'Won't apologise': After 'Kannada was born out of Tamil' remark, Kamal Haasan stays defiant

BENGALURU: Setting off a row with his remark that "Kannada was born out of Tamil" during a film-promotion event in Chennai, actor-politician Kamal Haasan triggered public outrage and sharp political reactions in Karnataka . In reply to Kannada and culture minister Shivaraj Tangadagi's demand for an immediate apology to the people of Karnataka, Kamal Haasan clarified that his statement was "out of love" and "love will never apologise". Kamal Haasan's remark evoked bitter political reactions, state-wide protests and demonstrations. Tangadagi demanded that Kannada actor Shivaraj Kumar , who was present during Kamal's speech, must condemn Kamal's words and urged Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce to consider enforcing a ban on Kamal Haasan's film. "He must apologise to the people of Karnataka," the minister said. 'Kamal Haasan must apologise to people of Karnataka' Minister Tngadagi said, "Regardless of the personality, we will tolerate none if they try to defame Kannada language, culture, water or boundary. He must apologise to the people of Karnataka. Being a veteran actor, he should not have commented in such a manner. They (Kamal) need Kannada to act and earn and run their propaganda. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like เทรด CFDs ด้วยเทคโนโลยีเทรดสุดล้ำ และ รวดเร็วกว่า IC Markets สมัคร Undo Should they be allowed to speak like this? Previously, singer Sonu Nigam courted controversy and apologised. There is a need to teach a lesson to all these people." Kamal's statement triggered state-wide protests with pro-Kannada outfits staging demonstrations against the actor in Belagavi, Mysuru, Hubballi, and Bengaluru. Karnataka Rakshana Vedike faction of Praveen Shetty lodged a complaint against him at RT Nagar police station, alleging he hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas that triggered unrest between Kannadigas and Tamilians. A senior officer said they forwarded the complaint for legal opinion and they will decide further action based on that. Karnataka BJP chief BY Vijayendra said, "Disrespecting another language in the name of their mother tongue is nothing but uncultured behaviour. Having acted in several Indian languages, Kamal's attempt to glorify Tamil language, especially in the presence of Kannada actor Shivaraj Kumar, reflects his arrogance and foolishness." Responding to political outbursts, Kamal Haasan, in Thiruvananthapuram, recalled the diversity Tamil Nadu has seen over the years in the form of multiple chief ministers from different linguistic backgrounds, including the late J Jayalalithaa, who hailed from Mandya in Karnataka. Claiming his response as an 'explanation' and not an 'answer' in a democratic country, Kamal said, "They (protestors) are confusing the issue. Politicians are not qualified to talk about language, including me. Let's leave all these discussions to historians, archaeologists and language experts. When there was a problem from a TN CM, who hailed from Karnataka, it was Karnataka that gave me support and Kannadigas offered to provide me with a house. So, people will take care of ..." Referring to his 'statement of love' on language in the presence of Shivaraj Kumar, Kamal said, "We (he and Rajkumar family) are a family and so are the languages. If you look at it from a northern point of view, according to them, it is right. If you look at it from Thenkumari (South), what I said was right. There is also a third angle - the scholars, linguists who say both are right - families and languages that came from the North. "

'Apologise Or Face Ban…': Karnataka Culture Minister's Warning To Kamal Haasan Over Kannada Remarks

Curated By : Edited By: Last Updated: May 28, 2025, 15:56 IST In a recent interview at the audio launch of his upcoming film 'Thug Life' in Chennai, actor Kamal Haasan claimed that Tamil gave birth to Kannada. (Image: PTI/Atul Yadav) Karnataka culture minister Shivaraj Tangadagi on Wednesday warned actor Kamal Haasan that his films will be banned in the state if he fails to apologise over his 'Tamil gave birth to Kannada' remarks. Tangadagi asked Kamal Haasan to apologise for his remarks or face a ban on his cinema in Karnataka. This was in response to the actor's recent remark at the audio launch of his upcoming film Thug Life in Chennai, where he claimed that Tamil gave birth to Kannada. 'Kamal Haasan has spoken in an inappropriate manner about Kannadigas. Kannadigas will not tolerate this. He should apologise. If he doesn't, I shall write to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. I am writing today. He should apologise at any cost. There is no question about it. Else, we will ensure that his films will be banned from being screened in the state," Tangadagi said. Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the Kannada language has a long history, and Haasan is unaware of it. 'Kannada language has a very long history…he (Kamal Haasan) doesn't know," Siddaramaiah told reporters. The comments have sparked outrage among several pro-Kannada outfits. These groups staged protests against Haasan in various parts of the state like Belagavi, Mysuru, Hubballi, Bengaluru among others. The activists claimed that Kannada has a history spanning thousands of years. As a demonstration of their anger, they burnt Haasan's posters at Belagavi and a few other places, and raised slogans against him. 'India won't tolerate decades-long terrorism': BJP MP Purandeswari ahead of Europe visit

BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari (Image credits: ANI) NEW DELHI: Ahead of her visit to Europe as part of a multi-party delegation, BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari said that India will no longer tolerate the decades-long terrorism it has faced. "It is high time that the international community also realises the gravity of the situation in our want to take a very strong message across that India would no longer be willing to be ravaged by the decades-long terrorism that we have been facing…,' she said while talking to news agency ANI. Delegation leader BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad also stressed that while India believes in peace and harmony, it will not hesitate to act strongly against terrorism. "I am going to present India's strong side in European countries. Together, we will say only two things effectively- we believe in peace and harmony but if there is a terrorist attack on Indians from across the border, then there will be Operation Sindoor ,' he said. Prasad further added that the delegation represents the entire nation and all of them coming from different parts of the country are speaking the same language against terrorism. The multi-party delegation includes seven groups led by one MP each. The aim of the visit is to counter global misinformation and highlight India's zero-tolerance policy on terrorism.

‘Modi re-emerges: humbled, hurt, and unreformed'

This is apropos a letter to the Editor from this writer carried by the newspaper yesterday. Crucially, India's prime minister Narendra Modi ignored how India had to turn to Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the US to plead for de-escalation. While portraying Pakistan as the one seeking ceasefire, it was India—bloodied and embarrassed—that sought mediation. Modi attempted to mask this diplomatic retreat by saying it was Pakistan that 'contacted our DGMO' and 'begged for peace,' but the timeline and international reports suggested otherwise. From May 5 to May 10, India's Prime Minister vanished from public view. In those tense days of peak escalation, Modi chose silence. His disappearance was not tactical restraint but a tacit admission of miscalculation. When he finally returned to deliver his May 12 speech, it was less a declaration of victory and more an exercise in damage control. His rhetoric turned to nuclear threats and pseudo-moral posturing. He vowed to respond to future attacks on Indian terms, claimed that India would no longer tolerate nuclear blackmail, and blurred the lines between governments and terrorists. He decried Pakistani officers for offering funeral prayers for those killed, presenting it as evidence of state-sponsored terrorism. Yet, the speech revealed more desperation than dominance. He further championed India's 'Made in India' weapons and New Age Warfare capabilities, asserting that the operation validated indigenous defense manufacturing. However, it was evident to the world that India's weaponry failed to protect its skies or maintain strategic superiority. Most ironically, some of those weapons malfunctioned and fell on Indian soil—a bitter embarrassment Modi dared not mention. Perhaps the most overlooked and revolutionary aspect of this confrontation was Pakistan's demonstration of indigenously developed soft warfare capabilities. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Foreign Secretary Misri briefs parliamentary delegations ahead of their visits abroad

NEW DELHI: As multi-party delegations leave for foreign capitals to convey India's strong stand against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, their members were briefed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on the neighbouring country's role in terror strikes and India's commitment to punish the perpetrators as well as their masterminds. Members, MPs and former parliamentarians, of three of the seven such delegations were briefed, and they are expected to meet government functionaries, including ministers, legislators, think tanks and media during their visits to different parts of the world. While India is committed to peace, it will not tolerate any terror attacks on its soil and will hit back as part of its "new normal", Misri told them, according to sources. In a reference to Pakistan's offer of an independent probe into the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, Misri noted its earlier behaviour of ignoring evidence and doing little when India presented it with facts following other terror attacks, including 26/11 in Mumbai and in Pathankot in 2026, the sources said. An MP quoted Misri as saying that trusting Pakistan is like trusting a "chor" (thief) to investigate the crime he has committed. JD(U) leader Sanjay Jha, who is leading a delegation to Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia, told reporters after the meeting, "Our message to world leaders will be that India has decided 'enough is enough' and that Pakistan has acted like a thief asked to probe his own crime whenever India has in the past trusted its words on acting against terrorism."
