‘Gotta catch ‘em all': Winnipeg girl to represent Manitoba at World Pokémon Championship
12-year-old Era Roulette is pictured at a Pokémon tournament. She is set to compete at the world championship in August. Uploaded July 4, 2025. (Submitted: Cody Roulette) From a comic book store in Winnipeg to the world stage, a 12-year-old girl is taking her passion for Pokémon to the next level. Era Roulette is competing to be the very best – the best there ever was. At least when it comes to Pokémon. Her love of the trading card game started a few years back when her dad bought her a Pokémon gift set. 'Ever since, she's been very competitive. She went from, 'Oh, I want to try this,' to, 'Oh, I want to try the best version of this,' to, 'I want to be the best at this,'' Era's dad, Cody Roulette, told CTV News. Nearly every Thursday, Era would sharpen her skills at Pokémon tournaments hosted at Galaxy Comics on Henderson. But soon, she and her dad started competing at larger tournaments across Canada and the U.S. Now Era has become one of the best players in North America. Later this summer she'll travel across the land to 'catch 'em all' at the 2025 Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim, Calif. 'To be honest, not a lot of people get a chance to go to these. She's only the second person from Manitoba to ever make it,' Cody said. In fact, the only other Manitoban to have gone to Worlds is a regular at Galaxy Comics tournaments – Glen Henderson. He competed in the global ring back in 2018. 'It's a very prestigious celebration of just playing well and best of the best, showing up to see who can compete,' he said. In Era's division, only the top 75 players in North America get an invite to the competition. Era ranks 66. He said Era will be the second Manitoban to compete and the first girl to represent Manitoba at the competition. 'I was really impressed. I was really proud,' Henderson said. 'It's a huge commitment and a huge accomplishment to make and I figured the community needs to rally around and support as much as possible. It's a huge accomplishment and should be celebrated.' The community has rallied. In order to send Era to worlds, more than $900 has been raised through a GoFundMe so far to cover the cost of flights, hotels and food. 'It's the most welcoming community you can expect,' Cody said. 'It's because we all are just playing a game we enjoy, right?' He's looking forward to seeing his daughter represent Manitoba on the world stage. 'I'm living vicariously through my daughter, because I think all of us enjoyed something as a kid and wanted to take it to the next level,' Cody said.

You Only Have Until July 7 to Grab Some Rare First Chapter Lorcana Cards
The folks over at Ravensburger have been doing a lot of good work for fans of its wildly successful trading card game (TCG), Lorcana. The Reign of Jafar set gave us some amazing new cards, and the new Fabled set is looking to bring back some fan favorites as the game moves into a new phase, one that almost all TCGs go through, by rotating sets out of standard play. Because the first four sets will no longer be legal in competition play, the Fabled set will reprint some cards from those first four to allow them to be used in competitions. And as a bonus, you don't have to use the reprinted art card, but can use any card with the same name. To that end, Ravensburger has announced a lottery to allow you to purchase some of the original First Chapter and Floodborn booster packs, and not just English ones but Japanese and Chinese variants, too. Not all of the ones you buy are available to use in competition play, but all of them will look awesome in your collection. And the ones that do end up with reprints in the Fabled set can be used in competition play to add a flair of uniqueness. James Bricknell/CNET There are a couple of caveats to the lottery. Firstly, you must have an EQL account to participate in the lottery. Ravensburger uses the EQL platform to ensure that no resellers or bots can enter the lottery in bulk and that it's as fair as possible. If you've ever used the platform with Ravensburger, you'll also have a little leg up, as it prioritizes people who have entered but not won other lotteries or contests. It's easy to sign up on the Ravensburger website, so you should be able to get in the lottery ahead of the stop time. The lottery is open now, but closes on Monday, July 7, at 9 p.m. PST. Once the lottery closes, winners should be informed and offered the chance to buy the select packs from July 11 onward. Several different types of boxes are available, including English, Chinese and Japanese variants, though not all of them are available everywhere. US buyers, for example, have five chances to enter for assorted language boxes, but EU buyers have an additional chance to buy German and French variants, too. Buyers in the US can try for these sets: The First Chapter -- Japanese -- 6 cards per booster pack -- 16 boosters per box -- $45.99 (2-box max) Rise of the Floodborn -- Japanese -- 6 cards per booster pack -- 16 boosters per box -- $45.99 (2-box max) The First Chapter -- Chinese -- 12 cards per booster -- 10 boosters per box -- $49.99 (2-box max) Rise of the Floodborn -- Chinese -- 12 cards per booster -- 10 boosters per box -- $49.99 (2-box max) The First Chapter -- English -- 12 cards per booster pack -- 24 boosters per box -- $143.99 (1-box max) James Bricknell/CNET You can put your name in once for each of those five boxes, and you don't have to buy them all if you win. You will just have the option to. It's important to note that the English boxes are limited to just one per winner, while the other language variants give you the option for two. The Japanese/Chinese variants do have fewer cards per box, so it makes sense to be able to get two boxes. Lorcana is not only one of my favorite games for two players, but one of the best games to give as a gift to a loved one. It takes everything fun about Magic: The Gathering and makes it accessible to everyone while giving you a Disney flair that's hard to beat. This lottery is a chance to give someone you love a very special gift, or if you're the Lorcana player in the family, you can treat yourself to something awesome.

Legendary's Live-Action MAGIC: THE GATRHERING Movie Will Be Written By Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald — GeekTyrant
It looks like the long-gestating live-action Magic: The Gathering project is finally starting to take shape. According to Deadline, screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have closed a deal to write the feature film adaptation for Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment. While representatives for both companies declined to comment, the attachment of Gardner and Fitzgerald marks a big development in Legendary and Hasbro's plan to kick off a Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe. The film was first announced in February as the starting point for a broader film and TV franchise built around the massively popular card game. As of April, BlackBerry filmmaker Matt Johnson was reportedly the top choice to direct the project, though it's unclear if a deal has officially gone through. Regardless, this latest update signals forward momentum on a project that fans have been waiting years to see materialize. First released in 1993, Magic: The Gathering has evolved into a full-blown cultural phenomenon. 'Marking Hasbro's first $1 billion brand, Magic: The Gathering is recognized as the world's first trading card game, having connected with more than 50 million fans worldwide since 1993.' Players assume the role of powerful planeswalkers who wield spells, summon creatures, and battle across fantasy worlds in an ever-expanding multiverse. That multiverse has grown far beyond the tabletop, with Magic embracing serialized storytelling through card sets, novels, and crossovers with iconic franchises like Dungeons & Dragons and The Lord of the Rings . The built-in lore makes the IP a prime candidate for an epic fantasy franchise, and one that could stand apart from the usual genre fare if handled right. Gardner and Fitzgerald previously teamed up with Hasbro on a now-shelved Power Rangers movie that had Jonathan Entwistle attached to direct. They also worked on The Trench , an abandoned Aquaman spinoff developed for Warner Bros. and DC with James Wan and Peter Safran, and were behind The Patient , a psychological thriller produced with Maximum Effort, Vertigo Entertainment, and 20th Century Studios. The gears are finally turning on this project and longtime Magic fans will be watching closely to see if this adaptation can cast the right spell. Source: Deadline
