Aldi takes aim at Trader Joe's with new item

By Published: | Updated: Aldi has fired shots at Trader Joe's by releasing Sundae Shoppe-branded tiny cones in select US stores. The nation's fastest growing supermarket's tiny cones went viral after shoppers noticed their striking similarity to Trader Joe's Hold the Cone treats. Shoppers have been able to find these cones in various flavors like chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla with hazelnut pieces. Like the Trader Joe's desserts, Aldi's tiny cones start at $3.99 per box, which comes with 12 ice creams. 'My kids are going to eat these over night, they don't stand a chance,' a Facebook user commented . A few shoppers admitted they too could probably eat the entire Aldi tiny cones box in one sitting. The German grocery store first opened in Iowa in 1976, and now operates over 2,500 stores in the US alone. It's the nation's third-largest grocery chain, and is set to open another 800 US locations by the end of 2028. Trader Joe's has been growing rapidly since its first store opened in 1967, and now has over 560 shopping centers nationwide. Trader Joe's and Aldi are run by Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, respectively, which used to be one company run by a pair of brothers, Food Republic reported. An earlier battle between the grocers was over Japanese food after Aldi released fully-cooked kimbaps to compete with Trader Joe's Korean sushi. The stores have also been going head to head on store expansion in the US. Trader Joe's is planning to open a dozen new stores across 10 states. Aldi shot back by announcing its plans to open more than 225 US stores this year and snapping up Big Lots locations.
