Busy on the banks as anglers celebrate their catches

Dave Hughes with a bream in his net (Image: Contributed) Lukasz Procek provides a fishing update from the Warrington Anglers' Association perspective… THE Warrington Anglers Association headquarters in Parker Street once again opened its doors to the public last Friday. Advertisement For the first time since Covid struck, members (and non-members) were able to come and get answers to their queries, update personal information, get a night permit and have a good old chat with other anglers and committee members. It was a success and as promised it will continue on every last Friday of the month. It was lovely to see, and always nice to hear people's reasons for joining - 'giving their dad something to keep them busy' was a favourite! The next one is set for July 25, 6.30pm-8.30pm. Now, let's see what's been happening on Association rivers, lakes and canals. One of our own bailiffs Keith Starkey set up on his favourite venue - Grey Mist. Advertisement He fished a carp rod with 8mm Robin Red pellet, and feeder rod with sweetcorn on the hook. The carp rod sat quietly while the feeder rod produced two quality tench. The first one was 5lbs 7ozs, with the second just over 5lbs. Keith was very happy with the result. This water is well known for its amazing tench. Well done Keith. Jonny Hughes took his dad Dave out for an evening session at High Legh Fisheries. For Dave it was particularly special as the last time he was out fishing was well over 30 years ago. He enjoyed every moment of it and sitting on the bank brought back all the happy memories from his past. Advertisement Dave caught a pristine looking mirror carp on a small piece of bread. Jonny also caught a beautiful carp on sweetcorn. Both went home very happy. Both anglers praised the venue and amazing work of the WAA dedicated volunteers. I'm sure we will hear from this father-and-son duo again. Keep it up gents! Another father-and-son duo, Barry and Sam Asson, wanted to try somewhere they haven't fished before so they picked Worthington Lake. Advertisement Fishing a new water can often be challenging and sometimes ends with a blank, but that wasn't the case here. With lines barely wet and after only a short wait they caught their first bream. Half an hour later they caught another one. What a great way to spend quality time with family. Well done guys. Barry Asson with a bream (Image: Contributed) Ken Hewitt was flying solo on the Bridgewater Canal at Red Lane, Walton. His partner in crime Dave was taking a short break from fishing as he enjoyed grandad duties. I'm not sure if you are ready for this, but Ken (approximately 50 per cent of our Dynamic Duo) caught 14 fish! Advertisement Eight of them were perch, two of which were around 1.5lb, followed by six good quality roach. All fish were caught on red maggot on a size 18 hook, fished in the middle at around 4ft deep. Great result Ken, Dave will never believe you! Anthony Higham reports from the River Mersey match on Sunday: River level at start was 3.6 metres with very slow current and gin-clear water. The weather was hot and humid. 26 anglers participated. The competition was very close and ended up with joint first place. Winners Harry Billing, peg 71, and Jon Green, peg 64, weights were exactly 10-4-0, both fished pole at 11 and 14 metres respectively. Advertisement Third place Steve Brookes, peg 47, wasn't far behind with 10-1-0 also on the 11-metre pole. Harry's catch was made up of roach, perch and dace and amounted to more than 100 fish in total, all caught on pinkie. Well done Harry! Jimmy Byrne's report from the Disabled and Over 60s match which took place on the Bridgewater Canal at Agden: Only two bream caught during the match, the rest being mainly roach and perch making up the weights. Advertisement 25 members braved very hot weather conditions (well, it was a heat wave after all!) so great work to everyone who took part! Committee member Mike Dench won the match with weight 8-7-0.
