5 Million Above-Ground Pools Recalled After Deaths of 9 Kids

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of about five million above-ground swimming pools with potentially dangerous compression straps. "These straps wrap around the pool on the outside of the supporting poles, and may create a foothold, allowing a child to access the pool and drown," said the commission on Monday, July 21, in a description of the recall, which covers pools made by Bestway, Intex and Polygroup. "Children can still gain access to the pools using these footholds even if the ladder is removed," the CPSC said, noting the recalled pools are 48 inches or taller. The commission believes nine children, ages 22 months to 3 years old, have drowned after getting into pools using the footholds. The fatal incidents occurred in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin and Missouri from 2007 to 2022. "CPSC is also aware of three other incidents in 2011 and 2012 where children who gained access to the recalled pools were reported to have previously used the compression strap to gain entry to the pool," the commission said. The recalled pools have been sold across the country since 2002 at stores like Walmart, Target, Sears, Lowe's, Kmart, Toys "R" Us, Sam's Club, The Home Depot, Big Lots, Costco, BJ's and elsewhere. They were also sold online at and among other websites. The pools were manufactured in China and varied in price from $400 to over $1,000, the CPSC said. About 266,000 pools were also sold in Canada. Those impacted by the recall are encouraged to contact Bestway, Intex or Polygroup to receive a free repair kit that includes a rope to attach to the vertical support poles at the ground level around the pool. "The rope will maintain the structural integrity of the pool (a function previously served by the compression strap)," the CPSC said. "Consumers should first secure the repair and then cut and remove the compression strap from the pool." Read the original article on People

Over 5.2 million pools sold across the US and Canada are under recall after reports of nine deaths

More than 5.2 million aboveground swimming pools sold across the US and Canada over the last two decades are being recalled after nine drowning deaths were reported. The recall covers a range of Bestway, Intex Recreation and Polygroup pools that were sold by major retailers as far back as 2002. According to Monday notices published by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, these pools have compression straps running along the outside of the product — which 'may create a foothold' for small children and allow them to access the water unattended. That can pose a serious drowning risk, the safety regulatory warn. To date, the CPSC believes nine children across the US have drowned after gaining access to these now-recalled pools in this way. Those deaths occurred between 2007 and 2022, involving children between the ages of 22 months and 3 years old. No additional fatalities have been reported in Canada. Consumers in possession of these pools are urged to immediately contact Bestway, Intex and/or Polygroup to receive a free repair kit — which will consist of a rope to replace the compression strap. Owners of these pools should otherwise ensure that small children cannot access the pool without supervision, regulators note — and could alternatively drain the pool until the repair is made. All of the pools being recalled are 48 inches or taller — and can be identified by brand and model names listed on both the CPSC and Health Canada's recall notices. Sales of the pools ranged by model and location, but date as far back to 2002 and as recently as 2025. About 5 million of these now-recalled pools were sold across the US — including both online and in-stores at major retailers like Walmart, Target, Lowe's, Costco and Amazon. Another 266,000 were sold in Canada.

5 million above-ground pools recalled, including in Canada

Health Canada has issued a recall notice for more than 260,000 above-ground swimming pools sold in Canada since the early 2000s after nine kids drowned in the United States. Another five million pools are under a recall advisory in the U.S. The notices cover a range of Bestway, Intex Recreation and Polygroup pools sold by major retailers as far back as 2002. Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) say the pools have compression straps running along the outside of the product that "may create a foothold" for small children and allow them to access the water unattended. That can pose a serious drowning risk, the regulators warn, and they're asking consumers to contact the companies for a repair. No reports of injuries in Canada To date, the CPSC believes at least nine children across the U.S. have drowned after gaining access to these now-recalled pools in this way. Those deaths occurred between 2007 and 2022, involving children between the ages of 22 months and three years old. Health Canada said in its recall that the pool companies have not received any reports of incidents or injuries in Canada. All of the pools being recalled are 48 inches (122 centimetres) or taller — and can be identified by brand and model names listed on both the CPSC's and Health Canada's recall notices. Sales of the pools ranged by model and location, but date as far back to 2002 and as recently as 2025. About five million of these now-recalled pools were sold across the U.S. — including both online and in-stores at major retailers like Walmart, Target, Lowe's, Costco and Amazon. Another 266,000 were sold in Canada.
