Alleged drunk driver crashes into Branchburg home
BRANCHBURG – A Somerville man has been charged with driving while intoxicated and other offenses after he crashed a pickup into a home at the corner of South Branch Road and Hillcrest Drive on the morning of Aug. 4.
Eric Wilson has also been charged with the motor vehicle violations of being an unlicensed driver, failure to install an interlock device, driving while suspended, failure to maintain lane, refusal to submit to a breath test, reckless driving, driving a vehicle with unsafe tires and driving on the revoked list after license was suspended for a drunk driving offense, police said.
When township police arrived at the scene at about 9:30 a.m. Monday, officers saw a white pickup truck inside the first floor of the home.
Wilson was able to get himself out of the pickup, police said, but he had sustained a laceration to the head.
Wilson refused medical treatment after being assessed by the Branchburg Rescue Squad, according to police.
One person was at home on the second floor of the home at the time of the crash and was safely escorted out of the house by police.
While speaking with him, officers observed that Wilson may have been under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, police said.
Police tried to conduct field sobriety tests on Wilson, but he allegedly refused to cooperate, police said.
Wilson was then arrested and taken to police headquarters where he allegedly refused to give a breath sample.
A check of Wilson's driving record revealed that his license was suspended for previous DWI convictions.
The police department received a Superior Court warrant to collect blood and urine to determine alcohol and/or drug content, police said.
Wilson was taken to the Somerset County Jail after being medically cleared.
Wilson has twice been sentenced to state prison for drug offenses, in Somerset County in 1998 and in Union County in 2001. He also faced two DWI charges in Hillsborough in 2006 and 2010. After the 2010 conviction, his license was suspended for 10 Readington, his license was suspended for eight years in May on a charge of refusing to take a breath test. He was also ordered to drive with an interlock device for two years.
