How an AI Star Wars image has backfired on Trump and the White House

ADVERTISEMENT 'That's no moon...' No, Obi-wan, it really isn't. That's the official account of the White House posting an AI-generated image of Donald Trump as a jacked Jedi. Funny the things that pass for normal these days... To mark Star Wars Day, celebrated on May 4th – as a nod to the famous quote 'May the force be with you' - the White House posted on its official X account a computer-generated picture of a muscled-to-the-point-of-overcompensation version of Trump clutching a lightsaber in front of US flags and a pair of bald eagles. It's... Well, it's past the point of parody. The caption read: 'Happy May the 4th to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting so hard to bring Sith Lords, Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, & well known MS-13 Gang Members, back into our Galaxy. You're not the Rebellion - you're the Empire. May the 4th be with you.' Many things to unpack here, but one element stood out even more than those comically protruding veins on Trump's biceps: the red lightsaber. As even the most casual of Star Wars fans can attest, red is the chosen colour of the villainous Sith Lords. Star Wars creator George Lucas once said regarding lightsaber colours: 'Good guys are green and blue, bad guys are red.' Hardly rocket science, but it does mean that the image is an almighty self-own which signals that Trump is the very evil he's seeking to defeat. As one X user pointed out: 'The lack of self awareness and hypocrisy by calling the left 'the empire' while showing trump with a Sith lightsaber.' Some argued that red is the Republican colour and therefore works. However, the Star Wars universe features other lightsaber colours like green, yellow or even purple, none of which have negative connotations or links with the Democrats' colour of choice: blue. The blunder is hardly surprising, considering Trump's cultural illiteracy is documented, as he proved with his frequent Hannibal Lecter references and lack of knowledge regarding the literary and cinematic references he was making during the campaign trail. Once again, and much like his Hannibal references, this botched Star Wars image is a ridiculous attempt to co-opt a popular cinematic touchstone, resulting in confused fearmongering tactics that reveal Trump and his team's genuine lack of cultural savvy. It was also the second time in three days that the White House shared an AI-generated image of Trump that stoked controversy. Trump shared an image on his Truth Social account depicting himself as the pope, after jokingly stating he should succeed the late Pope Francis. Indeed, days before the post, Trump joked he was the 'number one choice' to succeed the late Francis. 'I'd like to be pope. That would be my number one choice,' he told reporters at the White House. ADVERTISEMENT Trump received criticism over the irreverent post. Republicans against Trump reposted the image on X, calling it 'a blatant insult to Catholics and a mockery of their faith', while former Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi wrote on X: 'This is an image that offends believers, insults institutions and shows that the leader of the global right enjoys being a clown. In the meantime, the American economy risks recession and the dollar loses value.' Whether it's an AI Pope or an AI Jedi, it's clear that the Trump administration is showing that traditional White House communication is a thing of the past and that even artificial intelligence is making them look like the bad guys.

White House Shares AI Image Of Trump As Muscular Jedi On Star Wars Day

The White House has shared an AI-generated image of President Donald Trump as a muscular Jedi, in celebration of Star Wars Day, also known as "May, the 4th." The picture, posted on social media on Sunday, featured Trump wielding a lightsaber and flanked by two bald eagles - the national bird of the US. The image was posted shortly after Trump announced plans to reopen and expand the notorious Alcatraz prison, which has been closed for over 60 years. Showing Trump leading the charge against "dangerous prisoners," the post, in Star Wars fashion, read, "Happy May the 4th to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting so hard to bring Sith Lords, Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, and well known MS-13 Gang Members, back into our Galaxy. You're not the Rebellion, you're the Empire. May the 4th be with you." Happy May the 4th to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting so hard to to bring Sith Lords, Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, & well known MS-13 Gang Members, back into our Galaxy. You're not the Rebellion—you're the Empire. May the 4th be with you. — The White House (@WhiteHouse) May 4, 2025 May, the 4th, commonly known as Star Wars Day, celebrates the beloved space epic and its expansive franchise. The holiday originated from fans who cleverly twisted the franchise's iconic phrase, "May the force be with you," into "May the 4th be with you." This catchy phrase made its way into British political culture, where it was used in a 1979 ad celebrating Margaret Thatcher's victory in the general election, held on May 4 that year. In the Star Wars universe, Jedi are peacekeepers who wield blue or green lightsabers and follow a strict code of conduct. They are opposed by the Sith, the dark side users, (antagonists) who wield red lightsabers. The AI image of Trump shows him holding a red lightsaber, a colour typically associated with Sith Lords like Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. Earlier, the White House also shared another AI-generated image of Trump dressed as the pope. This image was shared after Pope Francis's funeral and ahead of the Vatican's conclave to elect a new pontiff.

You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here. I'm a little sad because I very nearly got this one in three. If only I'd swapped the S and the T! STORE was a lucky opener, leaving me with 28 remaining words. LAYUP slashed this down to just two, though Wordle Bot had a stroke or something because when I was checking my score after getting the answer, even though it showed me having 2 words left, it gave me text saying I only had one. Clearly that wasn't the case! I think I thought of PASTY instead of PATSY because when I was coming up with my second guess I thought of NASTY and HASTY and other AST words. Oh well, it was PATSY in the end. I'll take all the blame for that. Today's Wordle Bot I get 1 point for guessing in three and so does the Bot. We each get 0 for tying. This brings our May totals to: Erik: 6 point Wordle Bot: 0 points The word trout comes from the Old English truht which in turn comes from Late Latin tructa. It's likely that tructa was derived from the Greek trōktēs which means 'a gnawer' (from trōgein, or 'to gnaw). This likely relates to the fish's sharp, nibbling teeth. Here's why fans celebrate 'Star Wars Day' worldwide on May 4th

'It didn't begin a long time ago or in a galaxy far far away, but every May 4 it feels like images, memes and promotional deals involving 'Star Wars' have an inescapable gravity. May 4 — or May the 4th, as fans say — has evolved over the years into 'Star Wars Day', an informal holiday celebrating the space epic and its surrounding franchise. What is 'Star Wars' Day? 'Star Wars Day' was created by fans as a sly nod to one of the films' most popular catchphrases, 'May the force be with you.' Get it? Good, now May the 4th be with you too. It's not an official holiday but has become so well-known that even former President Joe Biden marked it last year when 'Star Wars' actor Mark Hamill dropped by the White House a day beforehand. 'I think it's a very clever way for fans to celebrate their passion and love for 'Star Wars' once a year,' said Steve Sansweet, founder and executive chairman of Rancho Obi-Wan, a nonprofit museum in California that has the world's largest collection of 'Star Wars' memorabilia. How did it begin? The phrase 'May the 4th be with you' was used by fans in the years after the first film was released in 1977, and even appeared in a British political ad in 1979 celebrating Margaret Thatcher's victory as prime minister on May 4 that year. For some fans, the official 'Star Wars Day' comes on May 25, the date of the first film's release. The Los Angeles City Council even declared the date to be Star Wars Day in 2007, although the California Legislature voted in 2019 to designate May 4 as 'Star Wars Day'.
