a small community will never truly recover from. In light of this, we want to come together as a community and help the Tobin family cover the costs of Freya's funeral. I hope we can rally together and give Shannen one less thing to worry about in these horrifically, troubling times'. The community hopes to raise €12,000, and at the time of writing the fundraiser has raised over €14,000. Her funeral arrangements are yet to be announced. Freya is survived by her mother Shannen, and her younger brother, Grayson.

New York man missing after swimming in Maryland reservoir, officials say
A New York man is reportedly missing after he went swimming in a Maryland reservoir, according to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. The search continued Friday evening for the young man who disappeared in Liberty Reservoir while swimming with friends on Thursday, July 3. "It's heartbreaking," said kayaker Rich Fairhurst. "We heard about it this morning, and we weren't sure if the lake was going to be open, but we came anyway. And we saw the search and rescue team starting back up today." Search for missing swimmer Crews from multiple agencies were out until dark on Thursday night, searching for the man after his friends called for help. "He and three friends were swimming, they went down and jumped in the water. They swam across to an island, and about halfway across, this gentleman, a 20-year-old Hispanic male, he started to go underwater," said Lt. Brandon Holland with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. "He was last seen about halfway across." Lt. Holland said the man is from Queens, New York, but was visiting friends in Pikesville, Maryland, when the incident occurred. According to Lt. Holland, crews are likely looking at a recovery mission. "It is popular for teens and young adults to come down here and want to swim, but it is illegal. It can go from three feet deep to about 70 feet deep is where we think he was last seen," Lt. Holland said. "So, it is not safe, and again, it is illegal." Carroll County deputies said the young man's three friends have been cooperative in the investigation. No charges or citations have been filed. Water safety reminder The incident serves as a reminder to obey signs when visiting bodies of water, especially during the summer, and to be careful, stay sober and wear a life vest when on the water. "We usually wear life vests, and we have a whistle on," said boater Willow Timko. "There is always a big possibility that it might not happen, but there's a small possibility that something bad could happen."
