JD Vance Says Wife Usha Is ‘Super Patient' With Their Kids. Him, Not So Much.
Every parent has to deal with their child's tantrums at some point, but it's a little different when you're as visible as the vice president of the United States. JD Vance admitted his patience as a parent can run thin on a Monday podcast episode hosted by Katie Miller, wife of Donald Trump's White House deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller. After Miller asked Vance about his parenting, the veep freely admitted that his wife, Usha, seems to handle dealing with their three kids, ages 8, 5 and 3, better than he does. 'Usha and I handle it very differently,' Vance said before relating a story about a woman they met in an airport who said she was a child therapist and praised his wife for the way she interacted with their son in public. 'It is amazing,' Vance conceded. 'She's super patient. She'll try to reason with them.' Vance's own parenting style seems to involve less patience and more four-letter words, however. 'If they have a tantrum in a public place, I immediately grab them, take them to the bathroom and say, 'You got to cut that shit out,'' he said. This isn't the first time Vance has suggested he yells at his kids. Last August on the 'Full Send Podcast,' he described cursing at his oldest child, who wanted to talk about Pokémon while he was on the phone with Donald Trump. 'He's going through a Pokémon phase ... he's really into it. So he's trying to talk to me about Pikachu, and I'm on the phone with Donald Trump. And I'm like, 'Son, shut the hell up for 30 seconds about Pikachu.'' 'This is the most important phone call of my life. Please just let me take this phone call,' Vance recalled saying. Last October, Vance was mocked for noting that his wife has 'got three kids,' seeming to forget they are also his. During the interview with Miller, Vance admitted that his kids sometimes attempt to use his high profile against him. 'My kids, they are very judgmental of our parenting in public, and I think they know that there's always cameras around, so they use that as an opportunity to say, 'Oh, Dad should … have child protective services called because he didn't give me two scoops of ice cream last night.'' "Toddlerhood doesn't have to feel so hard and overwhelming," said Devon. "I wrote Transforming Toddlerhood to be the comprehensive, easy-to-implement guide parents wish came with their toddler—packed with practical tools and grounded in child development—so they can confidently handle tantrums, power struggles, and big feelings while raising resilient, emotionally healthy kids . . . and actually enjoy these precious years." Matt Baugher, SVP at HarperCollins and publisher of Harper Horizon said, "I can honestly say that I've never devoured a proposal as quickly as I did for Devon Kuntzman's book. As a publisher, I couldn't wait to sign her to our team. As the parent of a toddler, I couldn't wait for the rest of the book to be written so I could personally put it into practice. It's that good, and every reader will be eternally grateful for having a copy." Ultimately, Transforming Toddlerhood is about more than a phase to "get through"—it's a chance to build the foundation for a resilient and emotionally healthy future. It's about rediscovering the magic of these early years, building a deeper bond with your child, and experiencing the joy and confidence that comes from knowing you've got the tools to handle whatever toddlerhood throws your way, all while working in harmony with your child's natural development. Transforming Toddlerhood will teach readers how to: Have practical solutions for everyday challenges using positive, effective, developmentally appropriate discipline tools. Set realistic expectations for their toddler's behavior. Feel more confident and empowered, even when faced with challenging behaviors like hitting and tantrums. Meet their child's needs without their boundaries being crossed, and set limits and follow through, even if their toddler says no. Understand toddler communication and behavior on a deeper level. Support their toddler in coping with the excitement and challenges of new experiences. End the battle of wills and experience less frustration and more cooperation.
