Teen accused of pistol-whipping another at Deltona park; gun linked to car break-ins, deputies say

The Brief A 15-year-old was arrested for pistol-whipping a teen during a fight at Dewey Boster Park. The gun used was stolen during a prior car burglary linked to the same suspect. He now faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated battery and armed burglary. ORLANDO, Fla. - Volusia Sheriff's deputies arrested a 15-year-old boy after he allegedly pistol-whipped another at a Deltona park during an altercation. What we know A 15-year-old boy was arrested by Volusia County Sheriff's deputies after allegedly pistol-whipping another teen during a confrontation at Dewey Boster Park in Deltona on Wednesday, May 28. According to authorities, the victim had been at the park with his girlfriend when a group of teens approached, seeking to fight over a prior school-related dispute. During the altercation, the suspect reportedly pulled a 9mm handgun and struck the victim on the side of the head before engaging in a physical fight. Surveillance footage obtained from the park confirmed details of the altercation. The teen was arrested the following day at his Deltona home. Deputies recovered the firearm — hidden inside a crossbody bag in the garage of a friend's house — and later linked it to a car burglary that occurred weeks earlier. What we don't know Investigators have not yet identified the other teens involved. It's also unclear whether charges will be filed against any additional individuals or how the group confrontation was organized. Authorities have not disclosed whether the suspect has any prior criminal history or whether he will be charged as an adult. The backstory The incident stems from an ongoing conflict that reportedly began at school and spilled into a public setting. The victim told deputies that the confrontation escalated when the suspect and others confronted him at the park. The fight quickly turned violent with the use of a firearm — later determined to be stolen — intensifying the charges. Big picture view The fact that the weapon used was possibly linked to a previous armed car burglary and theft underscores broader issues of stolen guns ending up in the hands of teens. What they're saying The Volusia County Sheriff's Office confirmed the arrest in a statement, emphasizing that detectives "continue to investigate this case, including interviews with other juveniles and a search warrant." Witnesses recall seeing alleged suspect in Maryland neighborhood after Joppatowne High School shooting

Testimony during the trial for a teen accused of carrying out a deadly shooting at a Maryland high school suggests he may have passed the murder weapon off to another classmate. Jaylen Prince, 16, is being charged as an adult for shooting and killing Warrent Grant, 15, at Joppatowne High School in September 2024. During the fourth day of his trial, Friday, the jury heard from witnesses who said Prince ran and hid in a nearby apartment complex after the deadly shooting unfolded in a school bathroom. 2024 Joppatowne High School shooting According to classmates who testified in Prince's trial, the shooting at Joppatowne High was prompted by an argument over a girl. A boy who said he was close friends with Prince testified that the suspected shooter was seen flirting with Grant's girlfriend. He recalled how he relayed a message from Grant to Prince telling him to stay away from the girl. Prince seemed agitated after the interaction, the friend told jurors. Later on that day, Prince and Grant got involved in a fight in the men's bathroom, during which Prince threatened to kill Grant before pulling a gun from his backpack and firing, witnesses said. The weapon used in the shooting has not been found. Witnesses recall seeing Prince after Joppatowne High shooting On Friday, Juan Cortez took the stand and recalled a conversation he overheard from a person in the hallway of his apartment on Riley Court, just across the street from Joppatown High. Cortez said he heard the phrases, "Hurt him," "Shot him," and "I messed up my life." "I was alarmed," Cortez told the jury. "That's not something I typically hear passing my front door." He said he called 911 immediately. Sgt. Gregory Dietz with the Harford County Sheriff's Office responded to that call. His body camera footage was played in court, showing the day that deputies spotted Prince hiding under a stairwell. Dietz recalled that Prince only had a phone and a backpack, but a gun was not found. The jury also heard from John McNamara, who lives on Joppa Farm Road, which backs up to the school. His Ring doorbell camera captured Prince walking through his backyard as he was on the phone. Analyzing Ring doorbell video Harford County Sheriff's Detective Patrick Ross testified about analyzing the Ring video captured by McNamara. Ross said he slowed the video, sped it up and adjusted the pitch. He believes Prince said to the person on the other end of the phone, "Toss that f******* gun in the water, real s***." The prosecution also went through other pieces of video evidence with Det. Ross, including a screenshot of what Ross called direct eye contact between Prince and Grant as Grant went to the bathroom minutes before the shooting. The defense argued that when the video is watched in real time, the two teens couldn't have seen each other for more than a split second before Prince went into the bathroom. Video surveillance also showed Prince interacting with another student outside of the school's entrance after the shooting. The student appeared to reach into Prince's backpack. It is unclear if he took anything from the bag. The state's attorney's office said that the student has not been charged with any crimes.

Bullied teen tells mom if perpetrators are not arrested she'll kill herself

What was intended to be a casual gathering escalated into a confrontation, resulting in her being beaten, slapped, and punched. The mother of the 14-year-old that was filmed being beaten by seven teenagers from Yeoville says her daughter has threatened to take her own life if her bullies don't get arrested. She explained to Drum that they've been having sleepless nights following the terrible ordeal. Her daughter is too traumatised to watch or read anything that has to do with her bullying incident. 'I asked her if she wants to see the video that was shown on TV news and she refused, emphasising that she doesn't want to see anything that is a reminder of that day because it triggers suicidal thoughts in her.' She explained that on the day of the incident two of the alleged perpetrators came to their home asking that her daughter accompany them to go buy food. ' It had been over a year since I last saw them so I was excited and granted my daughter permission to leave with them, little did I know that I was throwing her into the lion's den. Explaining the incident my daughter said they never went to buy food but instead walked to one of the alleged perpetrators home.' She said upon arrival one of the girls said ' let's get to the point of this hook up.' 'My daughter said she was confronted about a conversation she had with two of the girls and that's how the beatings started. She was slapped, punched, kicked and hair pulled to a point that one line from her cornrows was ripped off from her head. I was shattered when she came home crying inconsolable.' Asked about her interaction with the parents of the accused teens, the mother of the victim told Drum that she has no business talking to them. 'Initially I went with my daughter Yeoville SAPS to go and open a case. The police there refused and said we should talk as parents and try to come up with a solution or some form of a compensation. I insisted on having the case opened but the police weren't having it. So I told the parents I want R3000 from each perpetrator but they complained and said it was too much,' the victim's mother explained to Drum. She said they all claimed to only afford R1000 and would pay it on the 28th of May. However, with the help of community members she was able to open a case at Bedfordview SAPS. 'I wasn't sold with the idea of compensation although one of the parents already paid it. Community members volunteered to accompany me to Bedfordview SAPS. After being shown the videos of the incident the station Commander wasted no time and ordered that my daughter be fetched from school so she can give her statement. When we arrived at the school we discovered that that Education department had sent the police to help my daughter open a case after seeing the trending video.' The mother said that although the seven teens were arrested she won't be satisfied until they are detained in a juvenile correctional center. 'So far I'm not happy, I want them to go to jail like any other person that has done wrong. Right now they are in the care of their parents sleeping peacefully at night whilst my daughter is having nightmares and threatening to kill herself. They need to learn a hard lesson, especially because this is not the first bullying incident they've been linked with,' she emphasised. The National Prosecuting Authority's Phindi Mjonondwane explained that Wednesday's court appearance was for the finalisation of the preliminary inquiry. 'Remember that this inquiry seeks to establish their backgrounds, social economic factors, as well as any other circumstances that may have led them to commit that offence. Now that the process has been finalised, the matter has been postponed to the 28th of May.'
