Tunisia calls for redefining development priorities in Arab world, boosting inter-Arab trade

Tunis - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti, headed the Tunisian delegation participating in the 5th Arab Economic and Social Development Summit held in Baghdad on Saturday. He delivered a speech on behalf of President Kais Saied, emphasising Tunisia's commitment to addressing development challenges as the most effective means to counter security and social threats. According to a Foreign Ministry statement, Tunisia called for redefining development priorities in the Arab world through a shared, innovative vision centered on the Arab citizen and aimed at meeting their economic and social needs. It stressed the need to bridge developmental, knowledge, and technological gaps among Arab nations and boost intra-Arab trade, which remains below potential at just 13% of total Arab foreign trade. Tunisia also underscored the importance of developing effective strategies to enhance food security, mitigate water scarcity, and address environmental risks. It also urged support for infrastructure, transport, electricity, and smart city projects, alongside advancing the Greater Arab Free Trade Area and transitioning to an Arab Customs Union to strengthen national economies. Highlighting the importance of reform, governance, and equitable wealth distribution, Tunisia asserted that true development requires social justice, including economic empowerment and social protection for vulnerable groups. The country reaffirmed its commitment to regional programmes for women's economic and social empowerment, enhancing women's participation in labour markets and decision-making and creating legislative environments that promote equality. Tunisia also said it was looking forward to active Arab participation in the preparatory regional meeting for the 2nd World Summit for Social Development, hosted in Tunis on June 30 and July 1, 2025. It pledged support for initiatives serving Arab peoples' interests and called for stronger partnerships between Arab states and regional/international blocs. It urged the practical implementation of summit recommendations to ensure tangible progress. Minister Nafti also led Tunisia's delegation at the 34th Ordinary Arab Summit, held concurrently in Baghdad. © Tap 2022 Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

France summons cryptocurrency businesses after kidnappings

French interior minister Bruno Retailleau will meet with cryptocurrency professionals to discuss how to prevent future kidnappings. (AFP pic) PARIS : The French interior minister said today he will meet with cryptocurrency professionals to discuss how to prevent future kidnappings for ransom following several such high-profile cases in France. Bruno Retailleau's invitation comes a day after the latest violent kidnapping attempt in broad daylight in Paris, and a series of previous such incidents. 'I will assemble businesspeople working in cryptocurrencies, and we have a few of those in France, at the interior ministry to work with them on their security,' Retailleau told the Europe 1/CNews broadcaster, 'and so that they become aware of the risks'. Yesterday, the daughter and grandson of a French cryptocurrency entrepreneur narrowly escaped a kidnapping attempt by armed men in Paris. Four masked men attacked a couple and their child in the French capital's 11th district, police sources told AFP. All three escaped with light injuries and were taken to hospital. The woman is the daughter of the CEO and co-founder of Paymium, a French cryptocurrency exchange platform. Yesterday's events follow the abduction in January of French crypto boss David Balland and his partner. Balland, co-founder of the Ledger crypto firm, had his finger cut off by the kidnappers. At least nine suspects have since been detained, including the alleged mastermind. In May, attackers kidnapped a man to force his crypto-millionaire son to pay a ransom. Police arrested seven people after a raid to free the man. 'We must jointly take measures to protect them,' Retailleau said of crypto businesspeople and their families today. 'But we will also find the perpetrators wherever they may be, perhaps even abroad,' he said. The interior ministry meeting is scheduled for Friday, officials said.

France faces calls to bolster security for crypto firms after kidnappings

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said he would meet industry professionals to discuss how to prevent future kidnappings. Paymium urged the authorities "to immediately adopt measures to reinforce the protection of collaborators of companies in the cryptocurrency ecosystem". French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said he would meet industry professionals later this week to discuss how to prevent future kidnappings and raise risk awareness. "I will assemble businesspeople working in cryptocurrencies, and we have a few of those in France, at the interior ministry to work with them on their security," Retailleau told the Europe 1/CNews broadcaster,. On Wednesday, the company demanded "immediate protection" against such attacks and welcomed the French minister's initiative. Paymium, which said it was "extremely saddened" by the incident, added that "media and politicians" had an important role to play in how information about cryptocurrency is handled. "Misconceptions can easily spread, ranging from supposed wealth to criminal fantasies, unfortunately contributing to fueling misinformation and to creating a climate of insecurity," it said in a statement. Macron, new German Chancellor Merz pledge stronger Franco-German ties

French President Emmanuel Macron and Germany's new chancellor, Friedrich Merz, have agreed to strengthen cooperation to play a leadership role in helping Europe deal with threats from Russia and other challenges. Merz, who took office on Tuesday, visited France on his first trip abroad as the new German leader the following day. Following their talks, Merz told reporters that Europe has enormous challenges and will only be able to meet them if France and Germany stand even more closely together than in the past. Macron said European security is their most important mission. He pointed to the need to boost defense cooperation and investment, including expanding weapons development. He also disclosed plans to set up a joint defense and security council to meet regularly. Germany attaches utmost importance to its ties with its neighbor, France. The two superpowers in Europe have been viewed as playing a pivotal role in shaping the policies, among other matters, of the European Union. But no such alliance seemed apparent between Merz's predecessor, Olaf Scholz, and Macron. Merz will visit Poland later on Wednesday to further pursue active diplomacy in what appears to be an attempt to show how Germany is reshaping itself following political stagnation in the country.
