In a statement, United said: 'We've resolved technology issues that had been affecting flights. While we're still experiencing delays, our team is working to restore our normal operations.' The issue came weeks after Alaska Airlines grounded flights for three hours in its second IT outage in just over a year. According to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, the hours-long outage caused ground stops at major United hub airports, including Newark, Denver, Houston, and Chicago. Flight tracking data service, FlightAware showed 34% of United flights had been delayed by the incident as of late Wednesday evening on the US East Coast. United said the issue was with its Unimatic system, which feeds flight data to systems for weight, balance, and tracking. It also said it would cover customer expenses, like hotels, for delays caused by the tech issue. United Airlines on Wednesday said it had suspended flights due to a widespread tech issue, and anticipates additional flight delays in the evening. 'Due to a technology issue, we are holding United mainline flights at their departure airports,' United said in a statement. 'We expect additional flight delays this evening as we work through this issue. Safety is our top priority, and we'll work with our customers to get them to their destinations.' According to the Federal Aviation Administration's website, ground stops had been issued for United Airlines flights at several US airports including its hubs in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Newark and San Francisco. The ground stop does not affect United Express flights, and any flight already in the air will continue to its destination, the airline said. As of Wednesday evening, tracking site FlightAware reported that United had delayed 28%, or 876, of that day's flights. As frustrated passengers took to social media, United apologized for the disruption and assured people their teams were 'working to resolve the widespread system error as quickly as possible'.

Ryanair flight to UK forced to turn around mid-air and make surprise landing after ‘issue' on board
A RYANAIR flight has been forced to perform an emergency landing following an "issue" with the aircraft. Flight FR504 took off from Dublin Airport and was heading to Bristol but crew made the decision to land at Cardiff when crew detected the problem. A spokesperson for Ryanair said: "This flight from Dublin to Bristol (5 Aug) diverted to Cardiff due to a minor tech issue. "The aircraft landed normally at Cardiff Airport and passengers disembarked. "To minimise disruption to passengers, we quickly arranged for alternative transport to bring them to Bristol Airport." The Boeing 737 Max 8 plane took off from Dublin at 3.28pm, but landed in Cardiff shortly after a "general emergency" signal was issued. It is understood that the captain did not declare an emergency onboard, with the flight landing "normally".
