Heinz renames tartare dip ‘fish and chips sauce'

Heinz has released a new 'fish and chips sauce' in a rebranding of the classic condiment tartare sauce. The food giant has told consumers to think of its new sauce as 'tartare 2.0', with the packaging describing the contents as 'tartare sauce' and listing ingredients as including gherkins, dill, salt, parsley and mustard. Tartare sauce is traditionally made of mayonnaise, chopped gherkins, capers, and herbs such as tarragon and dill. It is considered a classic accompaniment to seafood dishes, including fish and chips. Heinz described its new product as a 'fresh and herby condiment' that was 'poised to become Britain's new go-to pairing for fish dinners – and, of course, the nation's beloved dish, fish and chips'. It went on: 'If tartare is the OG fish condiment, then think of Heinz fish and chips sauce as tartare 2.0 – 2025's hot new upgrade... Love tartare? You'll be obsessed. Never tried it? Consider this your tasty gateway to next-level fish and chips.' Britons eating more fish Heinz said that its own research suggested Britons were eating more fish – up almost 5 per cent year on year – with 37 per cent of these occasions being fish and chip meals. It found that 81 per cent of Britons used various sauces with the dish, with 66 per cent using ketchup, 50 per cent mayonnaise and 45 per cent tartare sauce. Some 90 per cent of people ages 18 to 34 expressed an interest in a 'brand new' sauce for fish, the brand said. Thiago Rapp, the director of taste elevation at Heinz, said: 'At Heinz, we're always exploring bold and exciting flavours, inspired by the latest food trends and what people across the nation are really craving. 'And when it comes to British classics, nothing quite compares to fish and chips. It's a national treasure, whether enjoyed as a seaside staple, a proper chippy tea on a Friday, or a comforting midweek meal. 'We've created a sauce that pays homage to this beloved British dish, crafted to be the perfect companion for every fish-filled occasion.'

Heinz baffles shoppers by axing popular sauce & giving it a totally different name – but eagle-eyed fans spot MAJOR flaw

HEINZ has baffled shoppers by squeezing out tartare sauce — and bringing in 'Fish and Chips Sauce' to re-plaice it. The move is thought to be an attempt to make the French-style dip appeal to a wider audience. Publicity blurb declares the new sauce provides 'a refreshing twist to every dish'. It was launched yesterday with TikTok star Destiny Harold, known as the Chip Shop Diva. But sharp-eyed Heinz fans called the switch codswallop. They said it is just a rebrand, with both sauces having the same basic ingredients — including capers, dill and parsley. One wrote online: 'Looks like tartare sauce for people who don't know what tartare sauce is.' Another added: 'So, tartare sauce with a different label. Way to go for the creative department.' Heinz's Tartare Sauce was scrapped from supermarkets in 2022 but is still available in some restaurants and online. Its Fish and Chips Sauce sells for £3.40 for a 400g bottle. Last night Heinz insisted: 'While traditional tartare sauce is made with gherkins and capers to create a tangier sauce, our new Fish and Chips sauce blends gherkins, onions, and fragrant herbs to create a herbier, creamier condiment. Think of it as Tartare 2.0!'
