Photo: Radio Pakistan Listen to article Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to eradicating terrorism, saying the country has adopted a multi-pronged strategy to eliminate the threat from its roots. Chairing a review meeting of the counterterrorism steering committee in Islamabad on Thursday, Sharif said, 'The State of Pakistan is committed to eliminating the scourge of terrorism at its roots, and the world acknowledges Pakistan's successful operations against terrorists.' He highlighted that Pakistan's anti-terrorism strategy includes ground operations, legal reforms, public engagement, and countering extremist ideologies. He directed the committee to ensure strong coordination between federal and provincial authorities and strict implementation of recommendations. The prime minister also praised the Pakistan Armed Forces for their role in major operations such as Zarb-e-Azb, Radd-ul-Fasaad, and the recently concluded Marka-e-Haq, which he described as a "historic battle" recognised globally as a major success. 'The entire nation, including the families of officers and personnel who sacrificed their lives for the motherland, takes pride in their bravery and selflessness,' he said. Sharif acknowledged the contributions of provincial governments, the Intelligence Bureau, Ministry of Interior, and Counter-Terrorism Departments—particularly Punjab's CTD—in the fight against terrorism. He said Pakistan is implementing a comprehensive strategy to dismantle anti-social elements including 'Fitna al-Hindustan' and 'Khawarij.' — PTV News (@PTVNewsOfficial) July 31, 2025 Addressing economic security, the prime minister said coordinated efforts by relevant institutions had significantly curbed smuggling, which has positively impacted the national economy. He stressed the importance of peace and security for restoring investor confidence, citing digitisation reforms, improvements in the tax system, and a surge in the Pakistan Stock Exchange as signs of growing economic stability. Sharif also said that the repatriation of Afghan nationals residing illegally in Pakistan was being carried out effectively and in line with international laws. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir, National Security Advisor Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik, ministers, provincial chief secretaries, inspectors general of police, and other officials.

At CPAC, Argentina's Milei explains chainsaw methods, likens them to Musk's DOGE

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — Argentina's President Javier Milei emboldened an enthusiastic crowd of conservatives gathered outside Washington to keep supporting measures to shrink the size of government, explaining his methods are similar to those started by President Donald Trump and his billionaire adviser Elon Musk. Milei is the man behind the chainsaw waved effusively onstage by Musk becoming the most memorable part of the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, this year. In a Saturday speech in Spanish, Milei expressed support for the Trump administration's efforts to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development, saying it is out of line with the president's agenda and claiming it was wasteful. 'The only rational path is to shrink the size of the state as much as possible,' Milei said. 'Reducing the size of the State is in itself an act of justice.' Milei quoted in his speech an influential libertarian intellectual from Pennsylvania, Albert J. Nock, who wrote in his 1935 book 'Our Enemy, the State' about the struggle between state power and social power. 'Our method is similar to that of our dear friend Elon Musk,' Milei said. 'To go office by office, keep in place what is working and get rid of the rest. That's why I gave him a chainsaw.' The Argentine leader used a different chainsaw as a prop during his 2023 campaign to symbolize his proposals to shred the bloated state. The red chainsaw gifted to Musk was engraved with Milei's slogan 'Viva la libertad, carajo,' which is Spanish for 'Long live liberty, damn it.' When Musk first began toying with the idea of forming a taskforce to downsize the federal workforce during an interview with Trump on X last August, they both talked about the Argentine leader. Musk praised his extreme austerity measures that had laid off tens of thousands of public sector workers and cut pensions to reverse spending that caused the country to default on its debts. Milei also attended CPAC last year and met with Trump backstage, exchanging a close hug. Milei was the first foreign leader to meet with Trump after he won the election, but before he took office. He was also invited to the inauguration on Jan. 20. Trump is addressing the conservative gathering later Saturday. ___
