Carlos Mendoza Makes Bold Frankie Montas Decision For Mets' Postseason Push
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Mets have been on quite a losing skid recently, and they desperately need to make a change. With starter Frankie Montas struggling tremendously this season, it quickly became clear that manager Carlos Mendoza couldn't continue to use him every fifth day. Montas has allowed four or more earned runs in four of his eight starts. Still, the Mets are 3-5 in games started by Montas. The righty's strikeout numbers aren't horrible, but his hits allowed are up, and he can't seem to keep the ball in the ballpark. As a result, Mendoza recently made the bold decision that the Mets were going to move the veteran pitcher to the bullpen, per Anthony DiComo of MLB. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 03: Frankie Montas #47 of the New York Mets looks on during the first inning against the San Francisco Giants at Citi Field on August 03, 2025 in the Queens borough of New York City. MoreMontas has thrown out of the bullpen before. He's done so once for the Mets this year already. Before that, he hadn't pitched out of the bullpen since he did so one time with the New York Yankees in 2023. In 2017, Montas was strictly used out of the bullpen by the then-Oakland Athletics. Now, the righty will transition back as the Mets opt to replace him with a better option in the starting rotation. It's clear this is the right move to make. Montas isn't helping the Mets win games as a starter, and they need to find somebody who can. Rather than cut him, New York is giving him an opportunity to transition to the bullpen down the stretch to help the team win games. It could work, but with how poorly he's thrown this year, there's a chance he's shelled out of the bullpen, too. More MLB: Phillies Predicted To Demote Young Pitcher When Jose Alvarado Returns

Juan Soto hits his first homers at Citi Field with the Mets, but D-Backs win 4-2
NEW YORK (AP) — Juan Soto hit his first two home runs at Citi Field as a member of the Mets on Thursday afternoon, but the Arizona Diamondbacks earned a 4-2 win to hand New York a rare home series loss. The Diamondbacks won the final two games of the three-game series — the first time the Mets have lost back-to-back contests at Citi Field since July 27-28, when they fell to the Atlanta Braves. New York, which is 13-3 at Citi Field this season, had its franchise-record streak of 10 straight home series wins snapped. Zac Gallen (2-4) allowed only two hits over six innings. He didn't allow a runner past first base until Soto's opposite field 391-foot blast with one out in the sixth. Soto then hit a 399-foot shot to almost the same area of left-centerfield off Kevin Ginkel in the eighth. Soto entered Thursday batting .241 with four doubles, 10 walks and eight strikeouts in his first 15 home games since signing a 15-year deal worth $765 million last December. He had 12 homers in 35 games at Citi Field as a visiting player. Ginkel wriggled out of a second-and-third jam in the eighth before Shelby Miller recorded his first save with a 1-2-3 ninth. Geraldo Perdomo and Tim Tawa each homered for the Diamondbacks, who also received RBIs from Alek Thomas and Eugenio Suárez. Mets starter Kodai Senga (3-2) gave up one run over four innings. Key moment Ginkel struck out Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo to strand two and preserve a 3-2 lead in the eighth. Key stat The Mets hadn't lost a series at home since Aug. 13-15, when the then-Oakland Athletics took two of three. Up next RHP Merrill Kelly (3-1, 4.41 ERA) starts for the Diamondbacks against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, when Mets RHP Clay Holmes (3-1, 2.64) takes the mound against the St. Louis Cardinals. ___ AP MLB:

Former MLB pitcher dies after being pulled from rubble of nightclub roof collapse: reports
(NEXSTAR) — Former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel is reportedly among the dozens who have died after the roof of an iconic nightclub collapsed early Tuesday morning in the Dominican Republic. As of early Tuesday afternoon, the death toll had climbed to 44, authorities in the capital city of Santo Domingo said. More than 160 others were initially said to have been injured when the roof collapsed during a merengue concert. Among those in attendance were politicians, athletes, and others. Latest: More than 40 dead after nightclub roof collapses in the Dominican Republic Dotel, who spent 15 seasons as a relief pitcher in the MLB, was initially reported to have been injured. However, the Professional Baseball League of the Dominican Republic later posted on X that Dotel had died. Local outlets Diario Libre and Noticias SIN, as well as MLB insider Héctor Gómez, reported that Dotel was pronounced dead after being pulled from the rubble. Officials had earlier rescued Dotel from the debris and transported him to a hospital. The 51-year-old native of the Dominican Republic started his MLB career with the New York Mets in 1999. He then spent nearly five seasons with the Houston Astros before being sent to the then-Oakland Athletics. Before his 2013 retirement, Dotel would also pitch for the New York Yankees, the Kansas City Royals, the Atlanta Braves, the Chicago White Sox, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Colorado Rockies, the Toronto Blue Jays, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Detroit Tigers. He helped the Cardinals to a World Series win in 2011 and recorded 109 saves over his MLB career. Also among the victims was Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the northwestern province of Montecristi and sister of seven-time MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz. She had called President Luis Abinader at 12:49 a.m. saying she was trapped and that the roof had collapsed, First Lady Raquel Abraje told reporters. Officials said Cruz died later at the hospital. Two other former MLB players — Henry Blanco, who played for the Seattle Mariners and the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Esteban Germán, who played for the Royals and Oakland — were reportedly at the nightclub last night but left before the roof collapsed, according to local outlet La Nación. It wasn't immediately clear what caused the roof to collapse. Jet Set issued a statement saying it was cooperating with authorities. 'The loss of human life leaves us in a state of deep pain and dismay,' it said. President Abinader wrote on X that all rescue agencies are 'working tirelessly' to help those affected. 'We deeply regret the tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub. We have been following the incident minute by minute since it occurred,' he wrote. At one hospital where the injured were taken, an official stood outside reading aloud the names of survivors as a crowd gathered around her and yelled out the names of their loved ones. Meanwhile, dozens of people gathered at the National Institute of Forensic Pathology, which projected pictures of the victims so their loved ones could identify them.
